  1. Hey, man, this isn't the Dan Duquette Era -- we don't sign any prime timers without injured histories. While we're at it -- Sox fans in the 2020s -- let's trade Verdugo for a Choi-like return (Double A reliever) and go with this trio: Brantley-Keirmaier-Haniger. Btw, I'd also add Abreu as DH/back-up 1B. Would these moves to replace Bogey, JD and Doogie make the Red Sox any better? Maybe not, but the front office can spin the change-as-improvement in the charge out of the basement in seek of a wild card.
  2. The M's already made some moves, by locking up their solid starting rotation for at least the next three years. Seattle has five pitchers who made 25 or more starts in 2022. Boston had two (one was in his 40s). Best AL clubs in Runs Allowed per Game for 2022: Astros, Yanks, Rays, M's, Guards -- all playoff teams. The Red Sox were second-worst to KC.
  3. Would this be acceptable? Red Sox '23 OF: Haniger-Kiermaier-Verdugo; with Kike at short (really don't want to see Story there, for several reasons...)
  4. He's a proven winner in Boston, a guy who consistently beats the Yankees, and who still wants to be a Red Sox. All those are factors that matter, that none of the other free agent pitchers possess. If Eovaldi re-signs, I will give credit to Bloom and Co.
  5. Of course this is my entire point about investing in Devers -- and not Judge -- going forward.
  6. I'm starting to temper my offseason expectations -- which admittedly have conflicted with every winter of the Bloom Era compared to the early free-spending (can we say more desperate) days of the Epstein Era. Maybe shooting for third place and a shot at a wild card run isn't such a bad strategy. The team will have to be "way better" to make the postseason. I'm just skeptical about the new balanced schedule; sure, the Sox won't have to play so many AL East games, but neither will NY, Tor, Tampa and Balt -- who all could still finish ahead of an 87-win Phillies' type contender. Other clubs may be thinking the same -- all the big signings so far have been relievers, and we know bullpens now rule the postseason. The Red Sox may be stockpiling a rotation of #3 starters to get them through the regular season -- and yes, to keep costs down -- with an eye toward finding/developing/preserving power arm bullpen match-ups for later on...
  7. You got me. Judge just had a career year and his career batting average is now .284, one entire point better than Devers' career .283. As for predictions, you got me again. The only thing you know for sure is that you never know. And that one player is now in his 30s, while the other is in his 20s. We can try to base opinions on facts. In the past four seasons, Judge has 211 extra base hits. Devers has 264 -- the most in the majors.
  8. You should be scared -- as most of us are... but not because of Nate. The last place Red Sox starting rotation is a sham in shambles. Eovaldi may not ever be healthy through an entire season again, but right now he is a better bet to pitch and pitch well for 2023 than two young guys who just had surgery and two old guys who are always hurt. He's also younger than deGrom, Bassitt, Kershaw and Verlander. This morning I read reports that Boston is looking to add another starter, but only "a #2 or #3" guy. Why are the Sox unwilling to pay for a #1 like Rodon? We know it's not because they can't afford it. Is it because there are just too many other holes to fill on the roster? Can a staff of #3 starters lift you to third place? If you're a cellar-dweller vowing to be way better, isn't third place way better?
  9. That's where I'm at. He's only led all of baseball in extra base hits since he became a full-timer four years ago -- and it's not even close. He's 26.
  10. I can be serious if I expect Judge to be damaged goods for about half of the next decade -- because he was half the time in the last half decade.
  11. I heard he had a trade lined up with Boston where Houston would acquire Schreiber for Altuve, Bregman, top catching prospect Yainer Diaz, and a minor league lefty pitcher named Dombrowski. BTV approved this deal, so I don't what Crane's problem was...
  12. It's not my criteria at all -- I'm just trying to think of the masses and how the front office always does its best to deflect from admitting the truth. I want what's best for the team, too... but I'm positive trading another homegrown star and getting another average MLB outfielder, an infielder who can't hit minor league pitching, and a back-up catcher in return will not cut it this winter. Here's an idea: since any team interested in Devers will want him longterm and proceed with such intention, then the Sox demand should be for much more than "one year."
  13. Mookie is one of those people. In an interview I heard him say he just wanted what was fair.
  14. If fans were fairly high they wouldn't be so miserable, but I disagree with your definition. Most miserable pricks don't want everything their way; the misery comes from the perception of not getting anything their way... I just want a good pretzel. But no packet mustard.
  15. I'd hate to see the Sox lose Devers because they signed anyone else for $22M right now. And that includes Judge, who is not the overall hitter Devers is or will become, and who I seriously doubt will be as productive in the next decade...
  16. But agents will insist that Anthony Rendon is a fair third baseman.
  17. A trade would presumably yield a better return than a comp pick, but it would also signal to Red Sox Nation that the team was giving up on resigning hometown hero Raffy Devers. If they keep him for one more year and let him walk, at least they could pretend they were trying to sign him up until the bitter end. Which scenario looks better to the public: pushing him out the door a year early, or him walking through it on his own?
  18. MLB Channel panel called out the Red Sox for "not acting like a big market team." Yonder Alonzo did a thorough segment on why the Sox should lock up Devers. Dan Plesac made a great case for overpaying to keep Bogaerts. MLB extra base hits, 2019-2022: 1. Devers 264, 2. Semien 248, 3. Ramirez 244, 4. Alonso 241, 5. Freeman 239 MLB shortstop WAR 2018-2022: 1. Bogaerts 23.4, 2. Turner 22.9, 3. Lindor 21.8, 4. Correa 21.1, 5. Anderson 16.3
  19. Nimmo had a good year, but did you know that Average Alex Verdugo had more hits, doubles, RBIs and a higher BA? Doogie is also three years younger, but does anyone think he's worthy of a $20 mil AAV? Or is Nimmo just lucky this winter he's the best outfielder money can buy not named Judge?
  20. Trading Devers this winter would be the worst possible scenario for Boston and Red Sox fans. It would show -- yet again -- that the Sox are unwilling to pay fair market value to their homegrown stars, the faces of the franchise. It would also send the same message to all up-and-coming prospects, and to future free agents. And to teammates in the clubhouse, dugouts and bullpens, it would confirm that management is unwilling to use its resources to provide them with the best possible support towards achieving the ultimate goal of a professional sports team: winning.
  21. And Story.
  22. I'm ready for Devers' payday to get gross. Losing all the Red Sox top homegrown faces would really rot.
  23. Every season the Yankee fans I know target one hated scapegoat they can blame for not winning it all that they want dumped off their team. Gallo was this year's winner by far. They'd love one more reason to make fun of Boston.
  24. I have to put this out there on the world wide web, at least for my own sanity: All-or-nothing Gallo will really move the needle for Sox fans... to empty.
  25. Maybe it's the weak free agent class, but I just don't see Nimmo as an elite outfielder worthy of a superstar salary... $24M per? Is he really worth two Benintendis or two-and-a-half Kikes? I'm all about guys getting fair market value, but if someone is willing to pay Nimmo that much, I don't think it will be Bloom. Not when someone like Rodon can maybe be had for that kind of contract. The Nimmo value makes taking a shot at Conforto even more palatable.
