  1. Best record might at least add the element of making the last game or two important for a team that has already clinched. Now not only do they need to ensure best record for their own league, but the other league as well. I guess a good question here is why do people so readily accept using best record to determine home field in the LCS but question it for the World Series?
  2. Yet the NBA and NFL use that same method with no complaints...
  3. On the other hand, there may be a bullpen crunch. Kimbrel, Kelly, and Barnes have spots. Barring injuries, one of the six starters (Wright?) takes a fourth. If the Sox add two relievers - and other than a DH, what else will they add? - that leaves one bullpen slot for Abad, Ross, Elias and Hembree. None can be demoted without clearing waivers. Even if the Sox only add one reliever, that probably means Abad and Ross grab the last two spots. Elias' chances of making the Sox might be too dependent on the health of everyone else. Ditto Hembree...
  4. Sandoval went into ST as the favorite, but came out of ST deposed and hidden away on the DL all year. And I think the whole thing was someone giving him a season long "timeout". But the names Sandoval, Shaw and Holt were all options last year. This year they will fight or the honor of holding down the fort until Moncada's Super Two date passes...
  5. Now HERE is your depth http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/12/padres-non-tender-tyson-ross-five-others.html While Sox fans are wondering why the team won't go out and get rehabbing AAAA arms like Brandon Workman and Rubby de la Rosa, the Padres have put rehabbing Tyson Ross and Erik Johnson (who I believe is not rehabbing anything) back on the market...
  6. Yeah that made so much more sense. I think home field advantage should go to whichever team has more players named "Logan." If neither team has a Logan, then the tiebreaker shall be number of Chads...
  7. Not to mention, before using the All Star game, home field was determined in the World Series and in both LCS by alternating years. This was the dumbest method of all. And least fair, because teams in the AL East and NL West could NEVER have home field throughout the entire post-season....
  8. More of a TJ candidate...
  9. There really isn't all that much risk. Not many pitchers who missed all of 2015 are going to grab the attention of other teams, and the ones who do will be pitchers with more talent and experience than Brandon Workman. While the Sox do need AAA pitching depth, Brandon Workman himself may not be a necessity. And he isn't even gone yet, either...
  10. But if the Sox re-sign him to a minor league deal, they get back a 40-man roster spot. Really Workman is in the same price range, talent and experience level as a lot of other pitchers who are or will be free agents very soon. There is no rush to act here...
  11. No different than last year. Except now maybe Moncada is in the mix...
  12. Well, they know they have someone who hasn't pitched since 2014. I'd be surprised if they offered him arbitration. But I wouldn't be surprised if they non-tendered him and brought him back on a minor league deal. As he hasn't pitched in so long, it's not like exposing him to free agency will guarantee a lot of better offers from other teams...
  13. I'd actually be surprised if the Sox did anything at all about third base. We have Sandoval, Shaw, Holt and possibly Moncada in the mix. All have flaws, but all have had good stretches there as well (except Moncada so far). The need for a 3B might be more in the eyes of the fans than the front office...
  14. McCutchen never said he wouldn't move to LF. He said he'd be willing to talk about a position change "at the right time." Despite his poor scores on defensive metrics last season, McCutchen still feels he is capable of playing center, and that position is where hr is most comfortable. While there could br debate there, he does appear to realize a move to a corner will be inevitable at some point ..
  15. Of course we needed a pitcher. At then time of that deal, the Sox were a second place team that had a rotation featuring both Felix Doubront snd Brandon Workman...
  16. Maybe MLB will get rid of some of their other stupid rules, like actually playing under the same rules in both leagues.
  17. Oh good. They decided to make it even more complicated.
  18. Well if there was ever a year to not be able to afford free agents, this is it. I'm hoping they get involved with some of the better non-closing relievers like Ziegler and the underrated Daniel Hudson. If they do that, they potentially have sufficient trade chips to get a DH on the trading block. It certainly wouldn't be a bat with the same potential impact as Encarnacion, but a reasonable alternative might be found, even if it's just a LHH to platoon with Young. ( I do hate platoons. )
  19. Hos floor is pretty low, as he isn't Bradley or Betts defensively. I think he'll be a good player and the biggest question id "when"? Will he be one right away? Or need some time?
  20. Were there any changes to the massively flawed Qualifying Offer system?
  21. ...apparently removed homevfield advantage in the World Series from being linked tovthe All Star game and instead now awards it to the team with the most wins!!
  22. Bottom line - Swihart will be starting, very likely at catcher, wherever he is. Not likely Boston, but Pawtucket or another organization are both in play here. Hope the Sox keep him, but he absolutely is a good trade target for another team. Personally I hate platoons. But in the wake of the Luxury Tax threshold I could see the Sox using one at DH this year. I don't consider it likely, but can't see how it isn't on the radar. ..
  23. I've always said a team needs 7-10 starting pitchers before the season starts, and really, even that number can be a little light. As it stands now, I don't think Dombrowski is going to add to the MLB rotation. But i do hope he adds to the depth of the PPawtucket rotation. I haven't given up on Owens or Johnson yet, but I would like to see the Sox push both a little further back on the depth chart. And do so with more than just Sean O'Sullivan. ...
  24. Sarcasm? That's not even remotely how sarcasm works. And if not all insults are attacks on character, that's a distinction I'd like to hear. Tell you what - you explain the difference between "insult" and "attacks on character" to me, and I'll explain how sarcasm works to you. And for free, I'll throw in the difference between "projecting" and "predicting." And then maybe I will also even explain how you're being a dick, although I'm worried that's a little too much all at once...
  25. Right. It cuts into your busy schedule of wishing death on people with addiction issues and trying to convince the rest of the world the phrase "fat slob" is purely related to a physical condition and not an insult in any way...
