Dec. 13 - Now that Pedro Martinez is moving closer to leaving Boston for the Mets and Carl Pavano is about to sign with the Yankees, the Red Sox have jumped back hard into the Clement sweepstakes, reports Insider's Jerry Crasnick. The level of interest in Clement could lift him out of the three-year, $21 million to $22.5 million realm inhabited by Jaret Wright, Jon Lieber and Kris Benson and bring him a three-year deal in the range of $8 million to $9 million annually.

Cleveland and Toronto have made no secret of their interest in Clement, although the Guardians reportedly dropped out once his price started to rise, and the Dodgers continue to be interested as they also pursue Oakland's Tim Hudson in a trade. Clement reportedly was close to a deal with Anaheim over the weekend, but the longer he waits to sign, the more his price seeems to be increasing.

Do you really think they're getting rentereia still? I think it's a toss-up right now. The Cards want him back really badly.

I think Renteria stays in St. Louie, Pedro to Mets, Manny to Mets probably, Pavano to Yanks, and Randy Johnson said to the Diamondbacks I don't care what ya do get me to New York, Hudson to Dodgers more probably, and A.J. Burnett will be a Brave, or a barganing chip for the Yanks. It makes the ALCS dibacle forgetable. Man, its great to be a Yankee fan again.

Oh yea... Wright to the Yanks.

What are the BoSox's doing there letting everyone slip through their fingers.

The offseason's always a great time to be a Yankee fan. It's the postseason you have to worry about. :harhar:

touche rooter, but here's the thing this year stung, but its nothing compared to what the Red Sox had to go through. Just remember one thing the curse is over so now they are just a regular baseball team. I was wondering if all the Sox fans will become closet Cubs fans because I just can't see Red Sox fans bitching about not winning the big game, lol

5 year grace period. i am not allowed to bitch about not winning it all for 5 years. after that all hell breaks loose if we don't win the 6th year.

did yankee fans bitch in 2001? lol..jus playin guys.

anyway, yankeesrule, rj wont be going ANYWHERE. why would the d-backs sign glaus and russ ortiz for big bucks and then decide to trade RJ? they are trying to make a run for the WS with randy one last year.

Well schiilingouteks its already been reported that the D-Backs called the Yanks today and asked if they had any more options available. If RJ told his agents he wants out he's gonna get out of Arizona. He has a no-trade clause and the only team he would waive it for would be New York. I guess he wants to pitch for Torre. He wants a chance to win one more time.

it may not be until after the season starts, but I think it will happen. Steinbrenner wants it so does RJ. Arizona screwed themselves when they signed those two players with money that they said they didn't have. I think they thought RJ would stay if they got those two. But, unfortunantly for them he was like whoa you got money so you don't need all that money from the Yanks, so make a deal.

Why is everyone on the Yankees so intent on getting RJ. You lose Vazquez, and get a 41 year old pitcher, who the year before last was dealing with some serious health issues. You talk of it as if you are getting Johan or RJ 5 years ago. Plus there are teams out there with much better offers, and what makes you think that RJ won't start liking them when it seems Arizona won't budge. The Yankees need to make some smart pitching move instead of grabbing the hottest thing. Keeping Vazquez is the smarter move, since he proved he can compete the first half of the season and if much much younger than the old man. But hey if the Yankees want him then more power to them, just don't feel bad if he winds up in St.Louis and the Yankees passed over the other talent out there. RJ is not George Steinbrenner and in the end he will do what Arizona wants, or he will grow a year older on a s***** team.

It's now up to Clement where he goes. From today's Globe:

The Red Sox are one of seven teams that have an offer on the table to righthander Matt Clement, who came up in the Padres' system with Theo Epstein and remains one of the most attractive pitching options left on the market despite a career record under .500.

The Blue Jays, Angels, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, White Sox, and Guardians are the other teams in the bidding for Clement, who is expected to command an offer of at least three years, at an average annual value of $8 million, if not more.

I would hate to see the Sox get in a bidding war for Clement, yet we do need a solid starter.

I read somewhere (I think it was the Boston Globe) that Anaheim was prepared to go to 3 years, 27 million ($9 mil per) but Boston was not likely to increase their offer.

Matt Clement is 69-75 in his career with a 4.34 ERA. Last year he was 9-13 but with a 3.68 ERA, suffered from lack of run support. The past 3 years, Clement has been decent. About 9 K's per 9 IP, and over 2 K's per BB. He also gives up more grounders than flyballs, which is a good thing coming to Fenway.

Compare that to Derek Lowe (who is also seeking $8 mil per), who averaged about 5 K's/9, about 1.5 K's per BB, but much better groundball percentage.

Overall, I'd say Clement would be an upgrade over Lowe...

Clement's record is pretty low, because 1) He was on some terrible Marlins teams, without any support, and 2) because it's only been recently that he's started to fulfill his potential. I'm willing to bet that he can keep up the pace once he leaves the Cubs.

If he came I think he'd be our number 3. I'd say he's better than Wake and Arroyo and possibly Wells. He was only low on the Cubs rotation because the Cubs have an awesome rotation.

I like the 9K's per 9 innings from Clement but the 3.68 ERA bothers me as he moves from the National to the American League. I don't think he's worth 9 mill a year. On the other hand I also don't see the logic in trading a healthy Bronson for Burnett who seems to be hurt every year.
