  1. Conor Wong carrying a bat is actually 2 mistakes wrapped into one guy.
  2. One question for the Red Sox organization is whether there has been any measurable improvement with these guys over the past 2 years and now 2024 ST ? If so, it is not evident in a meaningful way. Dalbec is the prime example and look how long hung around, and still would be the call-up if Casas had a booboo. I hope Breslow can figure out if his Minor league managers and coaches can teach fundamentals.
  3. Hamilton and Valdez will go down as a DP combo for the ages. The season that started with a buzz from a 7-3 road trip has turned quickly into a burp contest .
  4. As Moon says, it's not just the actual scored errors, it's the plays not made . Did no one see that the O's runner had a clear sailing to 3rd ? Also I think Winckowski has a 2 out pitching problem
  5. Still only the first 1/3rd of April and 3 key members of the Sox, Giolito, Story, and Pivetta all potentially lost for the full season. Then there is Vaughn Grissom, a key addition to play 2B. He will be back on the field, but it will be pushing towards May before that happens. This team need a relatively injury free 2024 but has already been decimated with key losses. The ship has sailed on the FA side to increase depth across the board. But we do have an $18 million dollar DH showing little power and poor OBP tendencies.
  6. What is the typical ratio of balls hit to the SS range of coverage vs difficult balls hit to CF'er. Something tells me the team and pitchers are better served with the best player available at SS, not CF. If the pitchers were any good, and ours are, they would not allow balls hit into the triangle during this homestand, while Rafaela gets 4 or 5 assists at SS .
  7. Alex Speier's quote from Cora is telling : bad pitching,..defense,....hitting,....baserunning,....lack of atmosphere (????) . Follow up question: "AC, who is the manager of this team that should getting results in all those categories ? " If you want atmosphere just walk the concourse from 1B area to 3B and you'll smell plenty of atmosphere.
  8. Just check the OBP's of the Tater Tots batting ahead of O'Neill for an indicator of the value of a tater
  9. The Angels might be a great place to offload Masataka Yoshida . I hear there is a Japanese interpreter looking for work in the LA area . You can bet on it.
  10. It will be interesting to see how Tuesday and the series with the Orioles (5-4) goes, then the Angels come back again. If we are lucky, we will miss Detmers slot in the Angel's rotation. A 7-3 record ( all 3 losses by 1 run !!) on a West Coast extended road trip is a very good start . The guys have not been truly home since mid-February or longer. If we are still within 1 or 2 of AL East leader by end of next Sunday, there may be some real positives for this team, despite the nutshot of losing Story. A seemingly mediocre roster with little star-power suddenly could be exciting again. But, it's still early , only 6.17% of the season gone. Wait until we hit 10% to make rash projections of playoffs.
  11. 29 GMs and analytic staffs do not think so, or Bobby D would be wearing other colors. The surprise may be that in all his time over the past 2 years he has not improved . He is wearing corrective lenses at bat , but likely cannot see the ball well.
  12. You know deep down that if any MLB team had the thought that Dalbec could contribute at MLB level, he would have been gone in Spring'23 or '24. He just doesn't bring enough skills to be effective. It says something about Sox MiLB depth that he is still on board.
  13. Last year, the Japanese contingent at Angel's games was very noticeable. Last night, literally none
  14. Duran starting to look more like a LF'er, especially working half the season in Fenway. It helps with his lack of power arm . Almost misjudges that last shot from Sano but made a great diving catch last night. He's been a bright spot on offense too.
  15. Enjoyed watching Reese McGuire's 3 run HR alsmot as much as watching him do what was necessary to score Rafaela from 3rd with a simple ground out. Professional AB , not trying to overrreach . Shouldn't need the run , up 8-0 but maybe the younger guys could learn something by that AB
  16. You're onto something Max. When you look at Friday's 9-0 win and today's 7-0 lead, all with bombs away HRs, you look at that loss last night and how it occured and wonder how it can be the same team. That's baseball where most all teams will lose at least 60 games.
  17. Here's one that must drive managers and coaches mad. Houck is putting up a very good game with a shoutout through 5 2/3rds, decent pitch count. He has 2 outs no one on and a .148 hitter up. Just need the last out and have a pretty secure W in the book, plus a real successful West Coast trip. So , Trevor goes 3-0, throws ball 4, but the ump gave him the cripple, then walks the guy anyway. In the picture of the overall game, pretty much a nothing. But I know most any MLB pitcher can throw a strike if they need to, just watch most 3-0 counts. Houck should have just filled up the zone and let Drury swing away. Small point but irritating to see from a good pitcher.
  18. Once the Sox get a definitive diagnosis and medical prognostication on Story, assuming it is bad news 60++ IL, I will be anxious to see if Breslow can find and acquire a veteran utility infielder with just average skills. There is nothing evident that the Sox can go very far with Valdez, Hamilton and Reyes with a Grissom sighting maybe happening, oh, sometime this century. Need to make a move , Brez. The budget should not be an issue.
  19. McGuire says enough of that Solo HR crap. This is a 3 run johnson
  20. After 2 starts each ( Houck after 5 today) , Whitlock has completed the fewest innings 9.1 to Bello's 10.0, but other wise Bello is the statistically worst stat-man in all categories among these 5 guys. The BP as a group , subject to today's game finishing well, have been very good to excellent. Even Joely shows promise .
  21. You're correct about the shoulder, it is what sits on his shoulders that occasionally drifts away
  22. Valdez could up his game a bit by letting some pitches just hit him. HP umpire called him out on a pitch clearly outside. He also needs to work on his positioning for throw downs on steal attempts. He is too far in front of the bag , shorts the throw and needs a big sweep tag. Trout's wide slide indicate he saw a path away from Valdez.
  23. The Red Sox analytics staff is feverishly working on this formula to boost run production: OBP
  24. That hit off Detmers propelled rising star Jarren Duran into a tie with Enmanuel Vazquez for Sox team lead in RBI's with 5 . O'Neill with 4 HRs only has the 4 RBIs from scoring himself.
  25. I can't even comment on the streak-busting shitshow I saw at Angels Stadium last night. It featured all that is exciting about this team; 14K's, 3 hits , egregious defense on the left side, many many 3-2 counts followed by 5 foul offs leading to Whitlock's departure in the 5th. Not a shutdown pitch in Whitlock's repertoire. 3 missed calls at 2B by bumpire , although each call benefitted the Sox until 2 were overturned. A streak ending loss where the opponent scored on terrible defense by Devers and Reyes . 6 walks , including 2 to a guy( Shanuel) hitting .091 and 2 to Moniak hitting exactly .000 so far. On the other hand, overall the BP kept the Sox in position to win and Duran got the 1 RBI, plus a great catch in left to save runs. Detmers schooled Casas and Reyes , both of whom were clueless.
