  1. When Robles tried to start a brawl in Toronto, I swear I saw a few Jays players intervene to block Bogey and Devers from rushing Hansel.
  2. Prediction, if Boston doesn't make the playoffs: Years from now, when fans remember the 2021 Red Sox -- 23 games over .500 with 59 games left -- the poster boy for cautionary tales of all-time trade deadline failures will be Hansel Robles.
  3. I nominate the Yazez
  4. Diego Castillo? Do you really want to challenge the Rays' genius transactions department when they deem a reliever expendable in the middle of a pennant race? This is a first-place defending champ with 16 pitchers on the IL right now, and a bullpen featuring only 2 of 8 from Opening Day.
  5. He's a shortstop in the Tigers' org, currently batting .109... but he's only 20. I heard Bloom offered Detroit DeShields, Downs, Davis and Robles for Miggy's contract and young Pedro. BTV calls it a slight overpay, but the key to the trade is Junior.
  6. I was complicit. But I suspected Bloom would pull the trigger, most likely if he didn't think Barnes would re-sign. Of course it doesn't make sense for contenders to deal closers mid-season... but that's exactly what the Rays did at the deadline, and even the Mariners. By the way, Seattle's players were outraged, which they should be...
  7. DeDodgers dealt for DeDad of Delino DeShields for Pedro Martinez.
  8. The worst thing that devious dastard Doctor Doom did was steal the power cosmic from the Silver Surfer.
  9. This... and, it was his job to finish no matter what, to save the rest of the pen for a game in question. Everyone realizes that pitchers throw differently with a 19-run lead; they're not going to risk straining ligaments snapping off vicious breaking balls. Throw the ball down the middle and wait until batters hit into outs. Problem is, good pro hitters know this, too, and get to swing from their heels (especially with no pressure)...
  10. Franchy is not a big leaguer in any facet of the game. Hoping every day is the day that a fastball finally hits the barrel of his bat and sails over a fence is no excuse for him to be anywhere near the diamond during a pennant race.
  11. I wanted a reliable reliever so Cora wouldn't have to burn out the key pen guys. Not Kimbrel, but one of the many decent arms that changed teams. This has been discussed ad mausoleum since last winter... when Bloom decided he wanted no part of relievers who cost $10 mil -- so he took Otto and a lotto tic for $8 mil. And from the past, we've known all about Barnes on back-to-back days, in tie games, in two-inning stints, and really -- any closer in non-save situations. Now he is definitely cooked, physically and mentally. But I love how Cora thanks Bloom for Hansel and Gretel by instead choosing to throw Perez in late innings.
  12. This may be one of those (non-Bogie) X-factors that affects any quantitative data that debaters point to... Consider, for instance, a great, deep batting order; we'll call them the '03 Red Sox. Imagine a lineup so productive it features eight 8 regulars with 85 or more RBIs. Who do you pitch around? Who do you pitch to? Who is "clutch"? Top 3 '03 Red Sox BA/OPS (source: bb-ref) 2 outs, RISP: Manny .370/1.279; Todd Walker .343/.996; Bill Mueller .333/.912 Late & Close: Papi .306/1.071; Trot Nixon .303/1.064; Varitek .298/1.001 Tie Game: Kevin Millar .348/1.104; Manny .347/1.091; Nixon .317/1.037 Btw: Boston's RBI leader in '03 was Nomar with 105. He hit .228/.720 with 2 outs, RISP. Unclutch? ...or the one guy opposing teams refused to let beat them?
  13. Are you referring to JD's three-run HR in the bottom of the first in Game 1 of the 2018 ALDS? That was definitely a great moment for Sox fans watching in the stands or in front of TV sets. To me, it wasn't so much a Sox-Yanks response -- even though after 3 Sox WS titles, Fox was still showing a million clips of Dent, Boone and Buckner for every Tek mitt-sandwich to ARod's puss. That shot was more like a clarion call to the MLB that Boston, with its new star clean-up man, was again a serious threat, after quick playoff exits the previous two years. In '18 Martinez definitely delivered, leading the big leagues with 130 RBI in the regular season, and again in the postseason, with 14 RBI in 14 games.
  14. True. Many of us would pay good money to have more years...
  15. Ortiz' two-run HR in the top of the first in Game 7 of the '04 ALCS is the most underrated and generally forgotten clutch moment in this Red Sox century. It wasn't a walk-off, and the game became a blow-out, but in that time and setting, it instantly changed a bloodthirsty crowd's maniacal mayhem into total dead silence.
  16. Game Seven ALCS: the visitors' go-ahead run gets gunned down at the plate and the home crowd is rocking in glee like it's 2003... but it was 2004. The very next batter pushes the mute button, bombing a home run to put the good guys ahead for good. David Ortiz, top of the first inning, Yankee Stadium...
  17. I would be as shocked if JD opted out as I would if Bloom extended him.
  18. No worries. Coincidentally, Bradford wrote a column today about how KP should be playing more (though he didn't use the word platoon with Vazstremski).
  19. Bloom will flash big mahket money to change his mind. Remember, this the front office that bragged about resetting last year. And if you forgot, they'll tweet to remind you.
  20. When your overworked star closer is spiking his bender into the dirt, there isn't much choice what to call for -- whether you're Johnny Bench or Jonny Gomes...
  21. I think IL Schwarber was acquired more with an eye on next year -- or whichever year Bloom deems worthy of actually going for it. Anything the Sox got from ILS this season would be an added bonus.
  22. That's acceptable for this rotation. We have to settle for quadrangle starts: 4ish innings of 4-run ball... and it's even better if the last tally is an inherited runner.
  23. But is 75% of Schwarber better than pinch-hitting Marwin against 101 mph in the 9th?
  24. Semien or Springer? Edit: It doesn't really matter. Once it was evident Barnes couldn't put away the back-up catcher batting 9th -- and that he couldn't get his curve over -- that any MLB hitter would be sitting dead red.
  25. Top of the world? Who knows. Probably not. But it would've improved the club's chances to win more games the rest of the regular season, added reinforcements by addressing an immediate need, and maybe provided a morale booster by showing the players, manager and coaches that the organization had enough faith in them this year to have their backs by rewarding them for a great first half. This year.
