  1. And if we had Miller, the Kimbrel trade likely wouldn't have been necessary, meaning we'd still have Margot, et. al. Despite the protestations around the time of the trade that Margot was hopelessly blocked in Boston and never would have played for us no matter what, having him ready to step into CF would be pretty convenient right about now if we wanted to trade JBJ for a starting pitcher.
  2. No one has mentioned the promotion of Eddie Romero to assistant GM, which I liked. IMO Dombrowski has shown a preference for promoting talent from within the organization, though it's not possible to keep everyone for reasons that MVP mentioned. All in all, I'm not terribly concerned as long as they continue to replace quality with quality.
  3. My residual goodwill for Theo (and Lester and Lackey), and the Cubs' young core just being exciting as hell, more than outweighs any Maddon distaste for me. Would like to see the Cubs finally break the curse, though I'll be pretty happy either way with this outcome.
  4. Absolutely. I just bring up Montas because he's the other piece in that trade that everyone seems to forget about.
  5. That decision is really a fascinating exercise in what might have been. We wouldn't have Bradley and Swihart if we'd re-signed Beltre and kept Youk at first, but on the other hand, we'd still have Rizzo.
  6. This. I mean, I liked Iggy as much as the next guy, and I realize this wasn't the trade of the century for the Red Sox or anything, but out of all the players we've let go in recent years, he really isn't one I stay up at night pining for. Hot take: we may rue the loss of Frankie Montas more than Iglesias in the long run.
  7. Lol, we really need a thread just for the Peavy trade.
  8. Isn't it a rather big indictment of Dombrowski that after committing $217 million to one starter and trading a top 15-20 prospect in MLB for another, we still have a sizable group that believes the offseason would be incomplete without adding a TOTR type (or two, in Slasher's case)?
  9. http://www.espn.com/blog/boston/red-sox/post/_/id/51326/mike-hazens-departure-could-have-widespread-fallout-for-red-sox Even if the Red Sox GM is just a puppet in the Dombrowski era, I'd rather have a veteran of the Theo/Ben years giving DD advice than someone like Frank Wren...but I doubt the big picture philosophy will change either way.
  10. With Papi departing and question marks hovering over 3B, I think we need a hitter significantly more than we need a starting pitcher. Relief, sure...but if we go into next year with Price, Porcello, Pomeranz, Rodriguez, and Wright (or possibly Buchholz if you like) as our starting five , then there are far worse rotations in MLB, and I'm not sure we'll be able to significantly improve on that group without paying a painful price.
  11. Are we that down on Moncada after 20 plate appearances when he probably shouldn't have even been in the majors yet? For me he's still in the "Not trading unless a dream scenario comes along" category.
  12. Eh, I seem to be in the minority here, but that feels like too much to give for an aging, very expensive, and possibly declining Felix. Moncada, Swihart, Kopech++ probably gets them Sale or Quintana, or at least pretty close.
  13. One does not simply move Bogaerts to third base. [also couldn't resist]
  14. I agree on both counts. I think that kind of goes without saying at this point, doesn't it?
  15. The way I see it, the Pomeranz trade was made to essentially set the starting five for the next two years without giving up Moncada or any of the B's. Unless the Pomeranz health news is worse than we know (and I see no reason to believe that right now), I doubt we see any sort of major trade for a starting pitcher. As for Bradley, I think his "streakiness" is being a bit overstated here...he had an OPS of .731 or better every month but August, and I'd even take his second-half slash line of .233/.315/.412 any day of the week. Sure, if someone makes an offer you listen, but it's tough to move a player like that without simply opening up another hole for yourself to fill. (I'm still not sold that moving Swihart to left is a solution, but that's another argument.)
  16. So what's the difference between this thread and "Realistic View of 2017"? Anyway, I don't think we necessarily need to add a bat (Hanley, Pablo, Shaw, and Holt ought to be able to fill 3 positions between them, with Moncada and perhaps Travis on the horizon), but with Papi leaving, I expect we will nonetheless. I'd be loathe to give EE a fat 4-5 year deal at age 34 and give up a 1st round pick in the process, but it's hard to see Henry & Dombrowski losing Papi and not finding a way to bring in another masher in his place. I don't think we see any major changes to the rotation... Price/Porcello/Pomeranz/Rodriguez/Wright(/Buchholz?) is a pretty good group, though we could probably stand to add some depth beyond that. The bullpen will be in need of a makeover, as someone else mentioned. All in all, I expect a relatively quiet winter (which probably means it will be crazy).
  17. His 2.98 ERA in his last 8 starts is why he is starting. No, I don't trust him either, but when he's hot you might as well roll with it.
  18. I love the postseason generally, but not so much the part where we apply all kinds of mystical significance and storylines fraught with magical thinking to sample sizes of 2, 3, 5, etc. games.
  19. Darvish doing his best Porcello (of last night) impression.
  20. Ahh, got it. Seems as plausible a theory as any.
  21. Frustrating game to say the least, but I'll take solace in the fact that these looked like two very evenly-matched teams, and if even one thing breaks our way (like Porcello not crapping the bed in the 3rd, or even one of the B's having a decent game) we're probably up 1-0 right now. Miller is a f***ing animal (and not re-signing him after '14 looks like one of the great missed opportunities in very recent Sox history), but our pen mostly held its own after Porcello came out. Hoping for better things this afternoon. Price could really flip the narrative on his disappointing first year in Boston with a strong postseason.
