i dont think its that great of a pick up.

Clement is inconsistant, velocity is down, and wild. he is good one game, and bad the next. i also dont think that he is worth 8m a year.

Shilling

Wells

Clement

Arroyo

Wakefield

Johnson

Mussina

Pavano

Wright

Brown

i guess you up-graded a bit, but still no match for the yankees, i would rate that prob 8th in baseball, and Gammons rated the Yankees 2nd

Clement wont be your opening day starter, Wells will.

Clement has a good arm but no make-up what so ever. He wasnt good is SD, FL, or CHI. Also, i dont think he will do any good in Fenway, he couldnt throw inside most of the year and when he did, they hung. $25m for a guy with a 3.7 ERA? Thats a desperet move by Theo.

I like Clement. He's been improving steadily since he left the Marlins, and should be primed for a breakout year. He won't put up Schilling numbers, but he'll probably somewhere around 3.75-4 ERA, 15-ish wins, especially with the run support he'll probably get.

so do we still go after another pitcher during this offseason like a Perez or Burnett or do we wait and keep this rotation & then in the season go after a Sheets or some other highly sought after guy???

...in other words we arent truly gonna go and keep Hanley Ramirez for the next 4 years, ar we???

that's not breaking out. that's doing exactly what he's been doing.

I think is a good signing. Sure Theo may have overpaid, but we needed the starter. Five of Clement's no decisions and loses in 2004, he only gave up 1 ER in each game, a win in those starts gives him 14 wins. The Sox bats will be there in 2005. I think this is better than giving up Arroyo in a trade for Burnett. Now sign Tek!!!!

I think that the money that Clement got was expected, the way the market for pitchers are going this year, that is about what Clement should get compared with other pitchers.

Haha, clement, lol. Good luck with him, you'll need it.

Dude, if either Pavano or Clement is going to get rocked, it will be Pavano.

One reason is Clement strikes out more guys than innings, and Pavano has pathetic K rates.

BSR is right. Clement had a 1.60 groundball to flyball ratio, which is better than Pavano's 1.43. Also, Clement had a 9.45 K/9 as opposed to Pavano's 5.63. On top of that, batters only hit .229 off Clement against the .253 off Pavano.

Granted, Clement does walk more people, but he will also get the benefit of having more double plays behind him to back him up.

Let's also look at things this way: Matt Clement had one of the worst infield defenses in baseball behind him while Pavano had one of the best defensive middle infields of our generation. Also, Clement pitched in a small ballpark in front of packed houses in the country's #3 market while Pavano pitched in one of baseball's best pitchers' parks with 10,000 people a night to watch.

For a right-handed pitcher, Fenway is a bit easier to pitch in than Wrigley. For a right-handed pitcher, Yankee Stadium is much more difficult than Pro Player. Both have to make the NL to AL switch, so that's a wash.

Less length, less money, less commitment. I like this move a lot.

Like I said before, I believe Clement for $8 mil is better than Lowe at $8 mil. Clement in my mind is a replacement for Lowe, not Pedro.

It would be awfully nice to get a nice pitcher to slot in to the #2 spot...

Right now:

Schilling

Clement

Wells

Wakefield

Arroyo

Decent. I'd feel more confident with everyone shifting down 1:

Schilling

(insert # 2 guy here)

Clement

Wells

Wakefield

With ( in theory) Arroyo being in a package for that #2 man.

I like the ERA, and the innings would be almost the same except Wells missed, I think, 3 starts early last year.....

>Wells and Clement were a combined 21-21 this year with a 3.70 ERA in 376 innings for the Padres and Cubs.

>Martinez and Lowe were 30-21 with a 4.59 ERA in 399 innings for the Red Sox.

good signing but Sox must have another EXCELLENT pitcher - not another good pitcher. Opposing teams will load up against Curt in each series as he goes through the season. A three game series against Tampa, followed by a three game series in Baltimore, and then a four game series in New York - Curt will be the do or die guy in each series and they will all be gunning for him. It will be a long season for Mr. Schilling - can clement, Wells, Wakefield and Arroyo support a 98 game win season ?

I'm not really worried about being overmatched by other team's pitching. Remember we have a killer offense. I can recall only about 3-4 times all season last year that the Red Sox were overmatched by a pitcher (and Kazmir may have done it twice and I think Ted Lilly and Johan Santana were the other times)..

Point is, we don't really need co Aces (we didn't in '03) to make the playoffs. Consistent pitching is just as important if you ask me. Of course, the playoffs are completely different...
