    Correa does not have a QO, so think like Bloom: we can replace Bogaerts with a younger Correa and get a draft pick for Xander signing elsewhere.

    The Red Sox choose not to resign Bogaerts nor Devers, and then don't reinvest this offseason in bonafide star baseball players... ... based on everything we know about Bloom -- and not Henry, who hired him -- evaluate the above statement with the more likely adjective: possible or probable.

    In on the pitchers. I'm already on record for wanting Eovaldi back, and Rogers as a bounce-back closer (All-Star just two years ago). Senga throws 101 mph. Conforto is only intriguing. Can he return to a 25 homer, .350 OBP guy? He's been a negative dWAR outfielder the past six seasons in a row. As I've said before: at this point in the Bloom Era, Red Sox fans just deserve more than hoping for yet another rehabbing ballplayer to make a comeback contribution...

    Free agents ineligible for Qualifying Offers... any of these guys would be much more appealing to Bloom and his luxurious taxpaying ilk (my bold-faced choices aren't that bold...). José Abreu (White Sox), Brandon Belt (Giants), Carlos Correa (Twins), Nelson Cruz (Nationals), Zack Greinke (Royals), Kenley Jansen (Braves), Craig Kimbrel (Dodgers), AJ Pollock (White Sox), David Robertson (Phillies), Carlos Santana (Mariners), Will Smith (Astros), Noah Syndergaard (Phillies), Justin Verlander (Astros).     I know. But there are only so many #1 and #2 free agents available before we have to start using prospect capital in trades. I'm not opposed to the Sox using both the budget and farm to improve the rotation, because it's the key back to respectability. Bello and Pivetta are the only two projected starters who are entirely healthy, and most people rate each as a #4 or #5 (though Bello's stuff is as good as anyone else's). Bloom can stockpile as many #5s as he wants, just so long as he doesn't skimp on top quality, too. There's always the chance in a rebuild that a front office adds to its roster just to field a big league team, and then bills it as improvement. Depth is definitely essential, but a staff deep in #5s is destined for the depths of the division.

    It is for me, because by now I know better than to count on any injured or rehabbing Sox projected for the '23 starting rotation. I will take anything I can get as a bonus from Sale/Paxton/Whitlock/Houck etc., but the last thing Boston needs is another pitcher trying to make a comeback. Want a free agent arm from the Dodgers? Sign Tyler Anderson, who won 15 games last season. Heaney was only durable enough to go 4-4 for a club that won 111 regular season games. If the Sox lose Wacha and Eovaldi, they realistically need to add three new starters to the rotation to sniff respectability. I'm not opposed to deGrom, but he's also damaged goods, so I'd target Bassitt and Anderson, too. Or Rodon. There's a lot of dough coming off the books, and even more when Bogaerts signs elsewhere.

    A Heaney signing would just be a continuation of Bloom's low-risk, bungee-cord, we're-bored acquisitions (the kind of move some in the industry think he can't survive another winter doing). But true fans will know we're really in trouble when rumors start circulating about star players and the Red Sox' "interest." Then it will be time to take a long winter's nap.

    Lugo is not lights-out, but sometimes lights-flickering (three '22 Mets postseason games: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K). At least he's a big league reliever... Re. Heaney: a last-place rotation doesn't really need another #5 starter. I'd rather bring back Wacha or Eovaldi; they've both proven they can pitch in Boston, and can't cost that much more. If Bloom signs Heaney, it'd better be at the same press conference that introduces Chris Bassitt.

    Of the rotation and bullpen listed, all but Bello, Pivetta and Schreiber are coming off injuries, surgeries or Barnes issues. Fortifying the pitching staff with big leaguers has to be the priority. We already know a line-up with All-Star hitters like X, JD and Raffy can finish dead last without pitching. Sign Rodon, Montero and Eflin while they're still available.

    If they let Devers become a free agent, a year from now will be a rerun of the same pretensions they're now spewing about Bogaerts, as he heads out the door. Where is the love? Somewhere warmer...

    I'm not prepared (and seriously doubt Bloom is, either) to deal either Rafaela or Bleis period -- not to mention in addition to Yorke and a pitching prospect; especially not for one position player. The only way I'm emptying the farm -- and besides Mayer, all those guys are the best in the system -- is for Alcantara or another ace starter in his mid-20s. And when's another time BTV is this relevant? Are Gonzalez and Duran really an overpay to the Marlins for Pablo Lopez and Garcia's contract?

    A's are ready to deal Sean Murphy, a #1 catcher that can spearhead a rebuild. BTV accepts a trade of Yorke, Houck and Schrieber... but instead of the latter (a reliever coming off his first good year who will be 29 at the start of 2023), maybe the A's would instead prefer Walter -- the Sox' #2 pitching prospect. A new team will acquire Murphy this winter.

    Why does this quote always seem to sum up the entire pitching staff? Here's the thing about upgrading the bullpen: the Red Sox need to acquire at least two relievers who were legitimately good in 2022 -- not guys who were once good closers and are now bad to mediocre; not guys who are coming off injuries or operations; and not guys -- please -- who were never good, but someone in some office analyzing some graph has data to show they might be good... someday. The new Red Sox relievers don't necessarily have to be called "closers," since those are the most expensive of relievers. But having a lockdown set-up man or two at the back end, in the 7th and 8th innings; would've made the difference in four or five more wins last season -- and at least a winning record. This is a last place team we're discussing. Boston needs to get back to respectability before it can actually get serious.

    If a budget-conscious CBO is considering giving Nimmo $100+M for 5 years, isn't Benintendi a much better value? Beni -- not Nimmo -- was an All-Star and Gold Glover the past two seasons. Andrew is also two years younger...

    I should have said since they both left New York... Gray has pitched in 92 games. Paxton has pitched in one. But I won't argue health. It's probably the story with every pitching staff since the beginning of time... yet it somehow with Bloom rotations it seems like an even bigger factor than talent and potential. Hell, when I was healthy, even I was much better (at a few things, anyway).

    Paxton never seemed better than "medium upside, high no-side" (or "hide and go seek)." He's not even Sonny Gray... or Sonny and share. Definitely not Santino, who at least made it to the tollbooths on the causeway.

    Ya, this winter may be more important than ever for Bloom that any pitchers he acquires, actually, you know... pitch. 2022 pitchers starting a minimum of 25 games -- Houston: 5, Boston: 2 (Pivetta and Hill). Past Red Sox rotations -- 2021: 3, 2018: 3, 2013: 4, 2007: 3, 2004: 5, 1986: 4, 1975: 3, 1967: 1 (Jim Lonborg, who started 39).

    If fangraphs numbers materialize, would Red Sox fans rather have deGrom at 3 for $141M or Rodon at 5 for $120M? Each have injured histories and could become Sale contracts at any second. If I had to choose, I'd take Rodon because of the AAV -- $24M is basically half of $47M for deGrom -- which would be a lot better for a rebuilding team's budget. Also in 2023, Rodon will be 30. deGrom will be 35 -- or two years older than Nathan Eovaldi.
