    Sale has not been his dominant self since the end of last season and to some extent through the playoffs. It seems it is probably a physical issue. It really isn't surprising. I think there is still hope for improvement but it may first require shutting him down.

    You have to get on base first. Aggression won't do that. Kicking butts won't do that. Getting tough won't do that. If Betts is a superstar then it is up to him to perform like one. I would think that winning a championship and seeing huge contracts signed by other superstars would be sufficient motivation. No manager can change that. Sometimes player performance is a mystery.

    So do you think that part of Cora's plan was to not have Leon on the team? Or was it strictly an upper management decision? Remember last season when Hanley was dumped? Was that part of the Cora plan or strictly upper management? Cora's plan does need to take into consideration the personnel he has and their role in his plan.

    I don't see how you come to this conclusion. Our GM/President does not necessarily keep tabs on the physical condition of every player nor how it might impact their performance. Not everything related to the physical aspect of athletic performance is clear cut.

    I'm panicking. Last season was too perfect. This start is the polar opposite. But as only the Rays have started off strong in the East, my panic is tempered. The division could be a dogfight with no dominant team. Might not take another perfect season to win the division.

    Sale has not been himself since July 2018. I am not surprised by his bad start this season. Could very well be physical issues.

    The 2018 Red Sox go down as the greatest champions in team history. They were unrelenting in the post season. It was a true team championship. I wasn't surprised by how good a manager Cora is, as I always thought he was one of the smartest players ever to come off the Red Sox bench. This was a perfect season. A dream season. And David Price emerged as a true ace, both in the regular season and especially it in the World Series. We can never question his heart again. Vindication!

    What some also forget is that Buckner was hobbling badly and was usually replaced defensively by Dave Stapleton when the Sox had a lead at the end of the game. Manager John McNamara got sentimental and wanted Buckner to be in the game for the victory and abandoned his strategy from earlier wins in the series.

    Kimbrel is better on average, but was he better last night? Kimbrel was the worst pitcher for the Red Sox last night.

    For last nights game, Kimbrel was not better than any other alternative. He came close to blowing the game. Another pitcher could have done a better job. It was a 3 run lead, not really a high pressure situation. The only pressure was due to the batters coming up. After Kimbrel walked Judge, he had demonstrated he was not the right pitcher for the situation. After he gave up a single to Gregorious, he did the same. After Kimbrel walked Voit to load the bases he demonstrated he was not the right pitcher for the situation because he put the tying run on base. After Kimbrel hit Walker with a pitch to drive in a run, he put the winning run on base. How any manager could have a feel that Kimbrel could do the job at this point is beyond reason. Cora became a spectator and almost watched the game slip away.

    Yes, I have no beef with him starting the ninth, nor does the OP. The beef is with him finishing the ninth seemingly only because he is designated as the closer. There was no urgency or even thinking ahead by Cora at that point. This was a series clinching game. Kimbrel was failing to do his job. Someone should have been warming in in the pen at the start of the inning. Cora should have been proactive instead of putting himself in a spot where he could only be reactive.

    Kelly isn't scared of anything. Every pitcher in our pen has the guts to come out and get outs when called on.

    I am absolutely on board with everything in the OP. It was 2003 all over again. Cora should have had two pitchers warming in the pen at the start of the ninth. This was not managed with the urgency required for a clinching game. Overall I think Cora is a good to sometimes great manager. But leaving Kimbrel out there with his inability to find the strike zone was a huge mistake. If not for some Yankees hitters chasing bad pitches and a fantastic bang bang play by Nunez and Pearce the Yankees would have stolen a game that should never have gotten so close. Kimbrel does not have to close out every win; any pitcher who is able to throw strikes and get outs should be utilized to do the job as the game situation dictates.

    So it really wasn't standing still at all. It was the beginning of the transition to the young home grown players who are now the core of the team. They were stuck with players from the 2013 team who weren't part of the future and also weren't really assets to trade to get any real return. 2013 was unique season from a collection of players who had great performances that were not sustainable.

    The 2014 team was one in transition with young players just emerging. It was not the same team as 2013.

    This comment kind of points out why he had detractors. He was apparently talented but it wasn't reflected in the kind of numbers usually associated with that. It was a case of a good player whose performance and numbers didn't appear to many to meet the level of expectation of his perceived talent.

    Sales being very good may not cut it against the teams in the playoffs. I don't feel panic, but realistically I'm not expecting much from Sale. I would not be shocked if he gets lit up.

    I think the concern for how Sale will perform in the playoffs is justified. I think he will be back to his old dominant self eventually, but wonder if it will be on time to win a championship.

    As long as that wrist contusion doesn't bother him. Price has been the ace of the staff since Sale went down.

    Borrowing from Kevin Cash. Cash is a really good manager. I thought so last season and now look what he has the Rays doing.

    Cora blew the game last night by not having anyone warm up while Kimbrel was obviously struggling to find the plate. I was watching it talking to him through the TV to get someone warmed up but he didn't respond. Good thing the Sox won. Past two games demonstrate that on field decisions are absolutely crucial to the results of a game.

    I think Cora should lose on purpose to the Yankees now to set them up for September.

    Yeah, improved hitting makes boneheaded plays seem less boneheaded.
