  1. I see no reason to keep Swihart as he is not having the kind of year we need from a backup catcher. Better to lose two catchers and try to find another decent younger catcher in the market. We can use someone from the minors if we need a third backup if our primaries get hurt. Hembree is not that great either and probably can be replaced next year. I have no faith that Pedey will make it back and be viable so that may be sunken costs but Marco Hernandez might be a more realistic solution at 2nd. I would also look to replace JBJ as he is having a terrible year at the plate. Should have done it this year but to carry on with him would be a huge mistake. Chavis is likely to make the ML roster some time next year as well. I tthink Pomeranz can be replaced from within.
  2. This is precisely what people have been concerned about. Later on coming up against a one game series against either the Mariners or the Astros and facing a hot pitcher, probably a left hander, and being shut down. The lineup has some strengths, but without hitting up and down the lineup, and relying on our best may not be enough. I don't see what DD can do under the constraints, but we clearly have weak spots and should be attempting to shore those up.
  3. We faced excellent pitching tonight and it shut down the lineup. We have Moreland slumping now as well as the bottom of the order that is weak. Its not all gloom and doom, we lost by 1 run to a very good team at their home stadium while we have been on the road for 6 games and on the west coast for 3. Unfortunately another error for Devers tonight so that was a negative and Bradley's slump is truly an epic one. If we had more financial flexability, I think DD would attempt to strengthen our lineup but I really don't see him being able to do that as we are approaching a Luxury Tax Limit that carries big fines and lost of draft capabilities. Pedey probably is not getting back anytime soon and our minor leagues don't have hitters that are likely to help us. We have to find a way to win with who we have. Our pitching is good and we have core hitters that are very good.
  4. When our best hitters are overmatched, I don't think many of us would expect the much weaker hitters to do anything. It appeared to be the case tonight. That's why its so important to win the games where we hold a lead late. There will be games like this.
  5. He is currently not taking part in any baseball activities with the idea that they want to give it more time to heal more completely. The thought is it will be several weeks before he can come back and then depending on how he heals. I wouldn't count on him until after the all star break and possibly even later.
  6. June 14, 2018 2:53 pm Red Sox's Dustin Pedroia: Continues to deal with inflammation by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire Pedroia will step away from baseball activities due to the lingering inflammation in his left knee, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. Pedroia was recently able to resume hitting and playing catch but will take a break from all activities for the time being to give his knee the best chance to heal. The Red Sox have yet to describe a timetable for their second baseman, but a multi-week absence isn't out of the question, especially considering the knee troubles Pedroia has dealt with in the past.
  7. We are blessed to have them hitting 1 and 2 in the lineup and I would be happy in either order.
  8. Yes, and they face a good one tonight. Beni, Moreland, Devers and JBJ are all going to have trouble tonight.
  9. What offense there was last night came from atypical sources. Bogey of course has been solid this year but JBJ and Vaz getting hits are good signs. I for one do not want to talk about Price using the seemingly disparaging name of Mr. Tingles. He has and is earning respect with his recent performances. It was a huge win although it was too late for me as I am recovering from a couple of long softball games in the heat.
  10. We may well have the best 1 and 2 hitting combination in all of baseball. Beni is now over 300 after a slow start. He has 78 hits and 38 walks. Lets hoe they can stay healthy as the long season is a real grind.
  11. Maybe there is more to the story than the PAs for contract extension. Perhaps something was going on which the Sox believed would not make him close to a viable player either the rest of this year or the next. Not idea what that might be so it isn't worth speculating as to the nature of the issue, but it seems to be realistic to believe the Sox felt he was not going to be viable.
  12. Personally I don't find your attack on DD to be that amusing. As far as Devers is concerned, he is playing like a young Pablo Sandoval but without the big contract. He has defensive issues, he is heavy and may get heavier, he swings from the heels and doesn't know the strikezone. The good thing is he is still so young and may make progress in all of his weak areas, or some of them or maybe none of them. We shall see. A lot will depend on his coachability and his determination to be a better player. We certainly could use a better third baseman and he may be that guy as he develops. We have said that about JBJ's hitting and now he is in the prime of his career and still has not become a consistent contact hitter. You can hope for guys to get better, but there is no guarantee that they will.
  13. Anyone hear any more about Marco Hernandez. He was slow in recovering from shoulder issues but he has looked like a real prospect at 2nd base in the past. I can't find anything about his progress.
  14. That shouldn't mean the end of a career, just a blip on the screen. As long as he doesn't test that way again, he should make his way back to full consideration for the team in late August, if he fills a need. I hope he can regain his form after the 80 days off.
  15. Thats exactly the approach I recommend. We know we have very limited resources available both in financials and in tradeable assets. There are some weak areas and perhaps an unknown with Pedroia. We may sustain other injuries in the next period. Clearly we all want to improve the team under these constraints. No great rush but a willingness to make needed moves is important and I think DD and Cora are people wiling to take action as they did with Hanley.
  16. Agreed. Going to left with two strikes on him is more impressive to me than if he pulled the ball.
  17. Chavis is available to return on June 26th. Since he was high on the prospect list, I would hope he can regain that status in a month of playing time. I understand the projection for him now is 1st base, so we really wouldn't have a spot for him there this year.
  18. He claims he unknowingly ingested the substance. At any rate, he is eligible to return to the minors on June 26th and the thinking is that they were going to try him at 1st base. We shall see if that makes sense for a 5'10" guy or that he stays with 3rd base. Since he was the number one prospect for the Sox, it makes sense for him to get back and try to develop into a useable player hitter for late this season or next season.
  19. E-Rod is doing his usual thing. Keeps the runs down but the pitch count up. 9 base runners in 5 innings and 95 pitches. He says he wants to throw more strikes but keeps on nibbling. He is getting it done but after a use of the BP last night it would have been good not to have to use them for 4 more tonight.
  20. On base 4 times in 5 last night and his 12th HR tonight. Beni is getting the job done.
  21. Right now he is likely to run into one once in a while. Lets see him do it more consistently and then you can hype him.
  22. Well, tonight he has left Betts out and since he has been well rested with 2 weeks off, it seems odd to me. Of course Betts may still be injured and that would be different.
  23. He hasn't played in two weeks and should be well rested. If nothing is wrong with him then why not play him. I just don't get the logic, unless something is wrong with him and if thats the case its scary.
  24. Today we have people throwing around racism comments where they don't apply. During his time with the Sox they were past the Yawkey days. One or two fans in a 36,000 group of fans using racist comments does not make the crowd racist and I wouldn't at all be surprised if similar fans shouting hateful comments can be found in any of the ML parks.
  25. Red Sox Scoring during last 8 games: 9 6 7 2 0 4 2 2 The last 5 games the scoring has been down and its a good thing our pitching was as good as it has been. With so little out of the bottom of the lineup and with Mookie just now getting back, it was probable that some of our bigger hitters would go through off periods. Moreland has been of late and JDM can't be a hero every night. Lets hope Mookie can get a good feel of ML pitching with a few more reps. The good news is Beni and Bogey still were productive last night.
