    On paper, they are still lagging behind on pitching/defense compared to some of the other WC contenders. The numbers thus far tell the story. This team is a WC contender at best, and they have real competition for that which should be taken seriously.

    All that should not matter. You do what is the smartest thing to do to improve the team. Maybe doing little is the smart move. They do have to look ahead and decide who they are willing to pay and who they are not.

    Both Kinsler and Pearce are too old to sign. Should have been looking for a top tier 2b to replace Pedroia about 2 seasons ago. The rest of Pedroia's contract is a cost to be absorbed. Holt and Nunez are strictly bench strength, not starting 2b.

    Sarcasm? Sox will likely not try to trade Betts, but eventually he may price himself out of Boston. Someone called JD an enigma, but Betts seems to better fit that description. There is a huge gap between his performance last season and the rest of his career. He is very talented and an all around good player, but its hard to really say how good he is. He might be more like Yaz in some ways than Willie Mays, as he was sometimes being likened too. It is not easy to predict his performances year to year.

    I don't agree. Our offense is fine, but our pitching /defense doesn't match up with most of the other WC contenders other than Texas. I don't expect the Rangers to stay in contention. But the others are succeeding due to their better pitching/defense.

    Sale is not really an enigma. He started having physical problems last season. He still wasn't right when the 2019 season opened. He may be declared healthy now but physical decline and age take a toll on all athletes, no matter how great. A lot of these guys tough it out and say they are fine, but it takes time to really get back into their full stride. I think that injuries and their lasting impact are underestimated. a player says he's fine and we expect him to return to what he was too soon. Give Sale more time, and we'll see what he really has left in the tank. Look at the struggles David Price went through before he finally showed what he could do to lift a team to a championship,. and Price doesn't throw as hard as he used to. Age and injury are the two things that eventually erode the talents of even the greatest players.

    No, that isn't about it. Teams started using top relievers earlier in games and went away from going from lesser relievers hoping to hold on until the closer could appear in the ninth. Bullpens have less specialists and more hard throwers that are easy to mix and match. The reason starters pitch less innings is to keep the hitters from seeing them more than twice in a game. There has been a major change in how entire pitching staffs are used, with less reliance on starters and more reliance on a parade of hard throwing relievers.

    Sox could have saved the Pearce money anyway, and tried harder to find other good arms for the bullpen. As for comparisons to 2003, the use of bullpens has changed dramatically since then. Heck, the use of pitching staffs has changed dramatically. Were there ever any starters by committee in 2003?

    I'm hoping the trip to London throws the Yankees off. The Sox are already floundering, so it can't impact them as much.

    Well, they are terrible. How far they have fallen. They used to be able to give the Sox the occasional black eye. Now they are doormats.

    You are right. The numbers don't lie. The AL West is superior to the AL East so far this season.

    I am not a fickle fan. I did not get overly excited about Pearce's or Eovaldi's future potential with the team just because they had a great postseason. Fickle can cut both ways. Some fans get overly excited about short term success. I was a Middlebrooks detractor when many fans thought he was the next big thing. I have thought Pedroia was finished since about two season ago, and I think he is a great player. I said to be patient with JBJ this season. I wanted Leon over Swihart. Sometimes I am right and sometimes wrong in my assessments, but it's not because I'm a fickle fan. So enough of the fans are fickle arguments as we all are just fans here, evaluating from a distance.

    Yet there was never any reason to expect anything from either of them. They were late season additions that we got lucky with. Their track records indicate they will not be capable of repeating what they did in the short term over an entire season. They are similar to Nunez, who gets everyone excited for brief stretches but is really just a decent bench player at best.

    I would count the Yankees out if they were performing like the Sox are. I would be worried that they might make it by the Wild Card.

    If he's worried about aggravating his back, it could effect his hitting. I don't think his playing the field means that his back issues have disappeared.

    Chances are very good he will finish the season above .700. It's what he does.

    Both signings were a gamble. Neither player has a track record suggesting that they would continue their amazing postseason performances. I really didn't think they would sign Pearce. The Eovaldi signing made a bit more sense, but they knew of his physical issues. I now think both signings were mistakes, and they should have looked at other areas to improve, like the bullpen. They probably just caught lightning in a bottle. I love what both of them did to win the team a championship, but realistically you can't expect to duplicate it with those players.

    As I advised, being patient with JBJ paid off. This is who he is. His value is as a great defensive player who eventually finds his groove as power bat.

    No way is he 100% physically. His back problems are the cause of his performance issues. He was cruising along great until his back acted up.

    Meanwhile, Mookie is having a mediocre June, albeit hitting for a bit more power than he did in May. The only thing he is consistently doing well is getting on base. He is taking walks at a good rate.

    I don't share your optimism. I think it is going to be a very competitive wild card race. The only way they compete for the division is if the Yankees collapse, which seems unlikely. I still think the Sox are strong contenders for a wild card spot, and that is being as optimistic as I can manage.

    Sox are losing a little ground in a very competitive WC race. They have to start playing better at home, where they now have a losing record. Maybe a long road trip would help.

    Stop making me agree with a Yankees fan. Last season was a perfect storm of absolutely great performances from Mookie and JD. They have dropped off much more than I expected, as has Chris Sale to this point in the season. But if they make the playoffs, I still like their chances.
