  1. Sometimes the difference between a hard - nosed competitor and a dirty player comes down to which uniform they are wearing.
  2. This is a great team. You would like to keep it intact as much as possible. It is up to John Henry to decide what the budget limitations are. If any key players are lost , it is important to have a good alternative for filling their shoes. The onus for that will be on Dombrowski, who I think has done a terrific job so far.
  3. One of the myths about Machado is that he is a great third baseman , but a mediocre shortstop. From what I can see , he is a terrific shortstop.
  4. My guess is that a well rested Pomeranz has looked impressive in his workouts , while Wright has struggled a bit. Just a guess. Anyway , a lefty reliever was not needed against the Yankees and Astros, but might play a role against the Dodgers.
  5. Cora will make his lineup decision based on what he thinks gives the team the best chance to win. No panic moves. I doubt that concern about Machado will enter into it at all.
  6. Hanley is running twenty miles a day on the beach , swimming the Atlantic Ocean, bench pressing four hundred pounds every day. Preparing for his comeback in 2019.
  7. It started in the Spring. 20-9 in spring training. Then the Sox won 17 of the first 19 out of the gate. Dominated. It continued all season. The best team in baseball. Won the A.L. East going away. Then they took down the vaunted Yankees in four games . Next they dethroned the champion Astros in five. Now , just one more challenge remains . The N.L. champion Dodgers. No let down now. Beat L.A. , then pop the champagne ,hang another banner and board the duck boats. Go Sox.
  8. If we had tried it for a few games back then, we might have a better idea of how it would work now. Anyway , J.D. is going to play in the outfield. That is a given. That is not new. He has played both left and right numerous times. We know his limitations. Putting Mookie at second means that JBJ and Beni stay where they are and Kinsler sits. Against left hand pitching, I don't know if that is a plus.
  9. He was a fine athlete , but he couldn't do the things Jordan could do. Russell and Wilt were not good shooters. They dominated because of a combination of size and athletic ability.
  10. Okay. I'm just having a problem with the logic here. I have no problem being for or against the idea. But be consistent. What I'm getting is that when dustcover suggested it a couple of months ago , it was shot down as crazy. A terrible idea. ( By the way , a possible injury wasn't much mentioned as a reason) Now it's like ; " here's a better idea, let's wait until the World Series and then we'll try it. " It seems that once Cora said he was considering the move , people changed their minds.
  11. But the plan was the same. J.D. in right , Mookie at second. Why was it crazy a couple of months ago , but a good idea now ? Especially since we now have a very good second baseman .
  12. Russell and Wilt came along at a time when there were not a lot of athletic big men in the game. They were able to dominate . Neither could be considered the all around basketball player that Jordan and the others mentioned were .
  13. J.D. is going to be in the outfield. That is for sure. Mookie is going to play somewhere. That is for sure. So , it really just comes down to who sits. JBJ , Benintendi or Kinsler? Maybe it depends on who the opposing pitcher happens to be. Obviously, with a late lead , J.D. will be taken out.
  14. At the time of dustcover's suggestion , we had Nunez struggling mightily at second base. Now , we have a top notch second baseman in Kinsler. So we are saying it was a crazy idea then , but a good idea now in the most important games of the year ?
  15. Point is ; Jordan , Russell , LeBron , Kobe as well as Bird and Magic would all be considered among the best of all time. And the rings are a big part of it. But that does not apply so much to baseball , where it is much more difficult for one player to win a championship.
  16. The poster known as dustcover suggested moving Mookie to second base a couple of months ago. As I recall , he was pretty roundly ridiculed . Hardly anyone though it was a good idea. He was even called " crazy." I guess things have changed ? Maybe apologies are in order ?
  17. You are finally starting to come around. Keep it up.
  18. Having a " ring " is a terrible way to judge a baseball player. No matter how good a pitcher may be , they need to depend on others. No matter how good a hitter may be , they have to bat in order, and can be pitched around as needed. The number of rings is probably more relevant in basketball, where one or two players can dominate. As for managers , their reputation lives and dies with the performance of the players. Grady Little would be much more highly regarded if Pedro had gotten a couple of more outs. What would Tito's legacy be if Dave Roberts got picked off ? ( It almost happened. ) Casey Stengel didn't exactly come across as a genius, but he was provided with many of the best players in the game. Alex Cora is off to a great start. Time will tell.
  19. Cora brings an energy and enthusiasm that Farrell no longer had. The players see it and react accordingly.
  20. Hanley had some good moments. He seemed pretty well liked by his teammates. But it was a bad contract and it was a good decision to cut bait. I didn't notice any particular weeping or gnashing of teeth by his teammates when he was released. They moved on and never missed a beat.
  21. Nothing wrong with Smoltz. Or Buck. Or Cora. Or any Sox player. And the umps are mostly okay. But that will not stop the venom. It will be oozing like clearasil on prom night.
  22. One thing for sure ; there will be plenty of hate to spread around. Machado, Puig , Joe Buck , John Smoltz , Alex Cora ,the umpires and any Sox player who screws up or even falters a bit.
  23. Manny was certainly not without his faults. Far , far from it. However, I tend to give a lifetime pass to anyone who contributed to a Sox championship. A championship that I had come to think I would never see. Now we have three , with number four within grasp. Manny certainly contributed and then some.
  24. I think the Dodgers are by far the toughest foe we could have faced in the Fall Classic. The Sox should prevail, but it will not be easy. Have to continue to come up with the big hit and make the big play.
  25. I think the Dodgers are by far the toughest foe we could have faced in the Fall Classic. The Sox should prevail, but they will have to continue to get the big hit and make the big play . This is not going to be all that easy.
