As I'm sure all Red Sox fans feel, I just want what's best for the team. I like Varitek's grittiness for lack of a better word. One thing bothers me though (actually more than one); why is it when a Sox pitcher has a good game, he usually credits Varitek with calling a GREAT game but when a pitcher has a lousy game, people generally say, "Wallace needs to work with this guy"? Varitek usually gets a lot of credit but rarely takes any blame for any of the negative things that happen. Just an observation....

Thats actually something that I've never thought about. You're right, I can never think of an instance where any player or fan or team personnel said "Varitek was off of his game tonight, so we lost the game". It's always someone else's fault. So, by highlighting the good and the good only..... is Tek overrated?

And sentimental rambles are ok by me. :D

Simply because varitek is having a bad offensive season doesnt mean you have to all jump off the varitek bandwaggon....Varitek is clearly a better defensive catcher than Jorge is...there is no disputing that...Jorge also has 4 rings to Variteks 0...i know varitek is slumping...but the relationship he has with the pitching staff and his intelligence is amongst the tops in the league...sure he doesnt have an arm like pudge, and like ive mention, his offensive is a bit slacking as of late....but I think we are gonna see some huge turn arounds from a lot of playoffs...hopefully soon and after the AS break

Based upon the reaction I've gotten, I say yes he is overrated by Sox fans, but the rest of the league treats him as what he is.

In response to Tek04, I have never been a Varitek fan, so there's no jumping off the bandwagon here. I liked the trade back in 1997 mostly because it got rid of Slocumb, but I had always thought the Mad Hatter was the better player, but that is neither here nor there.

As far as the Varitek/Posada comparisons, Posada is so bad behind the plate that Varitek is easily a better defender, but that isn't hard. Varitek isn't a top 10 defender in the league and he isn't a top 5 hitter. He's also at the age where catchers start to decline and bringing him back after this season would only mean extra money on an injury-prone, aging catcher. I'm not prepared to become the Mets with their stupid contracts, I don't know about you. As far as the relationships with pitchers, that is very overplayed. Every catcher and their pitching staff work together. Varitek is no revolutionary when it comes to this stuff, they all do it. It is just that the Boston media wants to hype up their players when they do even the simplest of tasks.

I'm going to say it again and I have nothing more to say: Brining back Jason Varitek after this season is not a smart business move and would not be beneficial to the team on the field.

Well I think ESPN analyst and sports analyst and general tend to know what they are talking about when they are saying Varitek is a good player...and everyone, not just me, is saying that Tek is the number 1 priority to sign for next season...so I tend to think most of these people know what they are talking about

In all honesty, the media can go take a flying **** for themselves. The only people calling Varitek the #1 priority are Jackie McMullen from the Herald and those two nit-wits Buck and McCarver when they did a Fox game that the Sox were in. Other than that, I don't see anyone saying it is Varitek as priority #1, especially the people who have first-hand knowledge of Varitek, the Sox finances along with Varitek's outrageous demands and the Sox system. These people know that Varitek is expendible to some degree unless his price comes down.

Here's a fantastic article on the risk it is to re-sign Varitek. We are seeing the beginning of the decline, folks. I knew it was coming at some point this season.

I think all four of the FA's are on the decline... but Nomar and Pedro are mainly victims of their own previous success.

I absolutely agree, YanksHater...I wouldn't mind seeing Varitek walk, we've got Shoppach ready in the wings. DLowe is expendable, and who knows what's up with Nomar. Imagine what kind of players we could bring in with the resources saved by only signing Pedro?

Which leads to another question...does anyone have a list of 2005 free agents? I know some of the big names (Beltran, Garcia, O. Perez, etc.), but it'd be interesting to see what other options the Red Sox have available for 2005.

Add Carl Pavano to that list and remove Kevin Millar.
