I believe he was initially approached for a spot in the derby, but he declined and they offered to Ortiz.

I read somewhere that while Oritiz was playing in winterball one year, he was involved in a HR hitting contest.

 

In ONE at bat, he hit 25 hrs.

Ortiz is a monster. But just because people hit a lot of regular season HR...doesn't mean HR Derby success....

 

Guys like Bret Boone, Chipper Jones...Have choked in previous years...

 

One thing to keep in mind will be Ortiz' longevity. I remember a couple years back McGwire hit 15 HR in the first round then got shut out.

looks like berkman might take it. He was absolutely crushing those balls. I guess he has a "home team" advantage. I was a little disappointed with only 3 homers by Ortiz, but it was his first time in the derby. If hes there next year, i guarantee he will hit more than 3.
