but varitek is supposed to serve a suspension sometime (maybe he already did) and they were gonna bring up Andy Domnique, why not bring up Shop?

That's what they are considering. Since Dominque was sent down, he had 10 days before he could be called back up. I still think he has three games left before the Sox can recall him. Calling up Shoppach would be a numbers game, though. You'd have to add him to the 40-man roster and drop someone else, which becomes a sticky situation. Then you have to find a place for him on the 25-man roster, although not as risky (as far as potentially losing a player to waivers), it's just as complicated. I don't see him up this year outside a potential September call-up.

Shopp went 1-3 with a 2B and K yesterday. Today, he went 0-2 with 2 BB's.

Season Line: .230/.315/.459/.774; .33 (40/120) BB/K ratio; 19 2B, 20 HR, 60 RBI

EDIT: My math is bad. I gave him 2 extra OBP points.

Impersonator?

Yeah, ban him please. That's really annoying.

Shopp went 1-3 with 2 walks and no K's. He's showing much better plate discipline this month. That's eight walks in 13 games this month and four in the last three.

Season Line: .231/.318/.459/.777; .35 (42/121) BB/K ratio; 20 2B, 20 HR, 60 RBI

Will he hit for a decent avg. in the majors since he isn't in AAA?

Hey Zenny, Look we even joined on the same day, the 15th and a month that begins with an A. We must be twins.

Forum about Kelly Shoppach.

The Shoppinator went 0-4 with a K today. So much for the power surge and all that walking.

Shopp went 1-3 with a 2B, BB and 2 K. He's taking his walks, getting XBH's and doing his typical striking out.

I'd be much more pleased if he got his average up to around .250 or higher. .229 isn't that impressive. I guess it'll come with time (I hope).

He hit .270 in June, had a bad July (was run down, but really picked it up at the end of the month) and is hitting just about .270 again this month (but with a .378 OBP and .654 SLG%). I think with a half season at Pawtucket next year, he should show vast improvement and be all set, I believe.

Zen, Do you think this guy will hit in the majors? If so, what kind of avg. do you think he will have?

He'll probably hit between .250-.275, but he'll have an OBP about .100 points higher than his batting average and he'll slug around .500 with 25-30 homeruns. I still do think he needs the beginning of next season in Pawtucket, though.

Shop needs to pull his avg up if he is ever going to make it to the majors.

Oh, he'll be making the majors. The question is how long or how productive his career will be.

From what I've been reading here, it seems like Shopp is the ultimate streaky player. He hits well for a while, and then just falls into the funk to end all funks.

Plus he seems to be striking out an awful lot.

That seems to be the case. He can carry a team for two weeks and be an automatic out for the next month. Sounds like the catcher we already have.
