I think the Boston Red Sox should abandon the search for Carlos Beltran. He's simply not worth the price. What the Sox could use (in my mind) is a utility infielder (no, Crespo isn't cutting it for me), and of course, more pitching. Here's my ideas:

Russ Ortiz (Atlanta)

This is contingent on the Braves falling out of the race. They're 5 games out, but historically come on after the all-star break. If this happens, this will happen later. The Braves, with their consecutive division winning streak, will probably have a hard time giving up players at the deadline, BUT Shurholtz is a smart GM, and may realize he can pick up a few quality prospects for Ortiz.

Livan Hernandez (Montreal)

The Expos are out of it. Livan helped Florida win it all in 1997, and helped San Fransisco to the series in 2002.

Ted Lilly/Miguel Batista (Toronto)

Lilly's a lefty, so he might add something to the rotation, plus he has been decent in Toronto. Batista has also been solid with Toronto.

Frank Catalanotto (Toronto)

Maybe could come as a package with one of the abovementioned pitchers? Catalanotto is a good hitter, and can play a bunch of positions. Plus gives them a lefty off the bench. Hits with RISP. The only knock on him is he's been injured (groin) this year.

Any other ideas? What do you think of my ideas?

The Sox will probably be in the rumor mill until the deadline, but I think for once they should leave their everyday roster as is. I would like to see a trade involving Millar, Mueller and Kim (Mendoza too if possible), but I'd rather get prospects or draft picks in return. With the roster almost perfectly intact this team has few, if any flaws. I've always wanted a lefty in the rotation, and trading Lowe may not be a bad idea, but I can live with him for the rest of the year. Otherwise, the rotation, when all pitchers are on, is scary. The only question mark is Arroyo, but he's not that bad for a number five, especially when you consider the Yankees have Lieber. The lineup leaves opposing pitchers with little room for error. The only flaw is at DH (when Ortiz plays first), but McCarty can have good nights, as can Kapler and Daubach (if they'd ever keep him up in the bigs) when hot can really tear it up. Meanwhile, the pen is loaded with great young and experienced talent. I'll even be crazy enough to say that the biggest weakness has been Foulke. Williamson looks great after a stint on the DL. Timlin is very reliable. Embree had a rough month, but his early season performance shows he's quite capable. I like DiNardo and Malaska, and they are great for games that are not close so that the more used pitchers can rest. I do hope the Sox don't get rid of Damon. He's one of the best lead- off hitters in the game as well as a fan favorite. His speed is a great dynamic. What's more is that he is a great fielder. His ability was displayed against the Twins in a game in which he made two great running catches which displayed his amazing range. This lineup wsa put together with the assumption that it could take us to the promised land. So why toy with it?

The reason to toy with the team, is that they are not playing good baseball this year. They had a good April, but as I've stated, have been a .500 team since. This team is in need of re-enforcements!

Johnny Damon's speed is an asset, but Terry Francona doesn't take advantage of it!

Lol, so, you'd like to trade our worst players away? Who wouldn't! But I see your point. Welcome to the site as well.

I actually read a report that Baltimore might be interested in Mendoza. If the Sox could make a deal involving Mendoza and maybe Kim to Baltimore...what could they get?

Think a deal could be constructed to get Melvin Mora? he's a quality player, can play all OF positions, SS, 3B.

Here's my idea:

Ramiro Mendoza

BK Kim

cash

FOR

Melvin Mora

I don't think we should do the Mora deal because he traditionally slumps in the 2nd half of the season. I also don't think the Orioles would want Mendoza and Kim until they prove themseleves again in the big leagues

That's true about Baltimore probably not wanting the pair before they prove themselves. It was just an idea I threw out there...

It surprised me to hear you say Mora typically struggles in the second half, but I looked up the stats, and by golly, you're right! His average has fallen off after the ASB in every season since 2000 (and thats as far back as I looked). Although last year he only had 69 ABs after the break.....

I've heard the Finley rumors as well. I don't understand why the Sox need more offense. Just leave that alone and go after some pitching, we all know that pitching is what it takes to win it all. Nomar and Trot are back and already raking, this offense is fine.

I've heard the Steve Finley rumors, but not lately.

I would say upgrade defense, because errors have killed the team lately, but I don't see any players really hurting us consistently enough to warrent replacing them.....or even any players who would be better than what we've got.

Steve Finley would be a solid pickup, he's got a great bat and good outfield D. I don't see him playing every day though with the players the Sox already have. Great bench player though if he's willing to take the hit in playing time.

Pitching should still be the priority. Garcia's gone, who else seems available?

Russ Ortiz might be a good pick up

He walks way too many people. That would really get him in trouble against the better, more patient teams we would have to face down the stretch. Ortiz does it on purpose too, because he's trying to get hitters to chase because he has underwhelming stuff. It's not like he has a mechanical problem that can be fixed, he is actively trying to throw s*** in the dirt.
