  1. You are absolutely right when you say that is not an accurate portrayal of what might have happened. Great teams don't scrounge around trying to find saves . And I have never known of a " bad closer " who had 39 .
  2. A top closer will help win games . Winning baseball will probably increase fan interest. So , indirectly, the closer helps spark the interest. But I have never heard of a fan who bought tickets based on who was the closer. I doubt that even entered into Dombrowski's thinking. People are just reaching for things to pick on here .
  3. Well , J.D. had 43 homers and 130 RBIs . We could have saved the money and signed some low cost jabroni who would only hit 40 homers and drive in only 125 runs. We would still have won. It's very simple.
  4. It is a bit unusual for a bad closer to have 39 saves . To say the least . I wouldn't want to count on that . Aroldis Chapman has never had a season with as many as 39 saves . Kenly Jansen and Blake Treinen each had 38 this season. You are not exactly helping your case by using a hypothetical and extremely unlikely example such as that .
  5. Would we have won without Kimbrel? Would we have won without Sale ? Or J.D. Martinez ? Or Mookie? Or Bogaerts? Or JBJ ? Or Benintendi ? Or Price ? Or any single player or combination of two players ? I don't really know . But I am glad we didn't have to find out .
  6. Yeah , I agree. A blend of the two philosophies with a good dose of common sense mixed in is probably the best way to go. Well that and a big payroll.
  7. What we really have here is a fundamental difference between the " old school " baseball mentality and the new wave of analytical, metric based thinking. The new wave derides traditional stats as " baseball card stuff." They have their own stats they go to . They downplay the importance of a manager. They downplay the importance of a closer. They downplay the importance of home runs , stolen bases, hit and run plays , pressure, clutch , choke , the whole mental aspect of the game and so forth. They are very firm in their opinions and don't really care if those who are involved in the game disagree with them . At present, I do think that most of those involved in the game do disagree, at least to a point . However , there is a growing movement toward the new school of thought in many front offices today. It will be interesting to see how it plays out in the years ahead.
  8. He did have 42 saves . And we were in a dogfight with the Yankees most of the season. I'm not sure who would have adequately replaced Kimbrel in that role. I'm not so sure we win the division either.
  9. No . I don't acknowledge that. Not at all. I think there is a connection. I also think Dombrowski and Cora are a major improvement over Cherington and Farrell.
  10. Yes. I do get the sense of a connection between the D.D. criticism and a fondness for Ben C. Maybe I'm wrong, but that is how I see it. Alex Cora did a terrific job . He is yet another of Dombrowski's excellent additions.
  11. Did they ask Mark Wohlers that question after he gave up the bomb to Jim Leyritz that turned around the 1996 Series and seemed to destroy his self confidence forever ? Maybe they should ask the same question to Mariano Rivera , Dennis Eckersley or Lee Smith . Might be interesting to hear their opinions.
  12. I still get this underlying sense of a longing for the days of Ben Cherington. Thus , all of the little shots at Dombrowski. An unprecedented three A.L. East titles in three years with a World Series championship is not enough. Let's return to the days of signing mediocrities, finishing dead last and having fun following the farm teams. The good old days of Ben C.
  13. You're right. We always remember the mistakes. There is certainly a need for caution. But how many championships have the small time , moneyball types won ?
  14. He's baaaaack . Carson Smith that is . Well , well. You never know.
  15. Some fans have a rotisserie league outlook. They want to prove they can beat you while spending the same as you do. This is commendable. But MLB is not like that. It is not fantasy, it is reality. It is big business. When the top players become free agents , there are only a handful of teams that are in the running for them. If you are not one of them , you will have a tough time getting to the top and staying there. That's just how it is.
  16. A ring is important to us. It is also important to ownership. How much additional revenue does it mean ? We don't know, but it's probably a lot. Not to mention the increased value of a championship franchise.
  17. The thing is ; even with the so called reset , they were still head and shoulders above most of the competition. The Sox can do that too.
  18. We need to remember that not everyone is a sophisticated fan who studies the advanced stats and various projections and budget issues. These other fans are the ones the team needs to fill Fenway and watch on TV. And they are paying plenty. They are paying many of the bills. They want a team that has a chance to win. They don't want to hear about resets , cliffs , bridge years , etc. Call them spoiled if you want , but they are a good part of the fan base. And ownership needs to remember that.
  19. The elephant in the room is still the Yankees. Years ago , in the pre playoff days , the Sox had some terrific teams who could quite possibly have won the World Series if they only could have beaten the Yanks for the pennant. Things changed after 2004 . But it never goes away. We still have to outdo New York to win it all. The difference now is that the Yankees also know they have to fear the Red Sox. It is unfortunate that it all seems to come down to money, but that is the reality. You have to be smart , but you also have to spend.
  20. It would be foolish to try and defend the championship by going cheap on the bullpen. I just don't get that. The pen is too important. You don't have to bust the budget to sign Kimbrel or Britton. But you have to at least get a quality guy like Ottavino or Robertson. ( Actually, I am not too keen on Robertson. ) I can't believe that we can't afford to do this much.
  21. Mookie is either the best or second best player in the game . On the road to Cooperstown. Absolutely the kind of guy you want to have spend his whole career in Boston. However , you can't get crazy either. It makes no sense to have Mookie if you then can't afford to surround him with a first rate supporting cast. It takes a lot of different pieces to make a championship team.
  22. Alabama and Clemson have built dynasty football programs. Notre Dame , and the others, have a way to go to reach that level. It would help to have a big time quarterback. Ian Book did a nice job after taking over for the disappointing Brandon Wimbush , but he is not a big time , NFL caliber quarterback.
  23. I don't live in a world where I want John Henry to buy my worries away. I also don't presume to place any limitations on what he is allowed to spend on his prized possession. ( Well , one of his prized possessions anyway )
  24. For want of the cash , the closer was lost. For want of a closer , the game was lost . For want of a game , the series was lost. For want of a series, the pennant was lost . For want of a pennant , the kingdom was lost. The kingdom was lost . All for the want of some cash. Point is : To stay on top you have to take care of the details. My guess is that we sign Ottavino. While he doesn't have the track record and reputation of Kimbrel or Britton, he does have good stuff and wouldn't cost nearly as much.
  25. Or we could sign the rag armed Joe Schmegegge , who washed out / aged out of the Independent Pecos League last season . He basically sucks , but he would come real cheap. We could save a bundle and not further decimate the farm . Worse comes to worst , we could demand that our highly paid starters pitch complete games . Maybe go to a six or seven man rotation to appease them.
