The Newark Star Ledger has indicated that Tom Glavine has cleared waivers, meaning he can be dealt to any team.

Sources say the Mets aren't interested in moving him, but if he becomes available, Theo has to make a move to pick this guy up.

Thoughts?

(a quote from the article)

KRIS BENSON and TOM GLAVINE have cleared waivers, according to baseball executives, and although the Mets are not planning to trade either pitcher, they do have interesting questions over the next nine days, when the demand for good starting pitchers should spike again. Having grossly miscalculated their chances to contend this season, especially in making their deals at the July 31 trade deadline, do the Mets decide they won't contend next year either and try to recoup some prospects? They could also use the threat of a trade to pressure Benson into signing a contract extension, something many around baseball think is inevitable, which might explain why a free agent eligible pitcher coveted at the July 31 deadline got through waivers. Regardless, contenders like the Rangers and Yankees are still hoping to add frontline pitching before Aug. 31, the date by which a player must be in an organization in order to be eligible to play for that team in the postseason. Although DEREK LOWE has improved since the Red Sox improved their infield defense, Boston has interest in Glavine, who would accept a trade to his hometown team. The Rangers would love to have Benson. ... Other players of interest who have cleared waivers and could be dealt in the coming days: ROBIN VENTURA, TODD ZEILE, Toronto's JOSH TOWERS and Kansas City starters DARREL MAY and BRIAN ANDERSON. Baltimore's SIDNEY PONSON has also cleared, but despite his recent run of good performances, won't be going anywhere with his bloated stomach and contract. As of Friday, AL LEITER and RANDY JOHNSON had not yet been placed on waivers. Both would likely be claimed by the Red Sox to prevent a possible trade to the Yankees. ... The Red Sox placed a claim on ROGER CLEMENS when he was put on waivers about two weeks ago, and although they never believed both he and the Astros would agree to a trade, they asked GM GERRY HUNSICKER anyway. Hunsicker said he wasn't ready to break apart his club, and even if he is now, he can't send Clemens to the Yankees, or anyone, which is the main reason the Red Sox placed the claim. ... The Yankees had the same motivation when they placed a claim on DAVID WELLS and had no interest in adding him to the team. They were afraid letting Wells go through waivers in early August would come back to haunt them if the Padres fell out of contention and then dealt him to Boston or another potential playoff opponent. ...

I've heard this mentioned, and despite the fact that he no longer has his two front teeth, I think he'd make a great addition to the team for one year. What we'd have to give up though may not be worth the few weeks we'd get out of him. He'd certainly help us get over the hump and make a push towards the playoffs though. Imagine a playoff series facing Pedro Schilling Glavine and (if need be) Wakefield.

Glavine would be very much like Schill (in that he's an excellent veteran pitcher, not that he pitches similarly), and having another Schill wouldn't be too bad...
