  1. Maestro of metaphor. I like that .
  2. The New England Patriots have announced , prior to defending their AFC title , that they have released placekicker Stephen Gostkowski, and replaced him with yet another wide receiver. Belichick said , " The plan is to build a big enough lead that a kicker is not necessary. Besides , Gronk can always boot a short field goal if need be. "
  3. Wife , " Honey , the furnace is not working. We need to get it fixed or maybe get a new one . Its getting cold in here ". Husband , " We don't have the money for that . We have to make do with what we have . Put on a sweater and light the oven. That should get us through some of the winter . And , don't blame me . I spent plenty on this house already . New carpets , two new T.V. s , dishwasher , deck furniture, dining room set and more . And the taxes are due . You can't have everything you know ."
  4. We are the champions. That gives us the right to be confident, maybe even cocky. However, there is also reality . The reality is that the bullpen is very important in baseball today. And it certainly seems to me that our bullpen is not up to par and is pretty much being ignored by management. That is playing with fire . We have a great team . Do we want to take the chance of wasting it by blowing games late ? To me , waiting to see what is needed at mid season is not a very good plan.
  5. Getting near the bottom of the barrell.
  6. I think we should be a little more pragmatic. The Yankees had a terrific bullpen last year , yet they could not beat us . However, they did win 100 games despite having a ton of problems with their rotation. No one should underestimate the importance of a bullpen in today's game . As it stands , their pen is better than ours . And it is not close. I don't see how any Sox fan cannot be concerned.
  7. Mookie Betts and Mike Trout are going to get more , maybe a lot more , than Harper and Machado . They are on a different level in every way .
  8. From what I see , many are very much influenced by his playoff struggles. It is repeatedly mentioned. Keep this in mind ; Kimbrel has been with the Sox for three years . Three times an All Star . Three straight A.L. East titles. Was he the main reason for the titles? No . Was he a big part of it ? Yes . The market will decide what kind of a contract he gets . I do not expect the Sox to pay more than the budget will stand . But I do expect them to at least find a suitable replacement. It will be very difficult to win again otherwise.
  9. Question : When are small sample sizes ( even ultra small sample sizes ) acceptable as evidence? Answer : When it suits our purposes.
  10. " If it ain't broke, don't fix it " makes sense. But you do need to maintain it or it will surely break.
  11. Can never have too much minor league pitching depth ( aka ham and eggers ) .
  12. Kind of a boring Hot Stove League so far . We need a major surprise or two to stoke the fire a bit and create some excitement.
  13. Two Sox fans walked into a bar . The bartender said ; " When do you guys think John Henry is going to reset ?" Two Sox fans walked out of the bar .
  14. Do we really want to even consider fixing the bullpen by breaking up the starting rotation ?
  15. It would not especially surprise me if Mookie has not yet achieved his peak. The best may well be yet to come. His combination of athletic ability, hand / eye coordination and natural skills are not often seen. On top of that ; his attitude , demeanor and desire to improve makes him unique. No telling what his limits are.
  16. BABIP certainly has some value in predicting future results. However , I think it can often be deceiving. Don't put too much stock in it , one way or another, without actually seeing many of the at bats. One thing for sure: You have no chance of getting a hit if you don't put the ball in play.
  17. One of the problems the top of the line free agents are running into is that there are so many teams who are not even remotely in the picture. And some of the very few teams that are in the picture are being cautious. These guys are going to have to decide if they want to sign with a team that they really don't want just to get a deal anything like what they want . Let's face it , the White Sox and Phillies are not the most desirable destinations.
  18. I can hear Machado cursing from here .
  19. The one main problem is the bullpen . We lost two high velocity arms . So far , no replacements . As it stands , the Yankee bullpen is considerably better than ours . And , other than in blowouts , the bullpen is a factor in almost every game . D.D. absolutely needs to address this .
  20. Vegas currently has the Red Sox as slight favorites. Not sure whether or not the wise guys factor WAR projections into their odds .
  21. Yeah. Hopefully, Deceptively Dormant Dave .
  22. I think the nickname " Desperate Dave " is really not accurate. Based on last off season and so far this off season , Dombrowski seems like the calmest, least worried guy in the room. Not the least bit desperate.
  23. Allen and Kimbrel are the same age . 30.
  24. When Clemson trounced Notre Dame , people were quick to say that the Irish did not belong in the playoffs. Now they have trounced Alabama as well . The reality: Clemson is a really , really good football team. Number one without any doubt.
