    The point was the type of guys needed to get Votto are closer to what it took to get Sale than what it took to get Smith and Thornburg. Shaw, Dubon and Aro does NOT get Votto. Cincinnati is going nowhere, although their farm is better than you give them credit for. But reportedly they get offers for Votto quite frequently and their attitude is they want to keep him and build around him. He is probably the only guy on that team worth paying to see...

    I think players who can hit into their 40s are a very rare breed. Since steroids have been weened from the game, we've returned to a time where aging players can decline rapidly and with no warning. Ortiz was more the exception than the rule...

    Why would a rental be so bad? You get to keep your better prospects and move to the front of the line to negotiate for 2018. A controllable veteran power bat will likely cost Groome and Chavis and possibly Travis as well...

    A snag wouldn't be surprising. The Yankees have a ton of really good prospects, but Cashman is doing his best Ben Cherington impression and making too many untouchable. Nothing kills trade talks faster than hearing "No, you can't have the guy you want."

    Boras won't ask for $20 million for Bogaerts. Arbitration is an either/or situation. If Boras submits $20mill , he'd better be able to prove to a neutral third party Xander is worth that much, otherwise the Sox practically have a Carte Blanche to give Xander as little as possible within the guidelines. Boras is more likely to ask for $7-10 mill. Something he can make a case for.

    I don't like the Shaw trade as much as anyone, but when you make a sweeping generalization about not trading prospects for relievers and cite Bagwell as the reason, you probably need to also realize you're now advocating for getting Manny Margot back....

    Several years ago, then Cubs manager Dusty Baker ripped color man Steve Stone on an airplane and complained about Stone to ownership. That was Stone's last season doing Cubs' games. Did you hear about it?
