  1. Sometimes I actually like WAR!
  2. Why wouldn't he want to, assuming 1) he cares about the team and 2) he intends to remain in baseball to some degree? Spreading the money (and more) over a longer period of time would allow him to have a guaranteed income into the future as well as free up some LT money for the FO. IMO the biggest question is the one Moon asked... Would the Union allow him to do that? (Of course, in the real world he can do what he wants to do. The MLBPA can expect or pressure players to do something but they can't require it).
  3. I don't understand why everyone isn't as outraged as I am about this. Manny Machado 'cheap shotted' one of the best players in baseball and ended his career, and there seems to be an attitude toward it of, "Well, it's part of the game". Well, it's NOT part of the game - or at least it shouldn't be, and IMHO there's no room in this game for people like Machado who intentionally risk another player's career and then dismiss it with, "I'll do anything I have to do to help my team win", which is what he said after the incident with Pedroia.
  4. I'll say it again... Thanks, Manny, you C/S.
  5. I can't say as I've seen him smile - I wasn't watching for it. However, on the day in ST when the Sox had a moment of silence for Swi's recently passed brother Porcillo did put his arm around Swi's shoulders, gave him a 'shoulder hug' and a pat on the shoulder. My words don't due this justice, but it was a fine moment.
  6. I keep reading the title of this thread and want to chime in on it, maybe because I can be a bit of a dork at times. If the question is, "Would the Sox coaching and training staff.... " then IMO the answer is a resounding YES, they would, but only in the right situation. However, if the real question is, "Did the Sox coaching and training staff.... " then IMO the answer is NO, they didn't. They have too much tied up in his arm now to do anything that stupid. However, if this were the last game of the WS and/or his last start in a Sox uniform, yeah, I think he'd be sent out there.
  7. Sometimes good defense is what gives a team "great pitching". If Bradley doesn't make that catch Workman's ERA, WHIP, etc all go up. It's a lot easier for a pitcher to post good numbers when he has the Red Sox outfield behind him than it is for pitchers on other teams.
  8. Things that don't show up in the stats and are therefore easy to forget... And while we're on the topic of JBJ, it's worth saying that if he doesn't make that outstanding catch last night it becomes a 1-run game and the O's have the tying run in scoring position.
  9. And even if he doesn't he should be our CF'er. I'll post again what I said in my (only) post in the game thread: I'll tell you what.... The guys in the booth are gushing about Moreland's double but JBJ makes the catch on that ball...every day. And if that catch is made - that 's the difference in the game. That's why I want JBJ in our outfield.

  11. We may not be at a "must win" point but we're at the "I hope we don't lose another one tonight" point. As the saying goes, "You can't win it in April but you sure can lose it."
  12. Ya think? More than closers??
  13. I'm not sure we can blame that steal of home on Vaz. Devers was playing too far off the bag to be considered "holding" the runner, Sale was pitching from a full windup, and Vaz couldn't have caught that pitch with a butterfly net. But I agree about the PB's.
  14. Spring training Starts & IP'd 2018 2019 Price 3/12.0 2/6.2 (because he got the snot kicked out of him in 1st start) Porcillo 4/16.0 3/12.0 ERod None 5/15.0 Sale 4/14.2 2/9.0 Evoldi 5/16.2 (with TB) 2/7.0 These are the stats but I'm still not sure that this reflects the amount of work they got before the start of the regular season. I've always thought that pitchers have their own ST regimen that doesn't show up in games. I still have no explanation for what's going on but IMO one or two ST starts and the few innings involved shouldn't make a difference in a pitcher's readiness for the regular season. EDIT: And I DO wish I knew how to format columns on this site. Ugh.
  15. Velazquez has to be officially considered no deeper than #6 for us now. Given the fact that we go 8 or 9 deep in the pitching staff every year I fully expect to see him again... frequently.
  16. More like FGCU.
  17. Please remember ^that^. Also please remember that a banned poster taking on a new name doesn't grant him the same benefit of doubt that an actual new poster would get.
  18. That's where I am with the catching too. Before Swihart got hurt in the outfield he and Vaz were the heirs apparent to the catching duo in Boston with Swi being better with the bat and Vaz better with the glove. I've thought for some time that Swihart only needs to get some meaningful playing time behind the plate and he'd be fine back there.
  19. I can see that. It all depends on whether one suffers fools lightly. I don't. Personally I'm glad he's gone because I had him on ignore but that didn't stop others from quoting him, so I couldn't get away from his posts.
  20. Babe (a/k/a BillyWilliams) gets booted last night and today yankee0313 makes his first post. Coincidence?
  21. Everyone has their own way of trying to make their points. While I tend to lean toward the "human" side of the game others rely on statistics. And it's all ok. What works well for me is "Everything in moderation - even moderation." Your results may vary.
  22. IMO it's all about momentum. They're hoping...hoping that Sale will come through in Fenway and that a win there along with a homestand will get this team back on track. Of course, the danger there is that it doesn't work and if that happens we're going to be waiting for some other pitcher to start a winning streak. But IMO it's worth a try!
  23. Please keep in mind that much of what you've posted wasn't really in response to what cp176 was saying, it was a reaction to your frustration toward BW (and maybe the losses). BW served his own purpose here. He trolled by insulting us and our team, and got us fighting among ourselves. In that regard he was a good troll. Now he's gone. Let's move on.
  24. I can't say this enough about BW. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Of course he probably will come back under a different iteration, but in the meantime this will be a better place to be. I've always been a Vazquez 'fan boy', ever since I heard about "pop time" and how quickly he gets the ball to second base. Of course I've always loved players with great arms, probably because I didn't have one. WAR and "trained observers" not withstanding, I tend to put a lot of faith in what I see when it comes to defense. When I see Vaz throw someone out who's trying to steal or I see one of out OF'ers run a long way to get to a ball I think that it was a great play, not, "Oh well, I'll bet the league is full of players who would have made that play". I know I've gone on ad nauseum about defense "stealing" an out with a great defensive play or granting a team an "extra" out by making an error... so I won't do it again. However, I'll say what I've said before, that great defense is often times unrecognized and therefore underrated.
  25. Well, Hallelujah!! Now if we could get everyone else to stop quoting trolls we could clean this board up a bit.
