They acquired Garcia and Ben Davis for Miguel Olivo and minor leaguers Jeremy Reed (top prospect) and Mike Morse. No link yet I saw it on ESPN BottomLine.

Just making a correction that it was Jeremy Reed who was the top prospect, not Jeremy West. Jeremy West is the 1st baseman for the Sarasota Red Sox.

Couple things:

1) Great deal for both teams. The White Sox are likely to extend Garcia and the Mariners get their C and CF of the future, both of whom are very good.

2) Yankees are out of trade options. The Mariners (for Moyer) and Braves (for Ortiz) already have superior catchers to Dioner Navarro (Yanks' top catching prospect, who in actuality sucks) and they can't really offer anything besides Navarro.

3) Sox don't trade the farm for this one. It was likely the Mariners wanted Shoppach and that ain't good for us.

That's all. ;)

Great trade for both sides I think.

Ben Davis was always a top prospect for San Diego, but couldn't turn that potential into success. Maybe Ozzie Guillen can help turn him around? Who knows....Either way, getting Freddy Garcia (a great pitcher, who LOVES big games) is a great move.

The Mariners got a good trio of players here too. Reed is a good prospect, Olivo is already having success at the major league level, and the Mariners are going NOWHERE this year. They needed to get younger, and they did exactly that. Bravo!

Again, Kenny Williams proves he's not afraid to pull the trigger....

I think the White Sox gave up way too much to try to get Freddy. I heard that Reed and another prospect might be good enough to trade for Freddy but they still added Olivo in the trade who is a young and comer. The White Sox also might not even sign Freddy after this year.

My guess is that the White Sox will try to acquire a veteran catcher because Ben Davis and Sandy Alomar aren't going to cut it.

Word is they might go after Ramon Castro if he isn't convicted of his rape charge. Castro's always had a lot of upside and power and Jack McKeon wants him out of town. It probably wouldn't take too much to trade for him either, maybe spinning off Ben Davis straight-up.

a Davis/Alomar Jr duo behind the plate certainly doesn't scare most people.

Seems like the White Sox are looking to make a splash in 2004, because with Magglio possibly gone, Frank Thomas having another good year (and getting old) they are interested in winning NOW.

Who might they go after?

Charles Johnson in Colorado used to be considered one of the top catchers in baseball. Since going to Colorado, he's been unimpressive.

Dan Wilson -- A seattle veteran catcher, who probably will hand a lot of playing time over to Olivo. This doesn't seem likely, since I bet if Chicago wanted Wilson they'd have gotten him in the Freddy Garcia trade.

Jason Kendall -- Probably the better catcher of the three, and probably the most tradable of the three. Has a big contract, but is still a solid defender and contact hitter. NO POWER this year, though.

Any other ideas? This is all I could think of for veteran catchers on non-contending teams.

Exactly, Davis hit under .100 with the M's, that sucks. Alomar is a bit better with a .278 average, but that still isn't that good.
