Bogaerts might cost more as well. MLBTR predicted 7 yrs $189mill ($27mill AAV) for Bogaerts and 5 yrs $110mill ($22mill AAV) for Nimmo. Given that the Sox could use either one, their roughly equal offensively and one is projected for fewer years at a lower AAV, I do think it’s not a bad idea to replace Bogaerts with Nimmo. Especially since Kike allows for ease of adjusting the lineup…

Why not just sign Nimmo, who is his offensive equal, has OF experience, looks to be significantly cheaper, probably accepts fewer years, and is roughly the same age? The only advantage Bogaerts has is he won’t cost Boston draft picks or IFA capital…

If the idea was to move Kike to SS and sign Nimmo, that’s a clever move OPS+ from 2020 to 2023 Nimmo: 133 Bogaerts: 130 But if Nimmo is only looking at 5 years / $110, you can’t re-sign Bogaerts at that price… That’s a lower AAV than Bogaerts already rejected…

And that there was a subsequent IL trip a short time late does strongly point to a guy who came back too early. If “multiyear” means two years, I’m fine with it. Three years, I’d be hesitant (although beyond complaining about it, my options are limited). Four years or more? Walk away…

I hate long deals, too, but the days of locking up your star players on 6-7 year deals are all but Jurassic at this point. Players like the long term security. The Super High AAV for Very Short Years is a new trend, but I’m not sure it’s any better. If a team gives, say, Jake deGrom a 3 year $120mill deal, and deGrom needs TJ six months later, that takes down a team for multiple seasons in multiple ways…

I liked the QO. Eovaldi lead the AL in fWAR as recently as 2021. If he accepts, I’m fine with it. If he rejects, issues start. I could see a 2 year contract. 3 years? I’m getting hesitant. 4 years could be a bad idea…

Bogaerts didn’t have two years of control last off-season. And the Sox -coming off an ALCS appearance - absolutely should not have dealt anyone for reasons related to contract. For a guy who keeps saying Bloom can’t run this team like it’sTampa, that’s a VERY Tampa-like suggestion…

Eovaldi is the only worthwhile pitcher the Sox have a shot at signing for one year. And all those other pitchers seeking multi year deals aren’t exactly bastions off durability either…

An injury?? As in, just one injury? You underestimate them. That rotation could easily look like a bunch of extras from an episode of M*A*S*H during dress rehearsal. And do it by mid-May…

I think Eovaldi is actually a very underrated as a pitcher when he’s healthy. And there is definite irony in me advocating for him after railing against his last contract. But for 1-2 years, I can deal. Maybe. A rotation of Eovaldi, Sale, Paxton, Pivetta and Whitlock has some potential. Although one more starter to push Whitlock back to the pen would be good. Bello, Mata, Crawford, and Winckowski would be needed as depth barring unforeseen good luck with those five. One more arm to be safe. The bullpen then has Houck, Schreiber, Barnes, Brasier, Taylor, and Kelly. Hopefully they get a starter and push Whitlock back. Or trade Duran for a reliever. Or sign a free agent. Or any combination of those moves…
