  1. Quote from MLB.com: "He’ll pair with Liam Hendriks to give the South Siders a lethal one-two punch at the back end of the bullpen." My Red Sox heart just relaxed. But I still hope Kimbrel isn't lethal to White Sox fans come October.
  2. It gets higher if Bloom adds a good starting pitcher in the next hour to a rotation headed by Eovaldi... and if just one of Sale/Houck/ERod/Pivetta emerges as a consistent strike-thrower through October. The Front Office has to be thinking the same thing. Add a solid starter and another reliable bullpen arm, and go to war.
  3. Yup. A top three of Eovaldi, Sale and Houck features two huge question marks the next two months. The Jays trio of Ryu, Ray and Berrios have all been good all year. And the Rays only have dozens of guys who throw 98.
  4. For what it's worth, Gray's career splits as a Rocky are slightly better in ERA and BA in Colorado than on the road.
  5. Guardians are sellers. Bloom and Co. have to be calling about a Cleveland starting pitcher... Edit: didn't realize Civale and Bieber both on 60-day IL
  6. He's my one untouchable prospect, other than Mayer. To win the pennant, I'd part with Downs and even Duran (if the brass projects Jimenez with a comparable future).
  7. Jays aren't winning with Bichette at short, just like the Yankees aren't with Torres. The Rays are good defensively (even after dealing their top shortstop earlier this season). And this week they traded both a member of their starting rotation and their closer (they love recycling bullpen arms). Sox now have to either part with a top three prospect for a starting pitcher like Hendricks, or just focus on one of the last good relievers remaining. Rodriguez from Pittsburgh has to be a top target.
  8. The latest cost on MLB.com for Scherzer or Berrios is either Casas, Downs or Duran. I'd happily give up Downs for either, especially with deeper infield prospect depth after the draft. But there's no way I'm trading the next half decade of Casas or Duran for a chance at upgrading this season. Not when other moves -- like for relatively inexpensive first basemen and relievers -- can also improve this club in much cheaper ways.
  9. I'm thinking the comparisons of Houck as a righty Sale make him another inevitable Tommy John patient -- and that the Sox might want to maximize his value before it's too late. That includes maxing out on his youth with high leverage starting/relieving getting to and through the postseason... or using Houck as the centerpiece in an impact trade for a Berrios-type arm.
  10. Heretic! Next, you'll be saying Cal Ripken's head grew from the time he was a rookie through his later Iron Man armors. Hey, wait a minute...
  11. Ideally... but now he's 37 and left his last start early with a triceps issue. Scherzer's average salary was $35 million each of the past three years; how much will he and Special Agent Boras demand for an extension to agree to wear Red Sox regalia?
  12. I'm ambivalent about reports that Boston ownership is pushing for Scherzer. I'm not saying Bloom doesn't want Max, but hope this "leak" doesn't pressure him to give up top prospects. Let Chaim do his thing, and get his cost-efficient first baseman -- Rizzo, Schoop, Cron -- and bullpen arm -- Rodriguez, Hudson, Hand, etc. The big money commitments to acquire Scherzer (an extension large enough to lure him away from his preferred west coast) or Kimbrel (signed through '22 for twice as much as Barnes) go against Bloom's longterm plan... and don't guarantee a postseason where the Sox will outhit Houston, Chicago or even Toronto -- if the young Jays make a run into the playoffs.
  13. I couldn't do it. My kid, who's smarter than me, was all in, rooting against Tampa. I warned him of the risks, changing the bummers back to summer... overall, it's just healthier to focus on the Red Sox taking care of their own business.
  14. At their peaks, Scherzer-Sale-Eovaldi would make any playoff team a favorite. But not this year; even with a healthy Scherzer, if Sale is allowed to take a regular turn in the rotation the last two months, he will be fitted with ball-and-chainmail, zip ties and Houdini ropes. The Sox won't let him go all out past 5 or 6 innings, which means the biggest need by Friday is... ...a reliable Gumby reliever -- because they undoubtedly have pitch counts or batter limits on Whitlock and Houck, and can't know for sure if a demoted starter like Richards or Perez can even transition to long man coming out of the pen mid-game.
  15. The cost is more than prospects, according to reports that Scherzer is also seeking an extension in order to waive his 10-5 rights to refuse a trade to someplace he'd rather avoid...
  16. Yup, it would seem to go against everything Bloom has stood for if he gave up a good prospect for an old pitcher who was shut down early in his last start with a sore arm (and whose team won't let him pitch again until he's traded).
  17. ... I started to think a Scherzer trade and subsequent extension would mean the Sox deemed he'd be part of their sustainable future. Then I saw your mention of Price, and that brought back uncomfortable flashbacks to Dombro's plan going into 2019, counting on a veteran but aging rotation fraught with recent postseason strain. So now I'm thinking no to Scherzer. Bloom is just as likely to seek and swing an unexpected deal for an under-30 controllable arm that BTV over-Vs.
  18. I think Scherzer does make the Sox the favorites... IF Sale is All-Star Eovaldi level (but right now, the rehabbing Sale is not). If so, then an All-Star trio at the top of the rotation definitely favors the Sox to at least get to the World Series. In the next three days the Boston brass has to decide if their evaluators and trainers think Sale will transition back to above-average MLB starter... in the next month. If not, don't go all-in for Max... instead, pick up another decent starter and reliever, and trust in Cora and the hitters to keep it fun. Which approach is more likely?
  19. I keep hearing and reading Boston brass and media say it, and want to believe it... while doing all I can to temper expectations. It's four years later and a major operation since Sale's first year in Boston and his last year that he dominated the AL for an entire season. We know we can't expect Hall of Fame Sale. But will anything less than All-Star Eovaldi level be a disappointment? More importantly, will it be enough to win the East? Can we settle for inconsistent Pivetta level, with one or two bad innings every outing offset by a majority of quality starts?
  20. Starting to think the Sox will explore every shot at acquiring a good starting pitcher up to Friday, and if all else fails, they'll then go hard after a good bullpen arm. Most posters think there's no way Bloom will trade any top prospects to make a splash, but what if the target isn't a rental, but someone he envisions as part of that sustainable core he always discusses? This deadline may not be just about going all-in for '21... The Reds' Luis Castillo is 4-10 with a 4.20 ERA (and other mediocre metrics), but still holds a 79.4 trade value on the simulator. Compare that with some of the Marlins' young guns: Sanchez 56.1, Alcantara 61.9, Lopez 82.7... Jose Berrios is only 42.9.
  21. If they're all healthy, it will be Marwin for his reliable defensive versatility and veteran experience. The other three are lesser defenders (though Chavis has improved this go-round).
  22. I agree, but what I was thinking when he brought in Lowiseguy was he can't possibly be as effective after just throwing total gas last night. Green didn't pitch Saturday; they're humans.
  23. The Sox got five-hitted! Gotta give Eck credit for saying no-hitter a few times while it was still intact; he's coming around as a good homer -- not as bad as Hawk Harrelson, but not a decrepit dinosaur like Goose Gossage, either. I love Cora, but I'm still equally a Tito fan, even post-Sox days -- like the day Bauer had a tantrum and threw a ball over the centerfield fence... Tito hurried out to the mound, clearly yelled (lip-readers concur): "What the f*** is wrong with you?", and immediately traded his ass out of Cleveland during a pennant race.
  24. It's ok, you can say it: because he's throwing a NO-HITTER ps. not just pitching to no hitters
  25. Obee's afraid to say NO-HITTER when it's a Yankee pitcher he might jinx?
