  1. I am waiting for somebody to post some convoluted set of stats proving that two times zero is actually not zero .
  2. It was a joke . A boxing reference . Roberto Duran . I am sorry . No mas .
  3. People are still saying the pen is fine . They are saying that because they want it to be true . But it is not true . The pen is not fine . The pen is mediocre at best . Probably below average . Certainly not championship caliber .
  4. Duran is a battler . Might be a heavy hitter . The word on him defensively is that he has " hands of stone ."
  5. Any business should always look to improve and grow . If they fail to do that they will suffer for it . The Red Sox are no exception . They failed to do that this off season and spring training . And it shows so far this season . How often do you see a championship team have an off season plan to not only not improve , but to actually get worse . The complacency and stand pat attitude reeked of over confidence . That is not how to run a business . Now , we have the highest payroll in the game and a .500 record . Spin it any way you want . This has been a management failure. Having said that , it is way too early to liquidate . Way too early to give up . Maybe make a couple of moves and see if we can turn things around .
  6. It is kind of odd that some fans don't believe in a player being hot or cold . They don't believe in clutch . They say there is no such thing as momentum . They throw out all of the traditional stats and ideas about the game . But they swear by " mojo " . Mojo and sabermetrics . Go figure .
  7. I have said it a thousand times. Closing ain't easy. People can talk all they want about " leverage situations " and the good hitters coming up in the seventh inning , but getting the last three outs is still tough . Barnes blew the save last night , but I was not the least bit surprised to see the Sox come back against Shawn Kelly , who looked like he would rather be in a Turkish prison than trying to close that game in Fenway . Closing ain't easy .
  8. No word yet on what the motive ( if any ) was for this .
  9. The Sox can stay in contention simply by beating up on the garbage teams , of which there are plenty . At some point , they will have to show that they can beat the good teams . As far as D.D. pushing the panic button; maybe if he was a little more concerned during the off season , we wouldn't even be talking about that now .
  10. The initial reports on these kind of things are often wrong and confusing. It said he was shot in the leg . Then it turns out to be in the back , with the bullet passing through him . His father is quoted as saying that they wouldn't tell him where he was being treated . That seems incredible. They say it happened at an " entertainment center . " What is that ? An amusement park ? A night club ? Or what ? They say it was a robbery. That doesn't make much sense either. The main thing is that he apparently is going to pull through. Be thankful for that .
  11. The Cubbies are pretty likable anyway , even without any ex Red Sox connections. They are kind of the Red Sox of the National League.
  12. Simple . I do like and respect all players who contributed to the Red Sox success . A success that I started to think I would never live to see and enjoy . I still appreciate what they have done , even after they leave . Kimbrel contributed big time . Three straight A.L. East titles . I have difficulty understanding those who don't see that . As for Theo , he has a pretty good track record of knowing what he is doing. I am and always will be a die hard Sox fan . But I will be rooting for the Cubs in the N.L.
  13. Why ?
  14. One more reason to like the Cubs . Wrigley, Theo , Lester , Rizzo and now Kimbrel .
  15. Two observations on the Yankees : 1 - They need to get Judge , Stanton , Betances and Severino back soon . The B Team has overachieved and carried them this far , but it is starting to let down and their success cannot be maintained . 2 - They missed the boat on Keuchel . Their rotation is their Achilles heel , and it has been for a while now . Without improvement , it will again be their downfall. You are welcome.
  16. I did not name names . I'll leave it up to the posters to decide if they have a seat on the distinguished panel .
  17. The Sox should win tonight . They almost have to . A sweep would be hard to take .
  18. When a team slips as much as the Sox have so far this year , you can't blame just one area . It takes a team effort . Whatever you think of saves and blown saves as stats , when your bullpen has 12 saves and 9 blown saves , it is not too good . Whatever you think of ERA as a stat , when only Price among the starters has a good ERA , it is not too good . Add to that the offense , which has been on and off , and the defense which hasn't been stellar either . Throw in some bad base running . Lastly you had D.D. sleeping at the switch and Cora losing that magic touch . It has truly been a concerted effort .
  19. I don't have a persecution complex at all . Just stating my opinion on things . I think the " panel of experts " reference is valid .
  20. Many years ago , when I was young , and the Yankees were enjoying one of their dynasties, I developed a dislike for Yankee fans . This was due to their boasting , bragging and generally superior attitude . It wasn't enough to just have the best team , they claimed to have the best of everything. Regrettably, some Sox fans have now developed that same smug attitude. Maybe that is what success does to you . Maybe it is just human nature.
  21. The problem started in the off season with the complacent, stand pat attitude. Actually, we didn't even stand pat . We were the only contender that got weaker . I pointed this out at the time , but was shouted down by our panel of experts. Then came the lackadaisical spring training. I pointed that out also , but was again overruled by the panel of like- minded experts . They told me it was " meaningless " and the Sox would be ready to rumble when the bell rang . Now here we are in June . A .500 record and 10 games behind the Yankees B team . Not to worry. I'm still wrong and the panel is still right . It might be time for me to quit .
  22. It would make no sense to blow up the team at this point. Given the sorry state of the A.L. , a wild card berth is not only possible , but probable. That said , it is kind of pathetic that we have been reduced to hoping for the second ( gimmicky) wild card . What happened?
  23. There are so many stats , so many time frames, so many possible sample sizes , so many exceptions to the rule , so many upsets , so many examples to choose from , that you could make a case , pro or con , for almost anything in baseball. But when a team has 12 saves and 9 blown saves , a reasonable person would agree that something is wrong. And it is not a big surprise. It was predictable.
  24. I am not inclined to debate with someone who makes an asinine statement like " blown saves don't mean s*** . " There is no creditability there .
  25. Signing Eovaldi rather than Kimbrel was hardly a slam dunk. It seems to have been based largely on Nate's World Series heroics, while Kimbrel struggled . But that is a pretty small sample size. Looking at the bigger picture, Nate is a 29 year old who has a career record of 44 - 53 , with an ERA of 4.21 and a history of arm injuries. Craig is ( arguably? ) the premier closer of his era , 31 years old , healthy , with an unparalleled career ERA of 1.91 . Hopefully Nate can return from the I.L. soon and contribute to another pennant . Hopefully.
