  1. That's not how it works in the NFL. The only option is to hold out, and while MLB rarely sees that issue, it has happened, notably in the 1990-1991 off-season when both reigning MVP's Rickey Henderson and Barry Bonds held out....
  2. Given no budget limits, I'd like to see all of them back except Moreland, who I'm a bit indifferent on. Of course, I can only judge him as an MLB first baseman and not as a teammate...
  3. That's how we got Lars Anderson...
  4. Does winning in 2018 justify all the moves that were made to build that club? "We might have won with different players or we might have won with different trades but those are just 'might's. Yes, the farm is weak and there aren't the players we'd like to have to fill positions in the next couple of years but I'll live with that every day for the 2018 season and the World Series Championship." Just substitute farm system for defensive shortstop, and is that statement still accurate? Not sure why people think it's horribly incorrect to appreciate the title, but critisize some of the moves that got you there. That's OK. But be consistent about it. (I didn't like the Peavy trade, either. I wanted to see the Sox just deal Middlebrooks directly to the White Sox for Peavy and keep Iglesias at 3b.)
  5. Was he talking about the baseball team?
  6. I'd have more faith in the Brewers if Yelich was playing...
  7. It's even funnier when we ask him to apply the same logic to the Jake Peavy trade...
  8. Personal guess - not a lot. Maybe Dalbec and Hernandez...
  9. If JD opting out means keeping Betts, is it a bad thing?
  10. Yes and how much of that will come from the farm system?
  11. If you like depleted, that's fine. Right now the Sox are trying to cut their payroll but have limited minimum wage players ready to step in. That can be devastating...
  12. No? You do realize you have to consider how a prospect is valued at the time and not necessarily their subsequent MLB career, which is usually an unknown at the time of a trade. I would say trading away Espinoza, who was a BA top 20 prospect, certainly had a negative effect on the farm...
  13. OK,and how would you describe the present state of the farm?
  14. As a Sox fan, you should know enough to have faith in Jacoby...
  15. Complaining about Kimbrel trade, which I did that day. Acknowledging the Pomeranz, Eovaldi, and Sale trades left a devastated farm. As you are positioning yourself as not complaining about the farm, are you saying Dombrowski didn't bankrupt it and all is well? And we have a steady stream of minimum wage MLB talent ready to fill a few gaps?
  16. Why don't you count? Are you one of those who insists that bringing up the state of the farm is complaining?
  17. As opposed to you Colts fans who cry every year
  18. It is possible the Sox wanted Benintendi because they didn't really know where to play Moncada. Pedroia was supposed to lock up 2b and possible they had enough faith in Devers to handle 3B, coupled with no outfield talent on the horizon after Benintendi...
  19. Rabble rouser. Although I'm not sure why saying DD decimated the farm has to be considered complaining. It seems like a fact to me. We all saw it happen. And it does have repercussions today...
  20. It's not about the AAV, but the total. It makes more sense for Martinez to opt out after 2020, and Boras knows this. JD might be able to get more than $60mill this year, but he will easily get more than $38mill next year...
  21. Because his options are limited in that respect?
  22. Fair point. But no trading Holt! Not even for Leon!
  23. That’s speculation on both fronts. JD likely loses money if he opts out this year. Being traded - which is not a doublecross - doesn’t change his earnings. Boras has a reputation for being all about the money. Why would he advise his client to take less money?
  24. Yes they might completely forego outfield defense and put Upton and Ohtani/Martinez in the corners. Of course their biggest need is pitching, which is probably where they will do their spending. That need will be magnified if they use that outfield alignment...
  25. Of course they would have to unload Brandon Belt first..
