  1. Yes, I did say I still think this is one of the leagues best offenses. But when the Sox come back down to earth (and still have a really really really good offense) the pitching will be exposed. Of course, that might somewhat be apparent now.
  2. I agree, BABIP can be a skill to an extent. If you are hitting more line drives and making harder contact you will have a higher BABIP. Some players always have BABIP above .300. I tend to put more weight into BABIP in terms to a players own large sample size. Still....I expect some type of regression.
  3. BABIP Travis Shaw .398 Hanley Ramirez .396 Jackie Bradley Jr. .390 Xander Bogaerts .389 ....sorry. P.S. I still think this is going to be one of the best offenses all year, and I still think all those guys will be good. But a regression is coming.
  4. Joshua Ockimey is a guy I've had my eye on and he was my sleeper candidate over the winter as well. The K rate would normally concern me but 23% isn't really all that concerning when it's matched with a high average, power, and a walk rate that is almost comparable 20%. Still given his age and the fact that this is his first taste of success I could see the Sox keeping him in Greenville all year but I don't think they will. He's probably a guy that could move up at the end of the year. Perhaps sooner, I could see him getting promoted to Salem when Longhi goes up to Portland if he keeps raking as well.
  5. I agree, there is a certain point where a guy has nothing to learn and keeping him at the level is a waste. However I do think it can be hard to determine exactly when a guy has crossed that line by scouting a box score because there are so many other things to consider but it was hard to see why it wasn't Benintendis time. I think Moncada goes in a month or two, and Dubon I can see getting a month in Portland at the end of the year if he keeps it up too. I wish he could put on some muscle and develop a little power. Power isn't everything and sometimes over rated but you don't have to hit home runs even just a little gap power and doubles power can go a long way.
  6. If the Sox need a LFer earlier than later I could see a depth trade or a call up of Swihart/Castillo depending on how they look with the bat or in the field (both have looked good lately). I'd say the earliest we see Benintendi is August and I'm curious to see how he handles the promotion. The high-A to AA jump is among the biggest in professional ball. My instincts tell me Benintendi has BEEN ready for the level but he could very well struggle for a while and still end up being a very good player and MLB ready by next year. If the cards fall right I think it's very probable we see him this year, but it could be September. I'm not 100% convinced he's here in August and here for a playoff push but I definitely see it as a possibility.
  7. I think Moncada will be promoted this year but I see less of a rush with him. Probably some time in early July to August for him. He's a full year younger than Benintendi, is currently blocked and still has things to work on. His swing from the left side of the plate is more advanced than his swing from the right side and I would say his K rate is still high but it's been coming down lately (at about 22% now). It wouldn't be unreasonable to promote even now however IMHO but I don't think there is as much a rush and I don't think the Sox will rush him either.
  8. And the s***** defense
  9. O'sullivan was good in a sense that he didn't give up 10 runs in one inning and get chased early. He was a victim of good circumstances, he was a filler and he filled but if this team is going to rely on this guy long term they are in trouble.
  10. Benintendi in Salem feels like a joke at this point, a promotion has to be imminent??? I could see Moncada being more of a mid season promotion or even mid summer but Benintendi clearly has nothing to learn at the level, I'd be very surprised if he spends one more week in Salem.
  11. I would obviously welcome a big bat in the lineup, but I personally would advocate against giving top dollar to a 34 or 36 year old free agent when pitching will be more of a long term need. Also, I think this team has a great young core that is making up this offense and I like to see money spent on extending one or two of them if we could.
  12. I think people need to put weight in defensive metrics, otherwise you're a dinosaur. Now don't get me wrong, scouting and the eye test are still and always will be relevant. But to really use the "eye test" I think you actually have to be at the games scouting the players, you can't scout defense very well from a tv screen.
  13. I was on that ship....even after getting burned by him in LF. Also, its rather common for MLB first baseman to not be 1B by trade.
  14. For what it would take to trade for Mike Trout, we could be left in several years asking what could we get back in return for Trout to rebuild our system. Great teams > great players all day...every day. Of course, if the Price is right...I just assume the price is wrong for a guy like Trout.
  15. Not to nit pick but his average is a tick above, his OBP is average and his SLG is a tick below. His OPS is a tick below. It's so close effectively he's average. But the average back up is well below average bringing those numbers down which is actually a tricky subject because the typical starting catcher doesn't play as much as the regular position player so it may be kind of hard to define what an average starting catchers playing time is so what do I know??? but I'd say Vasquez is a below average starting catcher offensively. I'm fine with that in this lineup and with his defense...and some of his hits have been during clutch times so I'm very happy with what he's done so far. And if he gives us more? then awesome!
  16. Alex Speier ‎@alexspeier Michael Chavis, out since April 23, will not need surgery for his left thumb ligament sprain. He's resumed baseball activities.
  17. This was my understanding as well. They weren't exactly trying to cover up or discretly do what apparently a lot of teams were doing to circumnavigate the rules. Why are they coming down on the Red Sox for this??? Did the MLB hire Rodger Goddell???
  18. Well I guess we will just have to agree to disagree....unless of course you disagree to that. On a personal note I've been pro Swihart for a long time, but I think I'm switching over to being pro Vasquez. I've always like both, but on this team with this offense I think it makes sense to go defense first at the catching position. If anything, regardless of how Swihart develops I think the Sox completely mishandled the situation this year. If anyone wants some good insight into the situation the Soxprospects had a podcast a week ago where the addressed this issue....and I think it's 100% spot on. If anyone has time today check out podcast #95 from about the 50:00 minute marker on they talk about Swihart. It's a good listen. http://hwcdn.libsyn.com/p/1/7/4/1740859415895e49/2016-0502.mp3?c_id=11613562&expiration=1463071073&hwt=d797edf9a782cc1ba85401a261217ae0
  19. I agree even stats like WAR an OPS are far from perfect and flawed. I do think they are useful and by themselves are more useful than other stats if you HAD to just look at one. I think it's become the new "quick" reference that OPS used to be.
  20. From what I heard it was 2 ground ball doubles and a weak hit....more luck than anything. A real shame too because I'd love to have an outfield of Castillo/JBJ/Betts. Also as far as Dubon goes the guy has zero power and is OBPing more than he's slugging. That suggests a struggle at the MLB level. I actually like him and think he's got a good MLB future but I think he doesn't get a lot of hype because no one thinks he's a starter type. He's viewed more of as a bench type guy.
  21. So hitting .494 against LHP isn't "really struggles against LHP"??? I think you ultimately agree with me. Because in our debate on the other forum I did mention this was an option to be entertained in July, as in...3 months from now if this trend continues. I'm not advocating the switch now. But given his track record in the minors with how he's handled LHP so far this year one should at least be keeping their eye on the situation. Perhaps that was lost in transition and you think I'm suggest Holt should play 3B right now VS. LHP???
  22. I agree, but let me rephrase my original point. If you hit a double your OBP and your SLG % goes up. If you walk your SLG is unaffected. Obviously the weights are different as you said and when you combined them the end result is OPS weighs HR's 2B's and 3B's less than you 'd expect by cutting because every hit weighed in slugging is weighed equally in OBP and added back in. I'm not sure how I feel to be honest with you as I don't have a hard stance but i would entertain the ideal that SLG% is undervalued in OPS. Call it 45/55 maybe 40/60
  23. I'd say this game has gone perfect for the Boston Red Sox, nice to see the offense get it's licks in.
  24. I thought it would be at least average, and I thought/hoped he could be even more than that. I gave JBJ a little bit more time than most because he was rushed in 2013 and jerked around for the next 2 years.
  25. Yes, but you miss my point. Shaw hasn't been hitting LHP...I used his minor league numbers to back up the fact that this is a long term trend. He didn't do it in the minors and he isn't doing it now either. Maybe he won't get platooned, maybe he shouldn't....but it doesn't change the fact that Shaw is a poor hitter vs. LHP.
