    2017 seems to be the Year of the Former Elite Prospect First Baseman Bust. Morrison, Smoak and Alonso all finally breaking out. But will any have staying power?

    Lackey is certainly a candidate for the best free agent signing since Manny. But that proves the point. He signed a 5 year deal, was awful for the first two, missed the third year altogether, and then bounced back nicely just in time to start working on his next contract. Is THAT the ceiling for free agency? Since Manny, the Sox have dropped about $1billion ( total guess with no real research, but probably not too unrealistic) on free agents with very limited results...

    An infield of Devers, Pedroia, Bogaerts and Machado would be outstanding.

    Unless the Sox collapse and miss the post-season, I'd be surprised if Farell isn't managing this team in April, 2018. I make no such guarantee for May, 2018..

    It's also possible there is more to that whole situation than we know. What if Pedroia told his teammates NOT to retaliate against Machado? Maybe he wanted the whole situation to not escalate like it did. And then Barnes would have acted on his own. Usually retaliation HBPs happen right away at the first opportunity. That it didn't happen before Barnes got in the game might be somewhat significant...

    Pedroia's best days are past, but in an era where fans complain that the Sox let internal guys go snd bring in (less productive) players from other teams, I am glad they retained Pedroia. Although I do think your dislike of Pedroia seems to have taken a new life as a running joke...

    Well, mvp has his consistent tirades against Pedroia. In fact, Pedroia seems to get a lot more crap than he probably deserves. Price is certainly also very unpopular right now...

    Not to mention that this perceived flaw in Eckersley is based on the fact that he has admitted some mistakes and taken steps to correct them...

    Overall the strategy should hopefully be to avoid the big money free agents. Just because the Sox are able to reset the Luxury Tax penalties doesn't mean they are reset forever. Not to mention, free agency is such a losing venture. Basically it usually involves paying way too much money for what a player did on another team. Most free agents are on the wrong side of 30 and their better day are gone by. Since the Sox signed Manny Ramirez to his deal in 2000, 17 years ago, who has been the most productive free agent this team has signed?

    The 1b market is weak. The best source of power might well be Mark Reynolds. But really the Sox still have Hanley and Swihart for 1b, and could just sign DH. Former Dombrowski reclamation project JD Martinez is a good guess...

    Sure I addressed it. You had a position that managers really don't matter. I don't agree, but it wasn't intended to be snarky so much as clarifying potential inconsistencies. And I don't believe change for the sake of change ever works. But that's not the same as saying change never works. Now if Dombrowski's goal is to change culture or something like that, I would agree that isn't change for the sake of change, rather change with a specific goal in mind. He might do that.

    I read what you wrote. I do disagree about change for the sake of change. I'd say it rarely works out, if ever. I so think Farrell is more secure than many realize. If he wins two straight pennants, the second one coming in a season where a major piece (David Price) is a complete non-factor, it's not likely even a quick playoff exit gets him fired....

    I thought you believed all managers were essentially fungible. If so, what would be the point in firing Farrell and replacing him with another guy who "adds no value"?

    Now if the Sox can find a better manager using whatever their criteria is, that's one thing. But "Hey let's try this guy and hope it works" usually doesn't give the anticipated result...

    And sometimes firing the manager can have a VERY negative effect. The 2011 Red Sox dominated the AL East for five months before a horrific collapse. They brought back basically the same team in 2012, but without Francona, and played so poorly through August that they had a late season fire sale on their way to last place...

    I doubt they fire the manager if they win back-to-back AL East pennants, regardless of post-season performance. If he managed to keep his job through a GM change while the team was in last place, he's more secure than you realize....

    He holds very little value. Any team that wants him, which won't be very badly, will be more than willing to see if he becomes a minor league free agent. Sox backup catcher is probably his most likely future...
