NEW YORK (AP) - Curt Schilling needs surgery on his injured right ankle, but the Red Sox hope he will still be able to pitch Game 5 of the AL championship series Sunday. Schilling lasted just three innings and 58 pitches in Boston's 10-7 loss to the New York Yankees in Tuesday night's opener, allowing six runs, his poorest playoff performance since 1993.

The Red Sox said the sheath that covers a tendon in Schilling's ankle is torn.

"The tendon is snapping over the bone," Red Sox physician Dr. Bill Morgan said Wednesday.

Schilling will undergo surgery after the postseason and will need about three months to recover. If the injury occurred during the season, Morgan said Schilling would have been placed on the disabled list.

Schilling pitched with a brace Tuesday and had a shot of painkiller in the ankle. Still, he had trouble pushing off the rubber with his right leg.

The Red Sox hope a better brace will help, but if not, Schilling's season will be over.

how effective do you think he will be in game 5 [if he pitches]?!?!

Really, if he is risking further aggravating it, I don't think he should pitch. Sure, this sucks, but what can you do. Bodies are fragile. Hopefully Pedro can carry us..... :(

I agree. If there's even a chance he could get hurt even more, shut him down. If he won't be able to pitch at least as well as he did in Anaheim, then shut him down as well.

First off a heartfelt thank you for getting Schilling injured goes to Terry Francona. It sure was worth keeping him in longer in game one of the ALDS wasn't it dumbass?

Schilling should not pitch game 5, plain and simple. I don't give a damn what is said there is no way he'll be healthy enough. Maybe game six, and hopefully games seven. We have Lowe, let's use him. I know you all don't want to, but last night should be enough to prove a 100% Lowe is probably more effective than a 70% Schilling. We've got Wake too and we should use him. Hopefully Schilling can make it through this and finish the playoffs, but if not we'll just have to adjust.

(Heck maybe even throw McCarty into the rotation.......

It's not just Tito who gets the blame here. Didn't the doctors know this could happen if they numbed his ankle? and If so, who in the Red Sox agreed to take that chance?

I think this vaults Lowe back in the rotation, and what a perfect time. If he ever wants a big contract next year, his opportunity is here. Money motivates and I really think he'll pitch well.

tito gets all the blame and then some. He uses his starters way too long, and he is a spinelss turd.

If schilling was in a body cast bledding and vomiting but told francona he could pitch, terry would say Oh okay, you dont look so good but give it a whirl and we;'ll see how it goes, let me know when I can take you out.

Pedro has pitched way too many innings this year, and schilling has as well. he aint no spring chicken..These guys are like sprost cars and need handling..Jimy Williams was no prize, but he hooked these guys early and often.

terrible terrible scapegoat here. francona is NOT at fault. schilling hurt his ankle against the angels. he just made it a bit worse by playing game 1. he should not have started that game, PERIOD.

like i have said before, a tendon injury is not something that heals in a couple games. it's something that takes months along with surgery. he's done for the season, if i see him pitch again this season i'm going to be ripped.

doesnt the manager decide who pitches. If the guy was hurt and terry didnt know. Thats not very impressive. If terry was watching the game he could see the guy was laboring...it occured to him there was a problem when the score was 6-0.

Why do poeple defend this wimp.

Sure the players play the game, svhilling threw the pitches and the ynakees hit the ball.

But time and time again our so-called manager has bungled the only task he has...pitching...leaving guys in too long, pulling guys too early, bringinig in the wrong reliever, letting games get out of hand and sticking with guys because he's nice as opposed to smart.

One of the reasons we are on the short end of the stick is becasue we brandish the most bizarre sense of loyality to the wrong people.

Fire his ass and bring in a winner.

Today.

Schilling suffered the injury in his final regular season outing against the Yankees, NOT in Game 1 against the Angels. Therefore, he was pitching with the injury against the Angels, which means there was no doubt that he should of started Game 1.

i should have stated it more clearly. schilling made his ankle MUCH worse on that play against garret anderson. before that it was probably slightly inflammed, after that was probably when it really got bad.

if schilling was hurt he shouldn't have played. he tried to "tough" it out. sometimes you just gotta learn to not be that macho man and sit yourself for the sake of the team.

it's not schillings fault, nor is it francona's.

"We had some issues in the Anaheim game. I got injected in third inning in Anaheim. And it flared up again later in that game. As far as tweaking it on the play, that last play where I threw the ball away against Anaheim, it popped a couple of different times because I took a couple of different wrong steps, but that wasn't the trigger." -Curt Schilling on WEEI this morning

Sorry I'm behind on everything... but I like to throw in my $.02

It's official: Derek Lowe is the game 5 starter (if there is one).

And let's face it. I'd rather have a healthy Derek Lowe than a hurt Schilling. The ankle is definately hurting his performance. The doctors say he's not going to make it worse by playing (now), but it's pretty bad.

Yes, Lowe has struggled this season and got beat twice by the MFY in last year's ALCS... but pitching Schill while he's hurt is not good for this team.

Apparently Reebok gave him a specially designed high top shoe that he will try to throw with in a bullpen session. It looks like Tito is not giving up on having Schilling come back for at least one game.
