  1. The " MLB trade rumors "site should consider changing their name to the " MLB injury report ." The injuries seem to constitute most of the news from the camps these days .
  2. Florial was not making the cut anyway . He will just lose a little development time in the minors . The Yankees weakness is still just what it has been for a while . Starting pitching. While Paxton should help , I don't think Cashman has solved the problem as yet . I was not too impressed with what I saw from their young pitching prospects last year . They are going to have to rely on their slugging and their bullpen again.
  3. The Sale proposal is a tough one. Normally I am in favor of spending. And Sale is one of the best in the business. But it is an awfully big risk to make that kind of commitment to a pitcher , not to mention one who has not exactly been a model of durability.
  4. I've already exceeded my quota of bullpen comments , but just one more thought : I don't understand why you would put so much money into building a championship team and then go cheap and hope for the best with the bullpen. The way the game is played today , just about every close game comes down to a battle of the bullpens , often for three or more innings . The one advantage the Yankees have on the Sox is the pen . And it could be a considerable advantage. Here's hoping Mejia stays clean and contributes and that this kid Feltman is the real deal .
  5. Betts is better than Benintendi at each and every spot in the order . Take your pick . Betts at leadoff worked very well last year . I don't see any reason to change that . But advanced analytics says to put your best hitter in the two spot . And that seems to be what is dictating decisions these days . No big deal .
  6. Really , it is only the advent of the second wild card that gives some teams a glimmer of hope . What hurts interest a lot is that some of the weaker teams seem content with it . Trying to rebuild without spending much . I could be mistaken , but I think the NFL has both a salary cap and a salary floor .
  7. MLB is part of the sports / entertainment industry. While the die hard fans will always be there , they need to promote the game and generate interest among the others . They are not doing a very good job of it . This past snooze fest of an off season certainly did not help . I guess as long as they are turning a profit, they are satisfied. But it is not good that , two weeks from opening day , football has grabbed the spotlight.
  8. The Sox took the " standing pat " thing to a new level this off season . While usually not a good idea , it is understandable considering the woeful state of the A.L. A wild card spot , at the least , is all but certain. It would take a monumental collapse to fail to reach the playoffs / play in . Spring training has been less than impressive, but the early schedule is very winnable. Should get off to a good start , but probably not as good as last year . Winning the division has to be the goal . It will not be easy .
  9. MLB is incredibly stupid. After an extremely dull and boring " Hot Stove League " , we are two weeks from opening day . And all the sports headlines and all the talk is about football. With the excitement of free agent signings , the draft and trades , the fans are into it . They are hopeful, optimistic and anxious for the season to start . And all MLB can come up with is a few dumb rule changes . Meanwhile, they are set to play an entire American League season just to see who will be the second wild card . Plenty of teams with no shot at all . And plenty of fans who know it and are apathetic. Just terrible.
  10. I see that quite a few regulars made the road trip today . Maybe Cora ( at least somewhat ) agrees with me .
  11. Thanks . That puts my mind at ease .
  12. Now , I have to wonder just how many who are saying that spring training does not matter were enthusiastic and excited about how well the team was playing last spring training ? How Cora had them playing winning baseball ? Maybe it only matters when we want it to matter . Anyway , it is time for the boys to pick up the pace a bit . That is all I am saying.
  13. We need someone to do an in depth study on the relationship between a spring training record and how a team starts the regular season and how the season ends up . Any volunteers ?
  14. It is time for the boys to pick up the pace a bit and start playing some winning baseball . Don't wait until opening day to turn it on .
  15. An MLB owner who is willing to spend what it takes to give the fans a championship team is to be commended. I have no complaint with George Steinbrenner or John Henry doing it . The cry of " He bought a championship " is for the small time Charley losers . Today there are too many owners who take the revenue sharing and luxury tax money and invest it , but not in the team . That is the problem , not the Henrys and Steinbrenners. All of these guys are rolling in dough.
  16. If you play for the Boston Red Sox , you can be sure that at some point , some of the " Greatest fans in the world " will turn on you . And it doesn't matter how much you have contributed to the success of the team or what kind of guy that you are . There will always be haters .
  17. Wright has probably been doing P.E.D.s for a while . That's the kind of guy he is. Finally got caught and hid it from the club . Forget him . If you absolutely have to have a knuckleballer, bring back Wakefield. You can charge his salary to NESN .
  18. Maybe , but it would have been the right thing to do . Maybe too much to expect from him .
  19. If he left it to relatives , he would be a good family man . If he gave it to charity , he would be kind and generous . If he paid his taxes with it , he would be smart and sensible . If he gave it to a political action committee , he would be nuts .
  20. We need to stop making excuses for Wright . He clumsily gets hurt running the bases . Oh , it was Farrell's fault . His wife calls 911 for domestic violence. Oh , he didn't really hurt her . Just a misunderstanding. He tests positive for P.E.D. s . Oh , he was just treating his injury. He didn't know what he was taking . Enough .
  21. A problem child . As I have said before . Foolish to count on this guy for help in the bullpen . Release him .
  22. I have pointed out a couple of times recently that Steven Wright is a problem child for the Sox . The injuries , the slow recoveries and the 911 domestic violence call . And now this . This confirms it , in my opinion . Counting on this guy for anything was foolish .
  23. A " save " is what it is . Getting the final outs and closing out a win in a close , or relatively close , game . Meaningless stat or not , it is something that you need to have .
  24. Making the qualifying offer entitles you to a draft pick . I think it was understood that it would be declined.
  25. I think there is a general feeling that Arenado is a Coors Field hitter . Not a lot of concern that Mookie is a Fenway hitter . Mookie would have a greater appeal . The thing is , how many teams would be willing to spend that kind of money ? Not too many . That is probably the best thing that the Sox have going for them .
