  1. Yup, right now Bloom has failed to even add an average pitcher in a big league starting rotation for about the going AAV rate of between $11 to $13 million. I would say that's irksome, but on forums like this, it's irkmany.
  2. RF is Verdugo full-time. I've not seen nor heard anyone in Boston indicate that Refsnyder will platoon; in fact, Cora predicted Verdugo will hit .300 in '23. SS -- using Story with his obvious health concerns, and picking up another utility piece like Profar would be low-budget; both Andrus and Segura each made about twice as much last year. SP -- they might be done, but relying on four rehabbing starters coming off surgeries reeks of punting. Surprised Bloom or another GM wasn't aggressive on Wacha, unless they think '22 was a mirage. Not surprised Eovaldi won't be back, after his outspoken reaction at the last trade deadline. Our final signing will be half-of-Hill; it's too easy not to get done.
  3. It's all about placeholders on a rebuilding team eying the future. Even Story, if he indeed plays SS, is a placeholder... hopefully, he's forced to move back to second by Mayer sooner rather than later. The Red Sox have a lot of other prospects that may develop into big leaguers in the next year or three. If the youngsters don't fulfill their promise -- and hype -- then hopefully, Bloom and even Henry and LeBron are placeholders.
  4. Bloom, the media, and even fans can pretend that Turner was acquired to DH and back-up Casas, but come on. Does anyone really think it's a coincidence that his main position is third base?
  5. Yes, you do. The Sox are merely showing us they learned in '22 that it's not a good idea to play MLB games without big leaguers at every position on the diamond. Turner is a third baseman, and the hot corner had the potential to be another glaring hole on the field soon in Fenway. If Raffy is dealt before Opening Day, at least we won't have to see and hear and grieve over Franchy or Duran or Yoshida trying to learn a new position.
  6. Start the freaking clock! Who cares about five years down the road, when they're all going to be either locked up on modern moderate salaries or dealt because they turned into really good players who will be too expensive for Boston Market to keep.
  7. The only MLB players with years of control that might headline a trade package include Houck, Pivetta and Verdugo. Story already makes too much. But we all know the biggest candidate is Raffy.
  8. Like other fan favorites, Raffy will soon be a prior ity.
  9. If we were fans of a team that was going to add 8-9 viable big leaguers this winter, we'd maybe advocate for Andrus for SS and Drury for back-up 1B/DH (28 HRs with a deadball)... not to mention two of Eovaldi, Kluber or Wacha for the rotation... but if the market for mid-level starting pitchers is too high for Boston's frozen asshats, then add more relievers like Rogers and Chafin. Brantley's market price for a legit bat will be prohibitive, but a Conforto flier is appealing to a rebuilding team. Turner's swing is made for Fenway if a third base replacement is needed when Devers is dealt.
  10. Fun fact: Michael Nesmith's mother invented White-Out. Unfun: Chaim Bloom's mother's son filled a super-soaker with it and is almost done spraying the entire roster of 2018 champions.
  11. I never said I thought Bloom should've signed Benintendi instead of Yoshida. But MLB teams thought both were worth at least $15M AAV. Just like the market price for average starting pitchers is now about $13M AAV (Manaea, Anderson, Stripling, etc.). The Red Sox, who lost three big league starters, have just chosen not to sign any this offseason... They did try to get versatile swingman Zac Eflin, who was so versatile, he swung to Florida. However, that experience left them so sour on starting pitchers that they intentionally let three get picked in the Rule 5 Draft, and have refocused on DFAed relievers.
  12. A legitimate franchise should always be looking to add and upgrade pitching. The Yankees, love them or hate them -- and no matter where they are in the standings -- have actually been "in" on starting pitchers seemingly every year since the beginning of free agency, nearly 50 years ago.
  13. I've been hitting it harder these past three winters, and not just in pandemic isolation. Bloom's loading all my baseball card binders onto the lifeboats, but he keeps surrounding me with new boxes of old commons. Hopefully, the keg won't run dry before we reach the depths of Davey Jones' locker. Or Mickey Dolenz'...
  14. Andrus is the most logical -- which is why we'll probably never see him in a Red Sox uniform.
  15. Add both for #2 or one plus Wacha... and of course, half of Hill, who will be ready to step in when someone else inevitably crumbles and has to be shut down for the rest of the year.
  16. If there is fear of elbow inflammation, then he shouldn't play shortstop, period... because any hit in the hole that he reaches will risk injury if he throws -- or injury to the club if he doesn't.
  17. Market prices. Benintendi, 28, is a starting outfielder in his prime who has been an All-Star, hit .300 and won a Gold Glove in the big leagues. He just signed for less than a guy from Japan who has yet to play a game in the majors.
  18. I still have not read here or heard elsewhere how range can make up for a lack of arm strength at shortstop. What good is range deep in the hole if an infielder can't reach first base in time to consistently nail the baserunner?
  19. I figured out what Bloom means when he says Story's great range will compensate for a weak arm at shortstop. Story's speed will allow him to catch pop flies and humpback liners in left field that Yoshida can't reach. That will keep tons of baserunners from scoring who beat out routine grounders to short. And Story will bring a new meaning to relays. Any time there's a play at the plate, Story will flash across the diamond to the nearest infielder -- Raffy or Arroyo -- and hand off the ball to someone who can actually throw to home in the air.
  20. Tiant in '71 and Wakefield in '95 were signed by Boston after being cut by other clubs... I don't know why fans get so down on Bloom for dumpster diving; the Sox found two aces that way in the last 50 years!
  21. The best year for free agent starter was 1992, when Greg Maddux, 26, won the Cy Young for the Cubs. Maddux signed with Atlanta and won the next three Cys in a row. That worked out ok.
  22. (loathing the idea that a team isn't yet to good enough to try to be good enough) Kids at the beach trying to body-surf, bouncing up and down in the water, looking over their shoulders as the waves build up, waiting... waiting... "Not this one, the next one -- no, the one after -- no, the next one --- nooooooooo...." Waves crash, bodies topple, mouths fill with salt water, sand in the swimsuits...
  23. Caution: he said Raffy is now their #1 Priority. What if Devers is their priority, but the Sox just aren't that motivated. Like, they're hungry, but not for a sit-down meal. If it's just a quick snack -- do they want to pay for red grapes or a bag of chips?
  24. Why Kluber over Wacha? Kluber had 0.7 WAR last year; Wacha led the Sox staff at 3.3. In '23, Kluber will be 37, Wacha 31.
  25. I can't even define that right now... high risk that we'd have to pay an entire contract that a player actually completes in Boston? high risk that we'd have to pay half the contract for the player to play for another team? high risk that the guy will melt down from constant media and fan attention, and escape New England in the wee hours of the night on a flight to neutral Switzerland?
