  1. It is not hard to be a good manager when you have a great team and everything is falling nicely into place. The test comes when you face some adversity. It might be time to ( figuratively) kick a few butts . Personally, I think Cora is up to the task . We will see .
  2. Overheard in the outfield. " You're a gold glover , catch the damn ball . " " You're a gold glover too , you catch it ." " Oops . Too late ."
  3. Before he figures out which way the wind is blowing, he needs to figure out what the score is and what inning it is before trying to take an extra base .
  4. I think Max was being sarcastic with that one and the fiasco in the outfield.
  5. It looked to me that the Sox' pitchers were not throwing very many strikes . But the A's do chase a lot of pitches out of the zone . So , no need to throw strikes .
  6. He was a halfway decent actor . Stand up comedy was his game .
  7. He was made semi - famous by his former patient , the late , great Rodney Dangerfield . Definitely before your time .
  8. Here is the latest update from the Sox' chief medical officer , Dr . Vinnie Boombatz : When asked about the condition of Sale's shoulder ; the good doctor replied , " Which shoulder ? ".
  9. Great response . And that is why , even in this enlightened age , Indusrial Engineers are generally not welcomed on the workroom floor .
  10. In any industry, I think there is a certain resentment among operations managers when front office types interfere with day to day operations. I would think baseball managers would be no exception to that . It does seem that there are fewer and fewer " old school " type managers in MLB every year . More young , lower paid guys who are open to taking " suggestions " from the analytics crew .
  11. The Yankees were lusting after Harper for years . When he finally becomes available, they take a pass . Go figure .
  12. I'm the wrong one to answer that . I am sure we have somebody on here who can give an in depth analysis of Sale's velocity on every different temperature day , as well as considering the relative humidity.
  13. Thanks . I try to occasionally inject a little humor ( however lame ) into the intense seriousness of these vital and important discussions .
  14. I think Sale is still good enough to be effective with diminished velocity. However , without the velocity and the strikeouts, it is doubtful that he can be the dominant superstar that he has been . Let's hope the velocity returns as the weather warms up .
  15. In fairness to Booney , using your closer at home , in the top of the ninth in a tie game is pretty much s.o.p.
  16. After much research , I have developed a system for projecting win totals . It is called the " Galehouseorean Theorem . " It is based on the premise that the team that scores the most runs wins the game . So , assuming the Sox out score their opponent in 97 games this season , the Galehouseorean Theorem projects them to win 97 games . The beauty of my system is that it doesn't matter how many runs they win by . Blowouts and nail biters all count the same as long as they out score the other team . You are welcome .
  17. Reporter : Did Chapman suck ? Booney : A little bit . Reporter: Are you concerned ? Booney : A little bit . Reporter : are you really a doofus ? Booney : Kind of . I mean a little bit .
  18. Yeah . The Yankees are injury riddled, underachieving and floundering.
  19. It would be very difficult to fail to make the playoffs. I don't see any way that could happen. Once there , anything is possible. The important thing is to win the division and avoid the wild card shootout . That will not be as easy as last year . I think we reach the playoffs for sure , but a repeat of last year is very iffy .
  20. Signing extensions is the overwhelming trend right now . Signing Mookie will cost a lot , but may not be as difficult as you might think . It would be dumb to extend guys like Sale and Bogaerts , then let Mookie get away. Even if he became a free agent , there are very few teams that would be in on it . Very few . I expect him to stay , one way or the other.
  21. All eyes will be on the radar gun tonight.
  22. Vegas , your first sentence says it all . Small sample size . It amazes me that everyone is aware of small sample syndrome, but they still use it to make a case . Nobody , but nobody, can avoid the occasional dry spell . Look at the big picture. Mookie is the last guy to be worried about .
  23. I understand that . I mentioned a few areas where money could have been freed up .
  24. Slasher , The slow start may be just one of those things . As John Sterling would say , " That's baseball , Suzyn ." I would say the most obvious thing was losing our closer plus another power arm from the pen . Nothing was done in that area . Kimbrel was likely too expensive , but there were at least a half dozen quality relievers available for an affordable price. Hopefully, Barnes can fill the closer's role . But he was already an important part of the bullpen. Somebody has to take his spot . The closer is the linchpin of the pen , but not the whole answer. You need four or five good arms out there . We will see how it goes as the season develops . The offense figures to be strong enough to carry a light hitting catcher , although that is not optimal. My feeling is that with a little creative thinking , enough money could have been freed up to patch the holes .
