News

Outfielder Johnny Damon was placed on the 15-day disabled list prior to Monday night's game in Oakland. Damon suffered a jammed right pinky and missed the past three games, but an MRI exam revealed no tear and Damon was expected to return to the lineup.

Dave Roberts replaced Damon in the lineup, and he's the likely beneficiary for the next two weeks while Damon recovers.

MEHHHHHH.

damon is a key part to our success, but i mean dave roberts isnt bad at all. hes got more speed than johnny on the basepaths. it will be interesting to see what roberts can do for us. im pretty happy we got dave roberts in that trade now...

It would suck to lose Damon, but like shillingouttheks said....Dave Roberts is an able replacement.

Dave's been awesome so far for us, and I'm confident he can fill in until Johnny gets healthy!

I'm liking Roberts more and more after watching him play in some games. He's definitely capable. Johnny definitely helped us win, there's no denying that. He wasn't just a "get on base and score runs" type of guy, but he also got important hits and key RBIs. Roberts won't do this as much, but he will score runs and put pressure on pitchers with his speed.

It's a shame to lose Damon at such an important stretch of the season, but at least we should have him back to face the yankees in the all-important last matchup of the season (if all goes well).

man that sucks, I was wondering what was up with that. Johhny is essential and I think he will be sorely missed.

I like roberts as well. He probably is just as capable., I thought that attempted steal last night of third was idiotic but that aside he will fill in just fine.

The only thing is that he appears set on trying to bunt a lot, but I must say I have never seen him successfully bunt yet.

He's had some clutch hits, and some great plays in center, and he is fast.

Turns out to be a great pick up and I hope johnny gets well soon.

I don't understand...I haven't seen this information anywhere else. I saw it last night at Yahoo, but it hasn't been on the Sox's site...in fact the MLB preview for the game even mentioned a soon return for him. HMMMM.

Yea, this is kind of sketchy. Fanball is the only site reporting it, and it isn't really being discussed in detail anywhere. BDD hasn't even mentioned it...

no need to rush Damon we need 100% for the post season, and Boston is 10-1 when Roberts starts.

Crespo said it perfectly. I'd much rather lose Johnny now for 2-3 games than in 2 weeks for the rest of the season. He's VERY important to the success of this team.

The addition of Roberts only makes it EASIER to bench Johnny right now. Dave has done a fantastic job filling in. Dave won't match Johnny's offensive numbers, but certainly has played good defense and held his own with the bat.

There's no reason to rush Johnny back if he's not ready. Do we need him? Absolutely, he's a big reason why we're still in the hunt for the playoffs. Is it imperative that he's out there every day despite his injury? Heck no.

On the other hand, the Sox don't seem to have made a move to put Johnny on the DL....But what's the motivation? It's September, which means the Sox are carrying extra players anyway. Normally, you DL someone if they aren't going to play and you need an extra player. However, the Red Sox already are carrying extra outfielders (McCarty, Hyzdu, Millar, Kapler, Roberts for 2 spots)...Plus if you DL him, he's out of service for 15 days....what if he gets better in 5? you're stuck without a healthy Damon for 10 days in that senario.

Honestly, I haven't seen anywhere other than the above post reporting a Johnny -> DL move... so I'm starting to believe that report was false....

Get well soon, Johnny!

I've also heard rumors Damon may play tonite, so the DL thing seems to be false. Either way though, I think Damon should sit tonite (game 2 Oakland). The A's have a lefty on the hill and though Damon's not bad against southpaws, and Roberts is a lefty himself, resting him tonight would be a good idea. If his finger is still a little tender come the Seattle series, I see no reason to sit him then either. Since Seattle shouldn't be too tough, giving Damon more healing time wouldn't be a bad idea. After all, we don't need anymore guys on the DL this year.

So, I have no idea where this came from at all. DL? What?

After missing four games due to a jammed right pinkie finger, center fielder Johnny Damon returned to the lineup Tuesday night, occupying his customary leadoff slot. It was a perfect night for Damon to return to action, considering he is hitting .588 lifetime (10-for-17) against A's starter Mark Redman. In his first at-bat, he hit his third leadoff home run and 15th overall this season.

Damon, who has been arguably the team's third most important offensive cog behind Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz, nearly returned on Sunday. But he was a last-minute scratch after being bothered by the injury in batting practice. But he took some early hitting on Tuesday and was raring to get back in there.

"He went out and hit," said Francona. "He hit off a tee and then he hit live. He talked to the trainers and they gave him his blessing. He swung the bat real well."

So, I'll move this to the rumor mill.
