  1. Some say that D.D. mortgaged our future trying to win now. But if the prospects he dealt represented our future , the future was , perhaps, rather mediocre.
  2. Right. Bring them up at just precisely the right time. Good idea.
  3. Pretty sure the team will do everything possible to keep Mookie. Then , the decision will be his. If he stays , I think he will be remembered as one of the all time greats in Sox history.
  4. Maybe prospects should never be brought up and certainly never be traded. Just love them , hype them and keep them down on the farm forever or until they age out or Rule 5 grabs them. By that time, there will be a brand new batch of prospects to love and cherish and keep on the farm.
  5. Baseball is a difficult game to play at a high level all of the time. There are no perfect players. Sometimes guys strike out with men on. Sometimes guys make an error , maybe a costly one. Sometimes pitchers don't have their best stuff. If those things happen too often , you will have a losing team and changes will have to be made. But they will happen sometimes, even to the best of them. Sometimes it is hard for fans to understand that. Devers is not Brooks Robinson, JBJ is not Willie Mays , David Price is not Sandy Koufax , and so forth. But along with the others, they all are contributing factors in making this a great team. We need to appreciate that.
  6. 117 wins and some are still bitching and moaning. Even if everything is progressing perfectly, they will complain endlessly about something, even if it is just the umpires and announcers. It is really hilarious if you think about it.
  7. Being human, fans tend to have their favorite players, whom they tout and praise . The flip side is that they often have their " not so favorites " whom they tend to scapegoat and , at best , give faint praise. This happens even with a team as good and successful as this year's Red Sox. Fortunately, the players don't fall into that trap. They all seem to support each other 100%.
  8. J.D. has been one of the main reasons for this team's success. He plays if at all possible.
  9. The attendance , concession and merchandise money kind of goes hand in hand with winning. They can both feed off each other.
  10. The owners are all very well heeled. Some are just more willing to put money into the team than others. It doesn't guarantee success , but it certainly helps. People complained for years about the Yankees buying championships. But Steinbrenner was not the wealthiest owner , far from it. But he wanted to win more than some of the others. Now people are crying about the Sox spending. Much of it is just envy and jealousy. Just like fans who moan about how much the players are making. Get over it.
  11. Just when you thought the game thread couldn't get any crazier...............................
  12. Can't argue too much with that. Everyone is human and can be beat. But the Sox are the best team. And they have been all year.
  13. I would think Roberts would have been better off with Baez vs Devers , rather than Wood vs Nunez. Baez was throwing very well. If he thought he was better off with Wood vs Nunez , I would be surprised . It seemed to me that he thought he would get Wood vs Devers. It didn't happen.
  14. No doubt about that. If you want J.D.'s bat in there , you are going to give up some defense.
  15. There is no doubt that Martinez and Mookie are both going to play. I don't think putting Mookie in center weakens the defense very much , if at all. We have seen Mookie play some great centerfield. Maybe he could play a great second base as well , but we don't know that.
  16. I don't think Davey anticipated Cora pinch hitting Nunez for Devers in that situation.
  17. Using starting pitchers in the bullpen is fairly common in the postseason. Putting your gold glove outfielder at second base is very different. It is a very bold and unconventional move. If it was crazy before, I don't see why it is a good idea now. Of course , it could work. So , whatever.
  18. No , but it is still sports entertainment. There are similarities , at least for the fans.
  19. He is playing the heel role, the bad boy to the hilt.
  20. Baez too. Roberts erred in removing Baez for the lefty , Wood. Then Cora outmaneuvered Davey by sending up Nunez. Checkmate !
  21. Any thoughts on firing a fastball with the intent to hit the batter ?
  22. There were an awful lot of pitchers in the game last night. Kimbrel looked more dominant, more impressive than any of them.
  23. Here is one thing: Machado immediately went to help Pedroia up and talk to him. They knew each other. It is reasonable to think that Machado was trying to break up the play , not to injure Dustin. We have all seen Pedro drill a guy for no good reason except intimidation. Gibson too. And Lonborg , among others. What is acceptable and what is not is often determined by whose Ox is being gored.
  24. It goes without saying that you play to win every night. To me , the most obvious move is to put Martinez in right, Mookie in center , and sit JBJ. With a late lead , JBJ goes to center , Mookie to right , and J.D. comes out. But I trust Cora's judgement on this. He has managed brilliantly so far.
  25. I'm just trying to keep things in perspective.
