Hey, no game today...gotta chat about something! Here's the text from the article:

Braves shopping superstars

The Braves, winners of a remarkable 12 straight division titles, are close to giving up. Russ Ortiz will be available, and one source said even Andruw Jones might hit the trade market.

The Mets and Cardinals like Kris Benson, though not enough to pay the haul Pittsburgh currently seeks. Benson's no Freddy Garcia, but the Pirates have supply and demand going for them.

If the Mets fall out of it, Tom Glavine would consider accepting a trade. "I enjoy being here and I don't want to go anywhere. But you never say never," Glavine said. He never would say never to Boston, his hometown team. "That's one of the few I'd have to consider," he said.

One GM said Arizona should trade Randy Johnson. "They're terrible," the GM said. If things keep going like this, maybe Johnson begs his way out.

If Jimy Williams isn't in trouble, he should be. Gerry Hunsicker keeps getting Williams good players, yet the Astros can't separate themselves from the Brewers. Word is out that Hunsicker might take the hit instead, and if that's true, that's just wrong.

Barry Bonds fired agent Scott Boras this week, only days after Boras got into Bonds' face over Bonds' assertion that Boston is a "racist city." Boras wanted the focus on Bonds the great hitter and Boras thought remarks like those divert it elsewhere. Now Bonds himself is elsewhere, with the Beverly Hills Sports Council.

What I want to talk about from this:

Randy Johnson: If he's available, GO AFTER HIM! I still think he won't be though. Imagine a Curt/Randy reunion in Boston!

Tom Glavine: I wanted Boston to sign him two years ago when the Braves let him walk away. He says he'd consider a trade here, and Glavine really steps his game up when it counts. Great team player

Andruw Jones: A lot of people think his defense is going downhill since a couple years ago when he was being touted as "The Next Willie Mays." Still, he's got a cannon arm, but makes a lot of money. I think I'd stay away from Jones.

Russ Ortiz: Also a guy who steps it up when it counts. A warrior who loves the big games. He's my third choice here (in a perfect world), but if the Mets hang in it, and the Dbacks refuse to move Johnson....Ortiz would be a nice alternative.

The thing about Randy is that he has a no trade clause and I've heard that he really doesn't want to leave Arizona. Russ Ortiz could be a good fit here as he is a proven pitcher. Tom Glavine really hasn't impressed me over the last couple of years, maybe because he's playing for the Mets, but I don't think he'd be a good fit here in Boston, even though he's a lefty.

I like Tom Glavine. He's 7-4 this year, but over those 4 losses, he's only given up 9 ER. He also has 4 no decisions, and he only gave up 6 runs over those 4. His WORST start he gave up 4 ER over 6 innings. He got the ND. His problem has been lack of run support. That's it. He's getting paid $10,765,608 this year. That's a big hike in the payroll, but if we could trade Kim for him...holy hell. It's worth it. How much does Glavine have left on his current contract...if it's like 3 years, we have a similar situation to Curt Schilling.

Boras losing Bonds makes me happy. Boras losing his life would make me happier.

The Mets aren't going to trade anyone, especially Glavine, until July 31st, if they do it at all. They're trying to make a run at that division and by the time they are out of the race, it'll be too late to deal.

I don't want any part of Russ Ortiz, but Andruw Jones is intriguing on first glance. Then I look at the crippling contract that he has. 3 years, $39 million bucks remaining for a CF with a .800 OPS? His defense isn't worth that much. He seems to have stalled on his rise to stardom. A couple of years ago, I thought he was going to hit 600 homeruns in his career, but there seems to be something wrong with him. He might be hurt and Schuerholz is masking it to deal him. That's something to watch.

I would love RJ in Boston and I don't think it would cost as much as people think. Remember the Schilling deal? Casey Fossum (back of rotation lefty- hurt), Brandon Lyon (average middle reliever- hurt), Michael Goss (outfielder who could run, but would never hit above the Mendoza line) and Jorge de la Rosa (former top prospect who has a very high ERA for Milwaukee's AAA team). And that was to get a pitcher of equal caliber. Granted, this was a finance move to free up room for Richie Sexson, but I don't think it would take much more to land RJ. He is a 10-and-5 guy though, so he can waive any potential deal.

Steve Finley's name has also been mentioned in the rumor mill and the Sox as one of the potential bidders, but I have no idea what the fascination with getting another outfielder is. Pitching, pitching, pitching!

I think the Sox should wait on Kim and see how he does in getting his velocity back and then give him a trial in the rotation. Also, we might be able to get a starter when we deal Mendoza to Baltimore. They gave KC a top pitching prospect for Jason Grimsley, so we might be able to get a good, young starter from those idiots for Mendoza.

I think Glavine would THRIVE in Boston. Keep in mind: He's from right outside of Boston, meaning he'd waive a no-trade clause to come here.

I remember Glavine was one pitcher who was awesome in Coors' field. He's a groundball pitcher, so the Fenway dimensions shouldn't really affect him.

He signed a 3 year deal with the Mets before LAST season, meaning he has this year, and one more year after that. There MAY be an option after 2005, not sure.

Johnson is a LONG SHOT....

Tek33rules, Jones certainly doesn't compare to Mays, but he's a quality player. Don't you think (if he were to come to Boston) that would spell the departure of the big contract guys? (Tek,Petey,Nomar,Lowe?)
