What's our rotation going to be like in the...you know. October thing?

We have seven starters (might as well mention all of them, they are on our roster)

Pedro Martinez

Curt Schilling

Bronson Arroyo

Derek Lowe

Tim Wakefield

Pedro Astacio

Byung-Hyun Kim

Who's # 1? Who's 3? What's going on? DISCUSS!

Schill is one, duh, hes been the most consistent pitcher for us this season. Pedro is 2, because hes our 2nd best pitcher, duh, and he is a CY YOUNG WINNER, any Cy Young winner should be first, unless theres another great pitcher. 3 is where it really gets tough. Bronson or Lowe, this one will be decided on solely on the last few weeks of the season. I think that our 5th starter will depend on how Kim pitches. If he pitches like s***, i expect Wake to get it. If he really pitches well, and pitches like he did in Arizona, he should be the 5th starter

you have the "utmost" confidence which means that you are right and that Petey should start. I dont know if you watched Shillings last starts and Pedros last starts. But i think your grandma is calling you for dinner, time to get off the computer!

i have watched their past starts. schilling has pitched considerable better. when was the last time that the ace didn't pitch the first game? that's just the way it is, seniority. petey has stated that he didn't care who started first and that schilling has been pitching great. if they start schilling then so be it. i'de just rather see the ball in # 45's hands in all game 1's.

your little number three is doing AMAZING tonight. You knoe what maybe we should put Lowe at 2 they way hes looking.

1.Curt

2.Pedro

3.Lowe

4.Arroyo

5.Wakefield

I would put Lowe ahead of Arroyo, probably based on playoff experience, as Lowe really shined in the divisional series against Oakland. I still think Wakefield can do really well against the Yankees, but my opinion may change depending on how he does on Saturday, but I think you have to use him a lot in middle relief against them in the playoffs.

I read an article which made a good point in saying Arroyo should be #2, given that his away record is much better than his home.

I've also heard another theory claiming we should start Wake/Lowe #1, so we give the opposing team their automatic win first.

The way I see it, Pedro must stake his claim as number 1 starter by shutting down the MFY Friday night, otherwise, Schilling is number 1. I like the idea of Arroyo as number 2 on the road. The number 4 starter is a code red situation.

Lowe can go in the bullpen

I agree on that. Schill is more capable on short rest than Pedro, hence the number 1 spot and potential 4 and 7 starts. Pedro would go 2 and 6. Bronson would go 3. Wake would go 5.

This is the smartest thing I've seen in this thread (no offense to anyone else, I just personally thing this is a GREAT idea).

In a 5 game series, only the #1 pitcher starts twice. For the #2 pitcher to come back in game 5, it would be on 3 days rest. Under the logic that Schilling would bounce back better on short rest, you'd imagine you'd want Schill as #2.

However, Assuming the Red Sox make it to the second week of October with fewer wins than the Yankees and more wins than Oakland/Anaheim/Texas, the first 2 and last game of such a series would be played on the ROAD. This is my rotation:

1. Schilling

2. Arroyo

3. Martinez

4. Wakefield

Anyone who reads my posts knows I'm fascinated with statistics. Because Arroyo has so much more success on the road than at home. As a result, he squeezes into #2.

Now on to the question of where to put Schilling and Martinez. Look at Pedro's home/road splits:

Home: 9-2, 3.01 ERA

Road: 7-5, 4.40 ERA.

How about Schilling's splits?

Home: 11-1, 3.52 ERA

Road: 9-5, 3.00 ERA

So one would decipher from these stats that Schilling's slightly better on the road, and Pedro's MUCH better at home. So Schilling (who's been much more consistant than Pedro this year ANYway) gets the nod for the first game.

And let's face it: If I had to pick 1 pitcher to start twice in a series... it would be Schilling.

OK, so why Wake at #4? Well.... Why not? He's no worse than Lowe, and his performance in last year's ALCS was the only reason the series even went 7 games.

Now, that's the rotation I'd pick. They say Francona's obsessed with statistics... Yet he ignores them sometimes (Alan Embree is NOT a lefty specialist). Terry's been trying all year NOT to start Pedro/Schilling back to back... It would make a HUGE statement (and be controversial) NOT to start Pedro in game 1, and his feelings might be hurt. Is Francona capable of making a controversial decision?

Doubt it. Which is why I present my predicted rotation:

1. Martinez

2. Schilling

3. Lowe

4. Arroyo

Why Lowe? Because he too might be pissed off to be left off the rotation.

Why Arroyo? Because Wakefield has always been outspoken about his team-first attitude. For this, he gets banished to the 'pen.

Seriously, who cares if Lowe is pissed off about being left off of the rotation? The way he's been pitching, he's gone after this season.

I really wouldn't care if he left with bad feelings toward boston.

Schilling

Pedro

Lowe

Arroyo

There's no doubt number 38 is number 1.

Wake must go to the bullpen. Dropping Pedro down to number 3 to let Arroyo pitch on the road is a clever idea, but Pedro needs to pitch Game 2. Here's hoping the Sox can wrap the series up in three or four games to allow Schilling to pitch game 1 of the ALCS.

Yeszir...

If you read my post a little more closely, you'll see that if I'm picking the rotation, Lowe doesn't sniff the top 5. I just think Francona is incapable of making a move he thinks might piss off his players.... so the rotation with Lowe in it was my PREDICTION.

My SUGGESTION had Arroyo as # 2 and Lowe riding pine.

For the ALDS this is what I'd do:

1) Pedro Martinez (Despite the fact Schilling has had a stronger season, I'd rather Pedro pitch first.)

2) Derek Lowe (Lowe got it done last year in the ALDS and even with the ugly starts he's had, there are times he can be very good. Assuming Pedro wins game one, we have not much to lose by throwing Lowe in at number two.)

3) Curt Schilling (Triple purpose. One not a bad guy to have if going for a sweep. Two, if we come out of game tie with a series tie, I'd rather Schilling on the hill because we'd most likely get a win. Three, God forbid we be down two games, I'd like to have Schilling to rely on to try and start another amazing comeback.)

4) Bronson Arroyo (After Schilling he has been the most reliable guy in the rotation. Putting him at number four is not a bad move. First he is a guy who could get that third win if the situation calls. Second, I'd rather have him than Lowe or Wake if we needed to tie the series in game four. Plus, if he falters we can throw Wake in for long relief.)

5) Tricky, but I'd start Pedro. Hopefully he would be able to find his playoff magic and the Sox could take the game. In this scenario, Schilling would start game one of the ALCS if we won. Also, if Pedro falters we could use Schilling in relief.

Hopefully the ALDS is done in four so we can save our aces for the next round (granted we're the winners), but if not I believe that one of our two aces can get it done in game 5.

DISCLAIMER: Performance predictions based on Francona not being a moron and trying to save the 'pen.

This is coming down to "what have you done lately?"

After Tuesday night in Tampa I have to think Lowe is now the guy being sent to the pen. At least Wake shows an ability to get to the 5th inning.

Something to consider. If the Sox keep winning and the MFY can't wrap up the division by the weekend, the playoff rotation could become a mess. Wake would pitch Friday in Baltimore, with Schilling and Arroyo for the Saturday doubleheader.
