  1. Just can't work up any sympathy for either side. The owners are a bunch of smug , greedy , dishonest billionaires. ( And that includes John Henry. ) Just not a very likable group. And the players are basically a bunch of spoiled rotten young men who are looking for more and more money all of the time for playing a game. Not exactly a part of the " working class." And the windup to it all is that it is going to be the fans who have to pick up the tab.
  2. Just like ballgames , movies used to be shorter . Double features were common. Bygone days.
  3. The small market teams simply cannot match the spending of the big market teams. And you can't realistically expect them to. A salary cap and floor could change that , but that's not going to happen. Luxury taxes and revenue sharing are just ploys to get around the absence of a cap. Can you force a small market owner to spend more when he does not generate nearly the revenue of the big markets? As it stands , it will always be difficult for some teams to compete with the big spenders. And , with a couple of exceptions , the less you spend , the weaker your team will be. And the weaker your team is , the less revenue you will generate. No way out of it without major changes. And the players are just as much an obstacle to change as are the owners. They all want more and more money. And they all talk about competitive balance. But those things do not go together. You can't have it both ways.
  4. Many moons ago , when I was a kid , I used to love to go to Sunday doubleheaders. Got there early for batting and infield practice . Stayed after the games to watch the players exit and look for autographs. Still light out when I got home , would play ball before supper. It's just not like that anymore. Things are different now. A completely different era.
  5. Expanded playoffs is nothing more than another money grabbing gimmick.
  6. The owners have to weigh the risks against the rewards. Since we don't have access to their books, we really don't know the results . Folks overpay for things everyday on e-bay if they really want the item. I would guess that some are satisfied and some regret it.
  7. Nick , Billy Beane is still a maiden , championships wise.
  8. You don't evaluate the chef on the ingredients he adds , but rather on how good the meal is. Bloom will , or at least should , be evaluated on how the team does. How many A.L. East titles and World Series championships he wins. That has to be the bottom line.
  9. The owners and players will reach a compromise and come to an agreement one of these days. They could do it right now except for their mutual distrust , stubbornness , greed and stupidity . Plain old common sense is lacking in MLB ( and just about everywhere else ) these days.
  10. I heard a TV pundit say that Michael Bloomberg had enough money to give one million dollars to every person in the U.S. , and still have plenty left. No, he doesn't. He is filthy rich , but not nearly that rich. It is a fairly common math error that folks make even though it is basic arithmetic.
  11. Is that the new math?
  12. When I was a kid ( admittedly many seasons ago) , we would save up money from the deposits on soda bottles and buy general admission tickets at the ballpark . If you got there early enough , you could find a seat which was nearly as good as many of the reserved seats.
  13. Today , $3 might get you enough gas to mow your lawn.
  14. Is MLB a national pastime or is it just another cutthroat business enterprise? If it is the former , then competitive balance is important. If it is the latter , owners should be able to spend as much or as little as they please. And free agency should be a constant open season , depending on a player's contract. It would be dog eat dog. Right now , MLB and the players seem to want it both ways. Obviously , there will be a compromise at some point. But the animosity will remain and the fans will continue to become disenchanted .
  15. Baseball players are in a unique position when it comes to labor relations. They all have agents to negotiate their personal contracts . And they also have a union to bargain for what limits on the total payroll should or should not be. In a way , they are united . But in another way , they are competing against each other for a bigger slice of the pie. And there is very little job security. I don't think there is anything quite like it in the business world.
  16. Boxing and horse racing have been loosely regulated and poorly promoted for years. They took the fan base for granted and paid the price for it. The fans found other sports to follow. And wager on. Baseball should learn from this and be very careful. There are a lot of alternatives for the entertainment dollar. And there simply are not enough die hard fans to support the game. It is stupid to keep alienating your fans.
  17. It's all just standard negotiating tactics. Don't get all worked up over it. It will all get worked out in the end. And the fans , as always, will foot the bill.
  18. Folks, Gerrit Cole wants you to know this is all about " the integrity of the game." Not about money .
  19. A five dollar bill doesn't mean you are rich. Just that it's better than six quarters.
  20. I heard about a shrewd trader who got six shiny new quarters for just one wrinkled old five dollar bill.
  21. Only if you are forgoing obtaining/retaining quality players who can help the big club win now, in order to build up the farm for a tomorrow that never seems to come.
  22. I wonder if anyone ever did an examination of just how much , if any, correlation exists between these " official rankings" of farm systems and the near future success of the MLB parent club?
  23. Nomar. He clearly rates ahead of Xander. Better in all the major offensive categories , Batting average , RBIs , Home Runs and OPS. Xander might win a popularity contest however.
  24. The Sox hired an analytics company to " optimize" game start times. Uffa!!! The end is near.
