    I think he'd have to come back and look pretty good for that to happen. I know there are those in the Sox organization who still think he has the highest ceiling of any pitcher in the Sox system and that was before the trade deadline. New guy on my radar who I'm curious to see a break out from is Martin Shelar, although that may not come until 2027. He has legit 80 raw power.

    We should also think about what most MLB caliber players do when they first enter the bigs. Many players, even all star caliber players struggle anywhere from a few weeks to a year or two until they really grow into the player they are. I don't believe we have the ability to tell how fast a guy is going to hit the ground running at the big league level by evaluating his box score, and I think we've seen this time and time again over the years. We should think about that too. Story is going to get first crack, whether or not people like that he is. If he comes back and is the player he was last year he very well may be just as good as Arias would be adjusting at the big league level. And if that is reality, then why wouldn't you take the extra year of control and play the guy you HAVE to pay. If it looks bad with Story you can always call up Arias. But if you call him up first the clock starts ticking.

    While that certainly may be part of the equation I believe it has to be far down the list of priorities.

    In the absence of his stuff ticking up I'd expect bad results at the MLB level.

    A lot more swing and miss and doesn't give up a ton of hits either. The stuff is good. Olds seems like the classic guy who is going to stick in the bigs if he can improve the control. he currently has a 0% BB percentage so........

    I always imagined that Ed O'Neills character in Modern family was sort of like a sequel to Married with Children where Al got away from his family and became rich successfull and had a second chance at life.

    "If everyone was healthy, we wouldn't have a depth issue!" Is that a serious argument? Sorry I couldn't help myself. But I think those stats better illustrate what was going on inside my mind the other day. Honestly, WHO gets injured is important. All teams sustain injuries through out the year, all teams have depth guys etc etc. But losing someone like Crochet is obviously very different than losing Zack Kelly. And losing someone like Conor Wong is obviously not the same blow as losing Contreras would be at this point. Not surprised the Sox are #1 Seems like the Sox have had worse luck than most teams with the injury bug for a few years now.

    Monasterio has been playing more SS than anything no? also he's been one of the worse defenders in the league, his range is non existent and his arm is weak. They'd actually probably be much better at defense with Story at SS. Of course with Story you just don't know what you're going to get. If we are getting 2022, or 2025 Trevor Story this team is much much better off. If not, I suspect we may see Arias sooner than later. I don't think the team believes in Monasterio as an everyday SS. I love what he's done for this team this year.

    For all the talk about the Sox not being able to take position players and transition them to the MLB level, they seemingly are great at it with pitchers; both inside and outside the organization. It's going to be interesting to see what Bailey can do with him when he is in the club house daily up in Boston.

    If teams played elite hitters at DH regardless of their defene then elite players like Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Bobby Witt Jr would be playing DH. That just feels bonkers to me to take those guys out of the field

    It might, but I wonder how long they will stick with Story. Arias may be an option at some point but no need to rush him and lose the service time or the PPI elegibility next year. If there's a lock out and he's been added to the 40 he doesn't get any development time next year, but the Sox do lose control so it makes sense to not rush him if Story can hold it down. I do wonder though, with how well Arias has been lighting it up if Arias gets the call. If Story is just laying eggs and looks absolutely awful I wonder if they just call up Arias and plug him in there.

    That's always the problem with sticking with someone for too long, no one wants to sell high. That be like me suggesting we trade Payton Tolle this offseason. I'd probably be crucified, but if he's laying eggs in two years everyone will be moaning about why he wasn't traded sooner. It's sad, I really like Duran. I hope he turns it around

    I'm sure the Red Sox paid extra to keep him away from the Bronx just like any team pays extra to get a guy over anyone else who is bidding for them. NY plays in the same division as BALT just like us, the Orioles weren't doing them any favors.

    Catcher might have been a better long term roster fit, but they needed a pitcher more this year. It also doens't help that Adley hasn't hit much but I think he will.

    It’s about as serious an argument as “omg I can’t believe we are trading Harrison because we need starters” back in March.

    Well that I agree with, I doubt anyone remembers but I was arguing with half the board about how one of our biggest needs at the deadline WAS starting pitching. if your argument was Breslow traded away all this prospect depth and didn’t get any starting pitchers I completely agree

    Yes, but I mentioned those guys because they will be back in the picture next year. Was Drohan going to start this year? Its' not a serious argument, it's what happened. Where did our depth go this year? we started the year with like.....ten starters. No one was complaining about depth then.

    I mean, I'm not thinking really hard about it either way. But you never know, there are guys left over from the 24-25 draft that could pop. I'm not placing bets on someone like Brady Tygart or Brandon Neely taking a leep forward. But we don't really need them too either. How is Oviedo/Houck/Crawford/Crochet going to look next year? you have 4 guys coming back who could all start and entire draft class we haven't seen yet, and he could conceivably make more moves.

    I'm not really sure I fully agree with this notion that we've traded away all our starting pitching depth. We've certainly traded away a lot of prospect depth but no one that would be helping the MLB team. What depth did we really trade away that would have pitched and contributed this year? The exception to this is Caleb Durbin for Kyle Harrison but I think we can all agree the offense was easily the biggest offseason concern and that showed for a long time this season. Durbin, has been better than Harrison, we won that trade. It appears to me that a lot of our "depth" has been sidelined by injury and not shipped out of town. Crochet/Crawford/Houck/Oviedo all would have helped out tremendously this year. How much better does the pitching look (which doesn't look bad) with Crochet at the top? Imagine if crochet was healthy in last years form and then we go Gray/Tolle/Saurez/Sandoval.

    If Early isn't playing again this year and he needs to be replaced, then doesn't Breslow technically have the offseason to replace him too? This pipeline of pitching that has paid huge dividends was literally built by him in just two years. I trust he's going to bring in some arms this offseason and we may see someone pop as well.

    Bello has been better because he's not starting. Obviously it's some kind of mental block, which perhaps is only cured by having him just start and work through it. I'd prefer to get him an opener and let him work through it in the offseason and 2027.

    That was exactly it. In terms of stuff and performance for his age the kid is going fine, it's just the flame out rate for kids as young and raw as he is is just so astronomically high. Kid could be a #1 starter some day, but there's a higher probability he never sniffs the majors.
