  1. Kluber is cooked. All the quotes about getting ripped by the last-place Cardinals were because he was mislocating his "fastball". He doesn't have the stuff anymore to blow it past big league hitters, so he has to be perfect on the perimeters just to survive every game. It's not happening. The Red Sox and Bloom need to admit mistake signings -- like they did with Richards and Diekman -- and move on. Put the best five starters in the rotation -- not the five who have the least amount of "options" remaining. Here's an option: stop pretending to contend, and expedite the future by giving younger starters regular turns in the rotation, where they can develop their legitimate stuff. It's easier for fans to watch the youthful promise of hope than fading figures of mope.
  2. The right guy to pick on is the one in charge who can't seem to supply a club that's "all-in absolutely" (according to the team president) with an actual MLB shortstop. Chang was the closet thing; he got hurt -- it happens -- so replace him. My post wasn't a reflection on one game and questionable pitching decisions. It's all about fielding a team with big leaguers who legitimately play the positions they're assigned. If the defense -- and shortstop specifically -- doesn't improve, then there will be plenty more deflating defeats marred by inconsistency.
  3. The irony is that the bullpen (as all pens inevitably do) finally blew some games when we finally got some really good starts on back-to-back days. But it's no laughing matter that a team willing to pinch hit at the end of the game for its starting shortstop doesn't have an actual good-fielding shortstop to replace him to protect late-inning leads. Hernandez (do you think his fans would like him as much if he didn't have a pet nickname and just went by Enrique) had the worst batting average in the starting line-up, and was pinch-hit for. That makes sense (along with the L-R splits). But he also leads the league in errors... so wouldn't it be at least as logical to carry and insert a real shortstop with a good glove?
  4. Houck and Whitlock said on NESN that Ort is good at grilling.
  5. I agree with this... unless Jansen's isn't 100 percent (which they'll prob never admit to, but then again, most ballplayers compete with assorted aches and pains). What I'll never agree with is just riding out the season -- pretending to contend -- without an authentic reliable defensive shortstop. The Sox just signed Pablo Reyes and put him at second base, but he's played every position in the majors except 1B and C (gotta love that versatility). Reyes was acquired from the Oakland, where he couldn't make the A's, the team with the worst record in baseball.
  6. Sox are 1/2 game out of last place. Teams like that invest in better futures by sticking with guys who show promise... like Casas, Bello, Duran, Valdez, Wong... even Devers and Verdugo (just entering their primes).
  7. It's never early for the good teams, just those underperforming. It's baseball season. The Padres' third-best starter is Wacha, with a 4.82 ERA. Every Red Sox starter is over 5....
  8. Been over this a bunch since 2019, but bottom line is that Mookie wanted -- and deserved -- a top of the market salary. At his age and position, he had historic WAR; he and his agents knew it, but Boston chose not to pay for it. It wasn't the first or last time the Red Sox front office misread the current market... As for wanting to leave Boston -- for those wondering about attendance the past month (and who don't live in the Northeast)... did you see on NESN what fans wore to Fenway? Down jackets, wool caps, gloves and blankets OR plastic garbage bags -- some with Sox logos so they charge you another $20 bucks to sit in cramped, obstructed seats.
  9. ... especially when most of us are too old to bother to look up the definition of the label. Wanda fans will just assume it has to do with posters possessed by a hex... though we're thankful Doctor Strange is powerful enough to cast a spell to protect us all from the prehistoric thesaurus.
  10. Fitzy does have the swag. But Bobby D. has "Soul Kitchen"...
  11. ... or that the Dodgers wanted David Price so badly they gave up a top position prospect. But even if Verdugo becomes an All-Star, you'll never see me refer to his predecessor in RF as Who? (bbref) Average HOF RF vs. Mookie Betts: 42.4 7yr-peak WAR | 56.7 JAWS | 5.1 WAR/162 50.4 7yr-peak WAR 53.8 JAWS 8.1 WAR/162 That's who.
  12. That's not crazy, just a little unwell.
  13. Bogaerts: 1.2 WAR, 6 HRs, .808 We traded for Mondesi: bupkis
  14. Whoever fixed Duran should be promoted or given a big raise. If it was his father, then that guy should be signed to a longterm contract, before Tampa recruits him.
  15. Verducci noted batters were hitting Bello's slider. But when the guy controls a 98 four-seamer, 97 sinker and a change-up... what would Alfred E. Newman say?
  16. So Valdez ph by Dalbec ph by Devers... who plays second the rest of the game? Turner, with Devers to third?
  17. The problem with counting on the IL Red Sox to return and contribute at their past levels are that Story, Duvall and Mondesi are all out with injuries that will most likely have severe affects on their strengths -- or in Story's case, the shortstop position he was supposed to play at an elite level. Story's throwing elbow, Mondesi's knee, Duvall's wrist... Does it really make sense to expect Story to return to a spot he hasn't played in two years and gun people out from deep in the hole? Does it make any sense to think Mondesi will be as fast, even after healing from blowing out his knee, because of inevitable scar tissue? Will Duvall really be back at his full power-swinging strength, a few months after traumatizing half the arms that whip the bat?
  18. No matter where one stands in the x-times-through-the-order debate -- if recent past means anything -- Cora sure doesn't seem like he wants to yank his starters and exhaust his relievers. Remember, there were a few times last year when a guy was really dealing and AC let his starter go the distance. Instead of being totally beholden to the analytics department (like in meccas of innovation like LA and Tampa), isn't it just as likely Cora pulls the hook more times than not because he knows his starters are gassed or just can't be trusted? Every game, the coaching staff and catchers are in constant communication about nuances of stuff and location that always supersede voices in the booth or in my recliner.
  19. Lakers are big fat trout. Some guy in Colorado caught one this week weighing over 73 pounds (her belly was full of eggs, so he released her... doubt a hoop tank top would even fit).
  20. I think the biggest risk of injury/burn-out is with #3. The multi-inning reliever who throws every couple-three days is a relatively new creation. Tendons and ligaments (and hammys etc) have to adjust to a different workload then they're used to since maybe Little League...
  21. The state of the rotation directly affects the state of the bullpen. Starters have to go longer and deeper or Cora's go-to guys will be toast by the trade deadline. We've seen it too many times, and it's a peril that never seems to go away.
  22. Imagine the city connect uniform ensembles if they were the Face Cards...
  23. Was thinking same; Verducci just wrote an article how the Sox can't possibly stay this hot with their current starting pitching. His point is no one is very good (didn't even mention Pivetta), and only Sale has shown the stuff of someone who might be...
  24. Las Vegas Dupes? Marks? Johns? Suckers? Paupers? Indigents? Just don't call them Poor Boys or Beggars... or horrors, the Card Counters (the entire roster could end up on the IL). Chumps... that's it -- Chumpions! Headline: "Chumps Win Chumpionship!"
  25. Actually, I was envisioning Walter and his funky delivery helping the big club pen by mid-season -- but he's kind of regressed so far. Wonder if Matt Strahm is available? His team is underachieving... bet we could acquire him for a Song.
