  1. Are opt out clauses really a selling point any more? Hasn't this maddeningly frustrating off season destroyed their appeal? Is JD really talking to Arizona and saying " this of season has totally sucked and been completely disappointing. Any way we can make sure my contract let's me do it again in two years? "
  2. Cheaper DH options ranked by OPS+ over the last 3 seasons Lucas Duda 119 Eric Hosmer 119 Mike Moustakas 117 Danny Valencia 113 Logan Morrison 111 Carlos Gonzalez 106 Eduardo Nunez 106 Jon Lucroy 102 Mitch Moreland 101 Based on expected salary, years, draft compensation, who is the best option if it isn't JD?
  3. That's a cop out. I even tried to provide a definition of clutch that didn't involve metrics. It was basically "performing better in key situations" but this was rejected because nothing could back any alleged clutch hitters performing do (although I also offered the only example I could think of - Pat Tabler)....
  4. It clearly is different if you think mental toughness is the same as leadership. Personally I don't think you can spot mental toughness by watching a game on TV and the best you can do is attribute positive results top to it. To me that says that if you don't get the results you want, that player is clearly not mentally tough. So much like clutch, leadership and mental toughness clearly have no definition, and can only be spotted by people on this board who don't know what they are.
  5. "Intangible" doesn't mean "can't be defined."
  6. The Sox would be better off extending Betts and Bogaerts rather than signing Hosmer. ..
  7. What does mental toughness have to go with leadership? Those are two mutually exclusive attributes. Not all leaders are mentally tough and not everyone who is mentally tough is a leader. ..
  8. But can you explain it at all?
  9. This whole "needs a leader" strikes me as more sports journalism BS along the lines of"team chemistry" or"team identity". None of us have a clue what goes on behind the scenes. It's one thing to say "this team needs power. " You can back that up wIth plenty of facts and starts. And really, the only counterargument is whether or not you can find an alternative to power, like more pitching, as a better way to win. But all this other stuff is guesswork as to whether or not it's a problem and how to quantify it.
  10. Sox are two time defending AL EAst champions. Patriots have been in the last two Super Bowls and three of the last four, with 2 wins. The Celtics are easily the best run team in the NBA right now. Exactly what is so bad about Boston sports?
  11. What Yankee fans refuse to acknowledge was they had to outspend just to keep the Core Four. The only other team that even had as many as four players stay on their team for the between 1996 and 2001 was the Braves. Other teams produced star players, but they couldn't afford to retain them all like NY did. And NY still went on to spend heavily to bring in other big names like Giambi, Mussina, Johnson, etc....
  12. But if they are committing errors by being overly aggressive, isn't that a type of "fire" people say they lacked? For the most part, this is one of those criticisms I think people throw around when they don't know why the team didn't win it all, like about 90% of all managerial criticisms. The Sox are two-time defending AL East champions. While this off-season has been an atrocity of ennui, they are still a good team.
  13. Not true under the old CBA where free agents cost you first round picks....
  14. Epsstein won in 2004 with a largely inherited MLB team (but he did add Ortiz) and no farm system whatsoever. He built the farm while winning and was not the guy who decimated it.
  15. Wasn't Jackie Robinson the first African American to achieve the rank of lieutenant in the army? I know he was among the first admitted to Officer Candidate School (after a lengthy protest)...
  16. Name a GM who doesn't have to overspend after 7 or 8 years of drafting 30th or lower. Hint: Don't say Cashman. I also want to know what you mean by always has issues on the back end of a build. How many times has that really happened?
  17. We still don't have anyone I would call a cleanup hitter. Our other weakness was signing Mitch Moreland because he was a defensive wizard, a tough competitor and always had his head in the game. The Sox had some elite defenders at first recently in Youkilis and Napoli, and Moreland was not their peer. Also I questioned how much his head was in the game at times, most notably in that triple play in Baltimore. Thankfully it was only a one year deal. Unless Moreland becomes our biggest acquisition of this off-season. ...
  18. Absolutely. But he shines over other GMs at spotting the unrecognized talent in opposing systems and getting it for practically nothing. Or, in some cases, actually getting it for nothing...
  19. What's your point? That Epstein realized Darvish was a good pitcher and somehow managed to sneak him on to thr roster while everyone else was napping? He got Darvish because he had a lofty budget. No baseball intuition required here. Unlike when he got the other pitchers I mentioned. Or brought Ortiz to Boston....
  20. This is true. Hopefully he can bring some decent talent to this organization like that...
  21. Theo's strength was never ponying up big money for guys like Darvish. Any GM can do that if they have a budget. Theo's strength was finding guys like Jake Arrieta and Kyle Hendricks and getting them for essentially nothing. Can Dombrowski do that?
  22. Again you focus on the end of integration. I'd go on but this thread is really getting off topic if I do....
  23. Apparently the new way is to bring back the exact same team and farm system from the year before. You have to like the way Dombrowski has made absolute certain no new talent has managed to sneak in anywhere, He's like a watch dog...
  24. Cobb, Lynn and Darvish are all big health risks very likely to sit out a full season on their next deal. Pass on all four. Just sign Tillman for some depth. ..
  25. Sign Tillman (bad year but AL East vet), and try to get Hellickson, Buchholz, Jesse Chavez, Trevor Cahill, Hector Santiago and /or Anibal Sanchez to minor league deals. Two or three of them should be sufficient
