  1. I dont think the prospects are going to immediately take the MLB world by storm. And I dont think Bregman blocks em. We have question marks at 5 positions.
  2. I agree, its about stockpiling options and hoarding. Simply not worth it from a cost-benefit perspective to start jettisoning guys off so guys who would be an option to fill a hole become "must fill that hole" Thats my only point. Bregman would be an option at 3b, 2b, 1b, even OF and he'd be a decent bet to lead the team in OPS. It makes sense, not sure its going to happen. But if he goes to Detroit, its hard to see this team making a serious playoff push.
  3. We need to improve the lineup as a whole. Are you trying to just be competent this year or actually compete?
  4. And if they are not going to move Devers off 3b immediately, they should still sign Bregman because Story could get hurt again, Devers could get hurt, Casas could get hurt, Yoshida could suck, Campbell could need more time, Grissom could stink....And its not going to be a 1 yr deal. Of course, Bregman would find his way to 3b. We dont need Bregman as our opening day 3b for him to be nice to have. Things change. Bregman adds a lot to this team. ANd he prob would be a 4fwar 2b. He would be above average defensively and hed mash at fenway. Of course, his fwar would be better at 3b and I prefer him at 3b, and thats where i think he'll ultimately end up. I just think hes still worth signing, even if he plays 2b during April. How we end next year is very unlikely to be the same exact player at the same exact position as we started the year.
  5. Bregmans value extends well beyond upgrading 3b defense. Hed prob lead the team in OPS next year.
  6. Settling for .729 is how you stay mid. We have two good hitters on this team, Bregman would be a third. Fit him in however you wish, but there is certainly room. Unless you think this team is good as is.
  7. A weakness at 3B? We have a perennial all-star at 3b who received MVP votes 5 of the last 6 years. We've had nothing at 2b for multiple years running, and Story is an injury risk. There will be room for Campbell and Anthony to win jobs even with Bregman. Where they line up to start the year, Im not married to. Devers is projected 3.8 WAR next year, followed by Duran at 3.7. Then a huge drop off. Thats pretty weak. Bregman is a good bet for 4+. Hes been over 4 each of the last 3 years despite a slow start last year.
  8. Well you asked if "we could see it" with "it" being a platoon at 3b of Campbell and Grissom
  9. Quite a dismissal , using superficial stats. He had a .833 OPS second half of last year, despite a .250 BABIP, which is terrible luck. Adjust for luck, and its .850, in line with his career average. 31 years old isnt 35. A gold glove winner at 3b who came up a SS is obviously a plus 2b defensively. And you can always move him to 3b if someone gets hurt or theres a trade. Bregman is still a very good baseball player. Dont overthink it.
  10. All catchers are mediocre hitters and the dugout handles the pitchers these days. Catchers are JAGs. Sure pitch framing and controlling the run game are nice to haves, but they wont impact our playoff chances as much as adding a middle of the order bat like Bregman. Bregman for 2b
  11. Agreed. Its fine enough. Im more worried about him getting hurt.
  12. Or they see third base defense as problem #8 to be addressed and arent going to get that far down their list.
  13. No way they are punting on 2025. They may end up looking that way , if we are out of it early, but no way its the plan at present.
  14. Bregman would still help this team, quite a bit. And hed play second. Getting Devers off third isnt a priority, getting a quality RHB is. Breg would be fine at 2b.
  15. Nope. You are going to see Devers at 3b everyday, Casas at 1b everyday, and Yoshida at DH.
  16. I lean this way as well.
  17. I still think its above 50% we get one of TH , Santander , Bregman. And I think TH is the likeliest of the three.
  18. I hear you on the Lester offer. Also the "hold on I need a sec" from when Bloom heard Xander was leaving. But to think its all a continuing sham is too cynical and conspiratorial for me, not to imply there havent been some shams along the way.
  19. Understood, your take is more "line in the sand" as to why they are casting such a wide net.
  20. Fair value is never the goal. You only take fair value when you cant get better. At least at this point in season, might be diff if you are 1 hr away from trade deadline or on a losing streak (read: need to act fast)
  21. Im not comfortable with the notion that because they are lining up plans b,c,d they arent truly trying for plan A. I think this may have become the case with Soto (started focusing more on secondary options, when the bidding reached uncomfortable levels), but wasnt the case from the onset. Im not conspiratorial enough to think its pretend interest. Line in the sand, I can believe. But the numbers for TH arent crazy. 3 yrs / 70m sounds reasonable.
