Renteria is head and shoulders above Polanco, both in the field and offensively. While Polanco is solid, I think anyone would much rather have Rent.

renteria is NOT better at EIGHT million MORE per season. i'll tell you that much.

save the money. guess who's a free agent in 06? BEN SHEETS, i think zen pointed that out. how long do you guys think schilling is going to be around for, how about wells. what if arroyo stays around where he is, we'll need a #2 by then. ben sheets will be our man.

you gotta build a team that will allow you to build in the future also, spending all your assets and money on today will turn you into the yankees. a team that has a bunch of top notch players with no future.

I just made this point on baseball.com. If you check over there, you'll recognize it. If not, enjoy. It was made in regards to questions about Polanco's ability to play SS.

Due to the Phillies having Jimmy Rollins at SS, Polanco hasn't played there since 2002 with St. Louis, but he is very capable.

1998- 116 innings, .952 FP, 5.51 RF, .865 ZR

1999- 58 innings, .931 FP, 4.14 RF, .769 ZR

2000- 151 innings, 1.000 FP, 4.99 RF, .914 ZR

2001- 281 innings, 1.000 FP, 5.09 RF, .936 ZR

2002- 90 innings, 1.000 FP, 4.27 RF, .958 ZR

Oh yes, he's very capable of playing an excellent shortstop. Hell, he's better than Renteria at short.

Now, kick in the superior ability to get on base and the exact same power numbers for 1/4-1/5 of the cost for fewer years and you have yourself a deal.

Placido Polanco should've been Theo's top choice at SS all offseason.

Basically, the guy hasn't made an error at shortstop all millenium.

are you for real? if you chose polanco over renteria you must be high beyond belief!

It's looking more and more like Renteria will re-sign with the Cardinals. Theo will reportedly meet with OC's agent tonight. A reported trade for Julio Lugo also fell through.

i'm hoping we trade dougie M to the mets for kaz matsui. we'll have a stopgap until hanley is ready and we could move kaz to 2nd where he belongs when hanley comes up.

does anyone know kaz' salary. i'm too lazy to find out.

I think he's owed $13 or $15 million bucks over the next two years. It's either $6 million then $7 or $7 then $8. I can't remember which.

I think we should get Lugo, but that assult case scares me a little. Then again, people deserve second chances, and Lugo is a good ball player. So let's take a shot at him

No pun intended?

I think that you're confusing him with Richard Hidalgo.

OOOOOOF!

the only way i see this happening is because it's ONLY for 2 years whereas signing someone like rent or OC will have to be at least for 4 years.

I'm not one for insulting people, so I'm staying clear of THAT portion of this thread.

HOWEVER:

I think the idea of signing Renteria is good, I think the cost is high though.

I don't think Hanley should be traded, instead move Edgar to second once he's ready. Renteria is a gold glove shortstop and a decent bat.

I'd say sign him, but at $10 mil I'm not so sure.

I understand a lot of people are high on Ramirez, but in Sarasoxfan's defense, there are no guarantees in baseball. So many can't-miss prospects have not panned out as expected.

What's wrong with a little insurance policy?

we allready have insurance in the name of dustin perdrodia (sp) lol. no seriously. 10 mill dollars per year for renteria is absolutely ludacris. eve 8 mill per is.

I agreed that $10 mill is too much.

I don't think he's worth $10 mil per season... but he'd be a heck of a lot better than Barry Larkin, Royce Clayton, or really any of the other options besides....

Orlando Cabrera.

I'd rather see the Sox guarantee 4 years of Orlando at more like $7-$8 million than Renteria at $10.

We know Orlando can perform in the playoffs, can perform in Boston, plays excellent defense, etc.

When Hanley makes it to the bigs, Orlando can shift to second base.

I guess it comes down to don't fix what isn't broken. OC did well this year, and we can get him for less, but i think Renteria will be a good fit in Boston.
