We are about halfway through the season. Workman has pitched 35 innings . Barnes has pitched 33 innings. Brasier has pitched 31 innings . I would not call that being seriously overworked. There is no way you can excuse or gloss over 15 blown saves .

Here is a quote from probably the best reliever of all time , Mariano Rivera : " Nowadays, the starters only go five or six innings and the bullpen takes over from there . So that tells you how important the bullpen is now ."

I'm not trying to defend the starters . They certainly have underachieved . But that shouldn't be used to offset the legitimate criticism of the bullpen.

Starters just don't go deep in games these days . Like it or not , that's how it is. That is why the bullpen is so important. As for blown saves in the 7th or 8th ; it is still your late relievers , your top bullpen guys being unable to get three outs without giving up the lead . And it is happening far too often.

If you don't count the blown saves , the bullpen has done a fine job. The starters have been the bigger problem. Yup . And if you don't count those plane crashes , Boeing has done a fine job . Most of the delays are the airport's fault .

It is kind of sad that we are hoping that the return of the problem child , the wife beater is going to give this club a much needed shot in the arm . Something is not right ( Wright ) here .

Dombrowski blew into Boston like a big wind from Winnetka . He aggressively made moves that turned a last place team into a champion . Unfortunately , this past off season he rested on his laurels and took a long winter's nap. The same mistake Cherington made after 2013 . Hopefully , this club can still turn things around, but the season has been a disappointment so far . There is no disputing that .

Well , you don't want to cut off your nose to spite your face . You can trade anybody if it improves the team , but not just for the sake of doing something .

I do not agree with the idea that the bullpen is the area where you look to economize . The pen has never been more important than it is in baseball today . The pen is a factor in just about every close game . The argument you hear is that relievers can be inconsistent . That may be true , but starters can be inconsistent as well . But whether it is starters or relievers , the better , more consistent ones usually cost more money. When you plan your budget , you should not look to shortchange the bullpen . It is too vital an area .

I have heard it said that blowing a game that seemed like a sure win can be deflating to a team . I don't necessarily believe that , but the Sox sure looked deflated and flat today .

I watched that game last night . There was a definite playoff atmosphere with both the players and the fans . Every at bat was a battle .

You can come up with all of stats you want to try and paint a better picture , but when you have as many blown saves as you have saves , it is pretty obvious that you are having trouble holding a late lead and closing out a victory. And when all is said and done , that is the biggest and most important thing for a bullpen.

I never doubted that the Sox would inevitably win the game . And I say again that they will sweep this series against this pathetic excuse for a major league club . -
It is interesting how many fans worry about saving some money for the owners . These are the same billionaire owners who fleece the fans in a way that used car salesmen have not yet even imagined.

I have a problem with the expression " playing with house money". For one thing , once you have won it , it is not house money . It is yours. Besides that , it sounds kind of like , " It's okay to lose ." It is never okay to lose .

Not sure the Nats will be sellers . If they are , there will be plenty of competition for Doolittle.

I think Ray's ownership is just saying they are not happy with the current situation and are thinking of moving the franchise. I seriously doubt they will actually split their games between these two cities. Too many problems. Bad idea . Pretty sure the Union would fight it as it would surely be tough on the players and their families . Bottom line : Not going to happen .

Kimmi , There are so many different things that factor in that it is tough to form any conclusion. A starter's wins can often be dependent on the reliever's holds and saves . And their losses can often depend on the opposition bullpen's holds and saves . In the end , it all kind of works together. It is pretty much impossible to prove anything. But we all have our own opinions. And that's okay .

J. D. will turn 32 in August . Maybe his talent is declining . I have heard that once you pass 30 , it all starts going downhill .

Teams have winning streaks and losing streaks during a typical season . They are all incorporated into the overall record . I am well aware of all the nuances of ERA , saves and blown saves . They apply the same to all teams . I would definitely say that our starting rotation is better than the Yankee's rotation. The difference is the bullpens . And that will continue to be a concern every time we play a close game with them .

People saying that the bullpen is a strength is a twist on the old self fulfilling prophecy. They predicted it would be a strength, they want it to be a strength and so they believe that it actually is a strength. But it simply is not true . Our pen has 16 saves and 14 blown saves . The Yankee's has 24 saves and 10 blown saves . The Yankees pen also has 11 more " holds." The difference in the bullpens is one of the main reasons we trail New York by 6 1/2 games .

The Twins might be the real deal ,but I am not entirely sold quite yet . I wonder how well they would do if they switched divisions with Toronto .
