  1. I agree, but the market for relievers has been absolutely ridiculous the last few years at the deadline. Heck the Yankees practically built the leagues best farm system from dealing 2 top relievers. So if those are 2 of the three guys (depending on who the 3rd is) I'd say this is a pretty good deal for the Sox. (The two according to Mayo, not me)
  2. Jonathan Mayo ✔ @JonathanMayo Another @Redsox relief prospect, Jamie Callahan, is another apparently headed to @Mets for A. Reed. Red Sox top 30: http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2017/?list=bos … Jonathan Mayo ✔ @JonathanMayo It appears that reliever Gerson Bautista is one of the prospects heading from @RedSox to @Mets in A. Reed deal
  3. And just like that I'm hearing rumblings from sources on twitter that it's Jamie Callahan and Gerson Bautista.
  4. If this is true along with your last post I'd like to throw my hat in the ring and guess that Beeks/Shawaryn are the guys.....maybe some other lower level DSL guy putting up good number who we haven't heard of yet too.
  5. We keep hearing rumors about the Sox and Mets with regard to Reed but nothing about Bruce. A bullpen upgrade would be nice but an offensive upgrade is needed just as much. This almost feels like the offseason when the Sox made a bunch of moves but then got stingey when it came to 1B. That's hurting them now and they have an opportunity to fix that.
  6. I think Moncada has the higher ceiling, but I think Devers has the higher floor, and his ceiling is still really high. From a purely offensive perspective, I don't think Moncada is any better than Devers, it's his athleticism and speed that makes him a true 5 tool player potentially. But I think Devers might actually end up being the better hitter. He has a shot at being a perrenial 30 HR hitter with a high AVG/OBP/SLG line.
  7. I'm not sure I would call Vottos contract hideous as long as he's putting up seasons like he is this year. The back end might get pretty ugly, but he strikes me as the type of guy who can hit until he's 40. I base that on absolutely nothing.
  8. I'd take Devers over Beltre the next 6 years.
  9. Agreed, although I might be willing to include our better prospects if the players coming back came with a few years of control. Admittedly I'm less aware of who is on the trade market this summer of years past. Life hits ya sometimes, in a good way. But I actually have some faith in this offense coming together without any changes and being better than we are now. I think to some extent the offense is just slumping but another bat plus the addition of Devers could really put us over the top. Now, I hate one game sample sizes, but having one better option in the pen and one more good bat might have completely changed the outcome of a game like today. Kimbrel is fine, and the rest of the bullpen is ok but you always put yourself at risk when you have to rely on your pen for 12 outs. Reed fills a hole, as does Bruce.
  10. 20 years old and they're already pitching around him lol. This kid can play. His power to all fields is very impressive, and with a good plate approach at such a young age.
  11. I was thinking of him taking up Young's spot and DHing other days with Hanley at 1B. However, I think Bruce at 1B can work too, especially if the Sox think Hanley can't/won't play 1B full time due to his shoulder. And I'm not worried about the cost, I was the biggest proponent of building from within and holding onto prospects a year ago but that ship has sailed. Everyone has had the experience of being tied up at an intersection because someone starts to pull out and then stops. "Make your damn mind up"!!!!! We've put our eggs into the next 3-5 years basket, I'm not about to support pulling halfway out and stopping. If you're going to go go, we've made moves to win now so we should continue to make moves to capitalize on this window. This doesn't mean you make stupid trades, it just means you're not afraid to make moves that help your team.
  12. I might consider that package or something in between if the Mets included Bruce. I'd slide Hanley over to 1B and your lineup would look a lot better, especially with Devers hitting at 3rd.
  13. I certainly hope not. It seems like we're more interested in adding a bullpen arm. Not that I'm against that, but I hope we're looking at adding some bats under the radar as well.
  14. The Royals traded for Melky Cabrera and the top prospect who went in the deal was KC's #13 and the Sox still ate 5 million. We could have easily traded 2 B level prospects with Young to even out the money and upgraded our 4th outfielder and our offense against LHP. Melky could also play some DH and let Hanley play 11B if moreland continued to struggled. Everyteam in the division is getting better and DD is sitting around idle. I hope he has something in the works to improve this team.
  15. He's a weird profile, at first glance he's a 29-year-old who's played at AA or above for 7 seasons now but some of that was as a pitcher and then he converted back to hitting. But yes, interesting would be the word but I'm skeptical he will ever contribute at the MLB level. Who knows, maybe he can play 1B.
  16. Wed have to find a way to get him on the 40 man but a guy who is earning a chance right now is Jalen Beeks.
  17. I never looked forward to Price helping us in the playoffs but I thought he could help us get there. Don't lose sight of what this team needs.
  18. Yup....but then it begs the question of where does he play? possibly a move to the outfield? If Benintendi can't improve upon his at bats vs. LHP he could get some reps against lefties in LF. Maybe he can play some 1B? he might be kind of short for the position but he's not terribly short at 5'10" Maybe Hanley can take some more reps at 1B again and he can DH a little. If you can hit....these things tend to have a way of working themselves out.
  19. It's hard to have a lot of confidence in a 28 year old who has been stuck in AAA for 5 years. But it's hard to not be intrigued by seeing how much better he's done this year coupled with the fact he's mad adjustments to his mechanics. As you said he will be up in September, and he will get a few shots then. If he starts smashing the ball at this level things will get pretty interesting.
  20. Well I was going to suggest Bour, but he's out of the picture now. Could Alonso still be in play? The A's would probably want young pieces for Alonso that wouldn't involve taking anyone off the 25 man. $2 million isn't a lot to swallow and I'm not sure it puts us over the cap but it's small enough to be managable in some way. I'm feeling a little better with Devers up, but I think another bat could really put us over the top. This team is good, and it seems almost every game we lose is only by a run or two. The extra hitting will make the pitching shine that much better.
  21. Like I said I wouldn't be surprised but the more I think about it the more I think he finishes the season in Portland. IDK, call it 50/50 which is taking the easy way out. But as you said earlier, he's not exactly killing it in Portland. Still, an OPS above .800 after making a jump to a higher level is encouraging. Actually, I wouldn't be 100% surprised if he started next year in Portland either. Although in that scenario I think he would be one of those early season promotions who would move up a level after a month if he was absolutely destroying the baseball.
  22. Nunez and Devers make this team much better, without giving up anything. Anderson may be a bullpen arm one day and Santos is a teenager repeating the DSL. Those guys aren't likely part of your future and if they were they were more likely going to be complimentary pieces. Now if the Sox could upgrade 1B, I'd feel really really really really good about this team going forward.
  23. I agree, but I wouldn't be surprised if he got an end of season promotion. As in, he plays a week in Pawtucket.
  24. If only Carson Smith was a few months further along he could really solidly the pen. Or, he could struggle recovering from surgery. The range of outcomes seem wide.
  25. I don't disagree, but there will be other teams who can pitch come playoff time and we need to hit.
