  1. Then f*** them. They are not getting Mookie Betts, a first round comp pick, saving $33mill and holding their best prospects. That’s why they’re stuck paying their fourth outfielder the third highest salary on the team and doomed to finish no higher than third in a weak NL West, and Preller is going to get fired. But hey, when you spend all your cash on Wil Myers and Eric Hosmer to the point where you can’t afford Mookie Betts, maybe you should get fired...
  2. Bottom line is, per your post yesterday, other teams are interested in Betts and Price now. Whether or not I guess the teams is immaterial. Bloom just needs to talk to any interested party...
  3. If they take on Betts and Price and send back Myers, they don’t take on $58mill. They add $36-ish mill...
  4. Twins are out. Graterol isn’t going anywhere...
  5. Yeah that should make them competitive with a Dodger lineup including Betts...
  6. So you think the Padres would be smarter paying a Myers $61 mil to sit on the bench rather than a net payment of $9mill to Price to pitch? At some point before Myers’ contract is up, the Padres will be paying a SP $10mill. Possibly next season. The Padres played hard ball with Price’s contract. But it’s the smart move for them to take it if it means unloading a Myers. Because no way Bloom takes that deal on in a Betts trade without pillaging their farm....
  7. Why? When we acquired Kimbrel a year later, he was a “Hall of Fame closer”...
  8. I look at it this way. The Padres NEED to dump Myers. He’s their most expensive outfielder by far, and he isn’t even starting. And no one else is going to step in and take him off their hands. Betts and Price for Myers, Quantrill, Campusano and Cronenworth. No money. The Sox actually do better vs the luxury tax than they did in the Dodger trade. The Padres get Betts and Price becomes a 2-2.5 fWAR starter for a net cost of $9mill per year, which is cheaper than free agency. The Red Sox get a catching prospect, a young SP, a 2b/SS prospect Bloom knows from Tampa, and, well, Myers. Oh well. Gotta take the bad with the good, I guess. But because Myers AAV is so low, the Red Sox actually get about $1.2 mill further from the tax limit than they did in the Dodger trade. Also, Preller gets to thumb his nose at Friedman...
  9. Relax . Still time. Remember when the Braves traded Kimbrel less than 48 hours before opening day?
  10. I don’t think it’s a bug stretch that the Padres get involved again...
  11. Unless Mookie decides that, if he can get a 4 with only one team bidding, maybe he can get a 5 in free agency...
  12. And the Red Sox could talk to other teams, including the division rivals Padres and Diamondbacks...
  13. That’s ok. Neither would Mookie...
  14. I do wonder if Bloom wants Gonsolin. I can’t imagine the Dodgers balking there, unless they need to unload Maeda’s $3mill AAV to stay within their budget here...
  15. Why do the Red Sox look bad here? The Twins were the ones trying to pawn off an injured pitcher. And according to some reports, this deal falling apart has motivated a couple other teams to inquire about Mookie and, in some cases, Price...
  16. So your laughable claim is Mookie is being mistreated by the Red Sox, who are clearly showing they don’t appreciate him because they will not make him the highest paid athlete in the history of professional sports while also paying heavy league fines for no reason as well? So are the Dodgers the team that respects and appreciates Betts in this scenario? The team saying “we want Mookie, but not enough to give up these unproven minor leaguers.” What do you think Mookie thinks about that? If your whole point is Mookie’s feelings, how do you suppose he’d answer the question “Hey Mookie, the Dodgers want you but want Gavin Lux more. What do you think? Also, same thing for Dustin May. Thoughts? Know what? They also won’t give up Keibert Ruiz for you despite his being blocked for the next five years. Does this feel like the respect you deserve? That the Dodgers value Keibert Ruiz as a backup catcher over you?”
  17. You do realize which side has been more difficult when it comes to reaching an agreement?
  18. No rotation help between Boston and Mata. Dalbec absolutely lacks the mobility for 2b. But the defensive requirements of the position are in flux. Rather than being capable of making up range for slower, behemoth-like first baseman, 2bmen now spend between 1/3 and 1/4 of their time in short right field, where quickness means less but a strong arm means more. Also, while I expect Dalbec would be less agile, if he can take advantage of his 6’4” frame, he can make up for some lack of range. And if he flops, Pawtucket loses a couple more games. Low risk. But yeah, I suspect he plays mostly, if not solely 1b this year...
  19. I don’t like using rookies as weak side platoon options, unless that rookie has a low ceiling. Dalbec does need a new position, since (hopefully) 3b is locked up for a while. If this trade happens and Verdugo locks up RF, 1b is a good option. Although trying something radical like 2b would be my first try (in Pawtucket, of course)...
  20. If there are surprise adds, how are we supposed to know? That would defeat the whole purpose...
  21. Hey if I’m Arizona or Cincinnati or Atlanta, why would I just let Betts go to the Dodgers?
  22. How long does it take to decide “slider, low and away”?
  23. Lack of starting pitching would be the primary reason...
  24. Mostly laugh at the analogy...
  25. Because paying him, say $40 million this year means paying $78 mill counting luxury tax (assuming $20 mill overage). If the Sox reset, paying him $40 mill next year means paying $47mill (assuming same overage).
