  1. Doesn't the "still early" mantra seem more appropriate when waiting for a team of good players to find its groove, shake off some rust and heat up with the weather? And with an organization that fans can have faith in to make legitimate moves to fortify the roster? Are fans in other AL East cities saying it's still early, because they know who's coming to their town? Ringling Brothers Breslow and Bailey Circus -- sold out -- by Boston's front office
  2. I would, if I worked in the front office of the Red Sox during the first 15 years or so of John Henry's ownership... back then we could be sure if we traded for an ace, that the next immediate move would be to lock him up with a fair-market extension.
  3. Marcelo Mayer? What are you suggesting -- ruin the rest of the life of a callow young man who plays a kid's game for money?
  4. Sucks seeing Burnes pitching for Baltimore, since he was the guy a lot of posters felt was a perfect target to pursue for the Red Sox' rotation, now and going forward. And it also sucks that a division rival got an ace for only their #6 and #7 prospects -- not that the Sox were ever getting Corbin Burnes for Nick Yorke and Walkemin Gonzalez... just remember, the Orioles tanked for a few more years to secure all those top 10 draft picks. Also re. the mighty third-place O's, interesting to note their offense is tied with Boston with a league-average .234 BA, with about the same Slug%, but below the Sox in OBP. Here's the big difference: Baltimore has struckout an MLB-low 72 times, compared to 113 for Boston. And in 10 games so far, the Orioles have hit into ONE double play...
  5. I'm not buying the Red Sox defense suddenly sucks as a team at all other positions because they lost their best glove at shortstop. I'm not buying that the Red Sox defense still sucks because their manager can't wave a magic wand and force professionals to be better at catching and throwing. I'm not buying tickets, hot dogs, beer and t-shirts at Fenway Park this year -- because Breslow's not buying major league talent -- because Henry's not buying major league talent. The Red Sox get what I'm not paying for.
  6. O'Brien, AFTER Ball Four is thrown: "He's gonna walk him." No, Dave -- he DID walk him.
  7. NESN booth bleating on all game long about how much difference on the entire D the calming presence of Story made. It's almost as if they were given the assignment from the front office of blaming Story's bad luck on any errors that happen on the whole field -- dropped fly balls, dropped relays, ricochets off the third baseman, grounders through the wickets, batters swinging at sliders eight feet off the plate (well... maybe seven).
  8. Remember, it's still early. In the night. Shadows creep across the infield. Like a curtain on the season.
  9. He did, but it looked like Mondesi, and went right through his arms. All that was left was green ectoplasm.
  10. The next time an elbow injury to a major league pitcher is minor... ... well, I'll still be an oxymoron.
  11. Who will be booed? Not another player befell with injury. There's only the owners and front office who wouldn't/couldn't spend on actual talent to upgrade and deepen the rotation... but that's nothing new -- and certainly not something anyone needed more to boo about.
  12. Kinda my point about Ceddanne -- he's a big leaguer. And he leads the Sox in triples (twice as many as Mookie!).
  13. Worst Red Sox K-rates: Dalbec 66.7%, Hamilton 40%, Abreu 38.9%, Pablo 35.3%, Wong 33.3%, Valdez 31.4%, Reese 30.8%, Casas 27.9%, Story 26.5%... Ceddanne 25.7%. If this is his floor, at least it's in the kitchen, and not the basement where those other guys are having a card game.
  14. Send all metrics to Red Sox, care of Analytics, 1313 Mockingplan Lane, Boston, Mass.; "Attention: Accounts Payable Dept -- stop disbursements immediately"
  15. Rafaela adjusted to pitching at every level and was an all-around star in the minors; if those aren't the kinds of players teams should invest in longterm, then who is? The next steps may be to extend pitchers like Houck and Crawford. Then don't surprised, if one of the Big Three in Portland really rakes this summer, if the Sox even give someone the Jackson Chourio treatment (locking up a guy before he even makes the bigs). It's all part of the plan, which really isn't a new 5-year plan, since Bloom extended Whitlock after his Rule V season in 2021. Maybe Slaten will be next?
  16. Molecular biophysics vs. the Illiad. Which one would most humans use to replace "rocket science" when blurting metaphors on difficult subjects they know nothing about? (Chaim says, "Don't sleep on Homer; 5Gs couldn't even finish The Canterbury Tales in college, because every other page was footnote translations")
  17. The Red Sox won't admit it, but this is kind of their way to admit they've learned their lessons. Back in the day, Boston chose to use up all the minimum wage service time on its young players, while splurging big money on top free agent talent. Now it looks like the Sox will be working in reverse... except the plan might just be to lock up youth at a discount, and haha -- never spend big on anyone ever again.
  18. I'm with Max here re. shortstop. Don't mess with the improved outfield, or weaken other positions. Find a defensive specialist for SS, but not another utility Pablo -- someone instead with a consistent, above-average glove and arm. They're out there, and not break-the-bank expensive. Shake the baseball tree, Brez...
  19. Don't worry, Bailey is working on more strikeout pitches right now. Just push the moon in front of the sun and batters won't even make contact.
  20. Hey - Sox are #10 in USA Today's Power Rankings... the only losers ahead of 7-3 Boston are Philly and Arizona (they're still "better" because they were last year -- yup, that makes sense). When Boss Steinbrenner was still kicking, it was ok every preseason to predict the Yankees to win it all, because you knew he'd make impactful acquisitions every summer, depending on need.
  21. Ya, we already know that ain't happening in Leantown. If the new lights-out pitching holds up, there's a better chance of an extension for Bailey than Cora; coaches cost a lot less than managers.
  22. Probably, but if they just vote on the most current facts -- who won, who lost this week -- that makes more sense than basing it on what happened four months ago or what might happen in the next month. If they're not going to base it on actual results, why even keep score? Just pick the teams with the biggest, strongest players -- those always look good on paper (or on screen).
  23. The 7-3 Red Sox are 16th in today's MLB Power Rankings. The 5-4 Orioles are 5th -- even though they got walked off the last two games by 8-2 Pittsburgh, now 11th. Baltimore's OBP is 29th, ahead of only the White Sox... but their MLB "power" is somehow justified by citing Triple A stats of their shortstop prospect, still in the minors. Meanwhile, Boston already promoted its Triple A shortstop, David Hamilton -- and he homered in his first at bat. Isn't that actual power? Other teams deemed better than the .700 Red Sox have losing records, like Philly #6th (really?), Astros 8th, D-backs 13th, and Blow Jays 14th. All four losers were playoff teams last season, but isn't this list based on this year? If strength of schedule means that much, then how did the Yankees jump up to #3 by beating up last-place Toronto this weekend? Huh? The 6-3 Tigers are #7, after just losing two in a row to the mighty A's... WHAT?
  24. Come on, man -- by now, you know they're all the best players available... They can play anywhere. We might even be able to convert a few of them to... shortstop!
  25. Since you asked: Nick Ahmed career dWAR: 12.6... Pablo Reyes career dWAR: NEGATIVE 0.6 (does a negative -- by definition of WAR -- mean Losses Below Replacement player?) I don't know if Mayer gets a cup of coffee, but I do know many freshmen who made varsity -- based entirely on skill. Back in the day, rumor has it Jim Rice played high school varsity when he was in 8th grade...
