  1. The Red Sox offseason is among those reviewed by a FiveThirtyEight columnist: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-teams-that-won-lost-and-confused-us-this-mlb-offseason/
  2. CORRECTION: Gurriel will become a XX( free agent upon expiration of contract after 2023 season
  3. A trade for Daulton Varsho likely would have cost the Red Sox a top prospect such as Triston Casas, who is a month older than Gabriel Moreno, who plays a premium position. Casas entered the 2022 season as the 17th-ranked prospect at Baseball America while Moreno entered the season as BA's seventh-ranked prospect. This year Casas posted 0.3 fWAR and 120 wRC+ in 27 MLB games while Moreno posted 0.7 fWAR and 113 wRC+ in 25 games. Of course the Diamondbacks also got one year of established veteran Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the trade. Two years of Alex Verdugo might be a reasonable comp.

  5. FWIW when the Red Sox traded Mookie Betts with one year of team control remaining, Betts had posted 36.9 fWAR and 42.2 bWAR in 794 games with the Sox. Rafael Devers, who has one year of team control remaining, has posted 18.1 fWAR and 15.2 bWAR in 689 games with the Red Sox. Betts was a four-time All Star and the 2018 AL MVP while Devers is a two-time All Star who has never finished in the top 10 in MVP voting. Since entering MLB in 2014 Devers ranks ninth among qualified third basemen with 18.1 fWAR in 689 games (sandwiched between Kris Bryant with 18.2 WAR in 620 games and Eugenio Suarez with 17.5 fWAR in 810 games): https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=3b&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2022&month=0&season1=2017&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2017-01-01&enddate=2022-12-31 Newly acquired Justin Turner posted 22.2 fWAR in the same number (689) of games over that period. Working in Devers' favor is his relative youth at 26 years of age.
  6. David Price was a 34-year-old lefthander with three years and $96 million remaining on his contract when the Red Sox traded Price, Mookie Betts and cash to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Chris Sale, a lefthander who turns 34 in March, has two years and $55 million remaining on his contract. A package of Rafael Devers and Sale would not be out of the question.
  7. Isn't that precisely what the Red Sox did with Mookie Betts?
  8. Avoid use of I, you and related personal pronouns. Stick to ideas. IMHO
  9. Petty personal attacks do not enhance the quality of this forum’s discussions.

  11. From The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal: https://theathletic.com/4014758/2022/12/19/red-sox-owners-free-agency-blame/ Subscription required.
  12. At The Athletic, the Red Sox came in second on columnist Jim Bowden's list of losers (and winners) so far this offseason: https://theathletic.com/4005734/2022/12/19/mlb-offseason-winners-losers/ Subscription required.
  13. Baseball Trade Values assigns Rafael Devers a surplus value of $37 million and six years of New York Mets third baseman Bret Baty a surplus value of $33.8 million.
  14. Any chance the New York Mets trade for Rafael Devers?
  15. We're counting on you to provide optimism but the Red Sox currently look a mess from this outsider's perspective.
  16. The Blue Jays added Anthony Bass and Erik Swanson, but Kolten Wong went to the Seattle Mariners. The Rays signed Zach Eflin.
  17. And Masataka Yoshida is one year older than Andrew Benintendi.
  18. Does the potential compensatory draft pick for Xander Bogarts or Nathan Eovaldi fall after the fourth round regardless? Qualifying Offer | Glossary | MLB.com WWW.MLB.COM The Official Site of Major League Baseball
  19. Pitching remains the greatest concern if the Red Sox lose Nathan Eovaldi, Michael Wacha and Rich Hill from a staff that this year ranked 22nd in fWAR: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2022&month=0&season1=2022&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0 Kenley Jansen and Chris Martin could provide 120 effective innings but many question marks remain.
  20. Agreement with notin is uncomfortable but Joey Gallo would be a good fit in right field at Fenway Park. With the qualifying offer, Nathan Eovaldi could be facing a depressed market in free agency. The righthander's price might be right for the Red Sox. Elvis Andrus could work. Still the Red Sox might be challenged to field a better team than the 2022 version. Or not.
  21. The Red Sox still have seven days to peddle Jeter Downs to the Seattle Mariners: https://www.talksox.com/forum/threads/20473-A-Realistic-View-at-2023-Part-I?p=1500689&highlight=downs+mariners#post1500689 :D
  22. Will Jeter Downs be claimed after being designated for assignment to make room for Masataka Yoshida?
  23. Signing a top free agent does not guarantee immediate on-field success. Of MLB Trade Rumors' Top 20 free agents last offseason, only eight signed with teams that advanced to the postseason in 2022: 1. Carlos Correa MIN 2. Corey Seager TEX 3. Freddie Freeman LAD (lost NLDS) 4. Kris Bryant COL 5. Kevin Gausman TOR (lost WC) 6. Marcus Semien TEX 7. Robbie Ray SEA (lost ALDS) 8. Trevor Story BOS 9. Max Scherzer NYM (lost WC) 10. Nick Castellanos PHI (lost World Series) 11. Marcus Stroman CHC 12. Javier Baez DET 13. Starling Marte NYM (lost WC) 14. Eduardo Rodriguez DET 15. Kyle Schwarber PHI (lost World Series) 16. Chris Taylor LAD (lost NLDS) 17. Raisel Iglesias LAA * 18. Carlos Rondon SFG 19. Jon Gray TEX 20. Seiya Suzuki CHC * traded midseason to ATL (lost NLDS) https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/11/top-50-mlb-free-agent-rankings.html Postseason teams that had signed a Top 20 free agent all ended the season with a loss. Castellanos and Schwarber were the only Top 20 free agents who played beyond a divisional series.
  24. The Kansas City Royals reportedly will sign lefthander Ryan Yarbrough to a one-year contract for $3 million plus up to $1 million in performance bonuses:
  25. The Cleveland Guardians reportedly have signed catcher Mike Zunino:
