  1. My concern right now about Price is exactly what it was when we signed him. Price has always been the pitcher who can get you to the playoffs, but not the pitcher who can get you beyond them. I'm hoping this year will be different.
  2. Now that Sandoval is on the road to rehabilitation, is it unreasonable to think that some team needing a 3B might be willing to take a flyer on him and pay 50% (or more) of his salary?
  3. What we need to do next is assign values to intangibles and semi-tangibles like clubhouse influence and a catcher's ability to frame pitches. We can then incorporate them into WAR to determine a player's TRUE VALUE. The next step is to do away with All-Star voting, instead granting All-Star status to the player in each position with the highest New And Improved War Ranking. Players will be paid according to their NAIWR with bonuses for making the All-Star team. At the end of the 162 game season we can plug each variable in the NAIWR for each player on the teams that make the playoffs into a computer and the computer will tell us not only who wins the game, but also develop a play-by-play that can either be animated so it can be watched or we can read it at our own convenience. Now THAT's baseball!! And as Bill Jame's character said on The Simpsons, It'll be about as much fun as doing your taxes!
  4. The thing that surprises me is that the opposing pitchers haven't found the 'hole' in his swing.... if there is one.
  5. I don't see Moncado's future being in the outfield. IMO the three OF spots are pretty well sewed up for the near future. I know there are some folks here who think/want JBJ to be traded but I'd be surprised if that happens. DD likes defense. He gave up one of his highest prospects for Iggy - and certainly not for his offense - and he tried to trade for JBJ when he was in Detroit. So I see JBJ as being as close to untouchable as anyone not named Mookie Betts. Especially with our pitching staff coming around the way it is. When you have David Price AND the (possible) CY award winner on your team as your 1-2 punch you don't go trading away a player like JBJ! Moncada is somewhat "odd man out" right now. There's no room for him in the OF unless it's as a 5th OF, and the only IF spot for him is at 3B. It's a difficult situation for the FO too, in that it'll be difficult to get fair value for him in a trade when other GM's know our situation, and all we need is pitching.
  6. Ironic. DD's team last year vs. DD's team this year. Could it be that this guy is onto something?
  7. IMO it's going to be difficult to NOT give the CY to the winningest pitcher in baseball, whose team also wins their division. Not to say that it's going to be impossible but I see it as Porcillo being the odds-on favorite and everyone else being a long-shot.
  8. It's going to be interesting to see what the FO does about 3B in the off-season. That will give us an idea of how much faith they have in Sandoval.
  9. I don't think there's a bad choice there. They're both going to have to pitch anyway.
  10. And the networks would LOVE IT!
  11. If there's one thing that should have come out of this year it's that if you don't have pitching you don't have much. We've got bats. We need pitching. Would we trade pitching for bats? I hope not!
  12. I couldn't tell for sure but it looked like he barehanded Hanley's toss
  13. Now we need Price to shut them down 1-2-3.
  14. ...and the O's say, "Here we go again :("
  15. I'd refer to it as The Benintendi Effect. They saw it work once and believed it would always work.
  16. I'm more cynical than you are. IMO other owners will hold their nose(s), make any trade that they think will benefit them the most, and hope for the best. I have ZERO faith in the principles of most owners.
  17. So true. When a team will talk about PED abuse being a bane of MLB and in the next breath sign a known PED abuser to a big $$ contract it lets you know that owners will talk out of both sides of their mouth, depending on which side benefits them the most.
  18. Sometimes the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know.
  19. I park in the big lot at Northeastern. It's about a 15 minute walk from the park, but it's through the college and then through that big park where the community gardens are. Since there are always a lot of Northeastern kids going to the games there's always a crowd there, even for a night game. And it's free. It's supposed to be reserved for Northeastern students and parents but the only time I've had any trouble was once when I was going to a game on the same weekend that kids were coming to school in September. Other than that the place is wide open with the only security guard being stationed on the opposite side of the park. And there's always plenty of parking.
  20. You might want to try Ace Tickets too. I've had good luck with them. I went to an early ALDS game in 2013, sat in the Pavilion area and paid about 20% over face. BTW, the Pavilion area is a great place to get a foul ball. I've sat there twice with my (adult) son and both times he's had legitimate shots at balls. The first one was coming right at him when the guy in front of him snagged it, and the second one hit in the seat in front of him and bounced over his hand before someone else got it. Also, have you (or has anyone else) tried Red Sox Replay?
  21. To get back to the original question at hand, is he worth the 2016 option, IMO there's not much doubt about that now. We MAY have been able to use the $13M better elsewhere, or that $13M may have been used to pay the salary of someone who doesn't have 8 wins and has pitched well out of the pen, too. One never knows. What we do know is that Clay has pitched like the Clay of old recently, albeit only for a part of a season - but OTOH we knew that's what we were getting when we signed him for $13M - a part-of-the-season pitcher. His finding himself when he did has made him worth the $13M.
  22. This is why I'm not sold on the idea of spending a lot of money to replace Papi. This team dug themselves a big hole early in the year and now they've dug themselves out of it in the second half. I'm one who believes that present performance is a better indication of future performance than is past performance. Not everyone is going to perform at this level, but at the same time I don't see our pitching staff becoming what it was early in this season. IMO we won't need to outscore everyone else by 100 runs in order to win in 2017.
  23. I think someday we're going to look back on this and say "WTF HAPPENED???" This guy started the season as the heir-apparent to the catching position with GG capabilities and by the end of the season he was in Pawtuckt, playing behind guys like Haloday.
  24. Which makes more sense, Hanley at DH and Swihart (or Shaw) at 1b, or Hanley at 1B and one of those two as DH? You've got the same people in the lineup, and Hanley is not only happy, but he's turned into a respectable 1b. And don't underestimate the value of Hanley being happy vs. Hanely being unhappy.
