  1. Just trolling--- "HE WHO DOES NOT THINK THAT DEVERS IS NOT OUR 2018 THIRD BASEMAN HAS NOT LEARNED HISTORY OR IS PRONE TO FORGET IT/":
  2. Anyone who wpuld even suggest the possibility of platooning Devers, has a serious screw loose proble.
  3. All realistic viws are now passe! New lineups comiing fast and furious. Vazques 8th and Bradley 9th about the only "sure" things.
  4. And conversation.
  5. Well, the first black/american to graduate from West Point was a former slave. He graduated from the point in 1877! (not a typo). I arrived in Ledo, India in late 1944. The burma Road was just becoming passable. The buiders were mostly african/american and I believe their officers were also. They were an engineering brigade (or company)
  6. Good post although your "90" is out of whack. I was born in 1924, brought up in Somerville (1/2 Irish, 1/2 Italian) snd my guess is closer to 65% than 90%. On then other hand, the US Army was racist! Not integrated until Truman came along. Besiodes, more of Somerville's "racism" was toward the Jews, not the blacks.
  7. He'll retire before the end of this season. For Pete's Sake grab Nunez while we can.
  8. Thank you, Dewey! The last time I droe over there for a workout, I could hardly make it back to where I was parked. And I only visited one practice field, I stopped dring a couple of years ago, however, and can't make that mistake again! I I am totally fascinated by this Devers kid! I wish Papi was still around to give him a pat on the back now and then. I hope they get him signed long term. And he's just beginning!
  9. My athletic director at Barkley Place is interested in busing a few of us over to catch a spring training workout. Anyone of you know who she can call to get more specific information.?--thanks
  10. When I moved last July to a retiremnt home in Ft Myers, I downgraded, and watched the games on MLB.TV or basica channels. Istill use comcast for both. The MLB.TV feeds stunk. INs and outs pauses, shut-offs, whatever, I;d like to get ONLY XtraInnings this year. My TV is fine., but I no longer watch anything on ESPN, TNT, etc. and don't want to pay the full boaWill I be able to buy the XtraInnings by iteself next year?
  11. HOSMER (It;s not my money)
  12. Is therea hread for trade rumors! I thought that this was that thread. Why foes anyone give a s*** about who makes what. (Maybe they should do it like the Army does. Then give a pension after 22 years. Bottom line: Who will be out 2018 cleanup hitter. I can almost guaratee that by 2020 it will be Devers. But in the meantime????
  13. For baseball fans everywhere: The Ballad of Billy Werber It was somewhere between '34 and '36 and the scene was Fenway Park; The Red Sox were hosting the Yankees, The day Billy Werber made his mark. I don't recall who's pitching, but he's angry and over-wrought; He'd just walked this Werber kid And he did not do that a lot! Somewhere out there in Google-land, There may be an account of this feat; But, I was there in person, On a bench they called a seat. After drawing the walk, Werber heads for first, The catcher, Dickey holding the ball; Lazzeri, is no where near second Paying no attention to the “ball 4” call. Crosetti, the shortstop is checking his hair, hat off, fingers scratching away; Everybody seems half asleep on this balmy, mid-summer day. As Billy makes the turn at first, he's watching these all-stars freeze, So he puts his butt in second gear and slides into second with ease! Many years later I heard that Cobb had pulled the same thing once, And a few others had likewise tried, but not really a whole big bunch. In 1930, Billy was a Yankee, where Crosetti amd Lazzeri held sway; He rode the bench and played off and on; Until it came; a career changing great day. He was traded to the Red Sox, and became a very familiar face; Can you imagine the smile he beamed standing tall on second base? This came so early in a great career, that not much was written or said, Until the word came out of Charlotte, that the great Billy Werber was dead. Some times stats tell a story that are true but incomplete; and there are few of his equal in Cooperstown, not when you're talking “compete.” His numbers can be easily found, hitting, fielding, (man, how he could run---!) He fought to the day in two thousand eight, but couldn't quite make it to a hundred and one!
  14. The number 6 coms to mind. I thought they should offer him 6 for one year, expecting him to come back with "6/per for 2 years. I tink je might have taken the 5 for one year when he finally signed. I could be wrong on this but I'm not going to waste time researvhing something that's dead and done.
  15. Hill may get hammered tonight right off the bat. Or, he may go 6 or 7 strong innings. The point is, he's pitching in the biggest game of his life. But, he was not good enough to be No. 5 in the Red Sox rotation!
  16. Every time I think of Rich Hill I hink DD should get booted for an error in judgement this bad. 6 Mil!! What are some of these other guys getting? It was the biggest mistake I can think of that a Red Sox GM has made in many years,. On the other hand: How many of the experts on this board agreed with him? Almost all! So, while it was obvious to me (ahen) it wasn't obvious to others. So I guess it was not a fireable offense. Everyone has a right to ake stupid mistakes once in awhile.
  17. He's probably worn out! Same as their top reliver is (6 batters, about 10 runs!). Just as Sale was, same as Price was every year. When they stop twisting their f***ing arms out of their sockets with this damn sliders, maybe they'll las a full season. And stay in shape for 12 months, and fon't waste spring training trying to lose 1o lbs worth of flab.
  18. Big Papi is stealing the FOX pre-game show. We need a new coach. Hers are two in one body! (We did not need a new word, but I couldn't resist!) Benchitting coach would be oerfect for him
  19. I would no more count on Pedy for the future than I would Hanley.
  20. Daic Ortiz prior to WS game 2: _ I was mad when they (the Red Sox) let him (Rcih Hill) go!!!
  21. It just occurred to me. No wonder people were as interested in batting practice as they were the game. Foxx, Williams, Cronin, Doerr, Tabor etc Not to mention DiMaggio (although not as much!)
  22. So-o-o sorrry. Macro Degeneration (will turn 93 in December). Forgot to edit! Sometimes I write a comment out in Word ()larger print), then copy and paste. Didn't expect this to be this long!
  23. U wonder if any of you remmember Jim Tanor. He was ourthirds baseman back in the ;40's who ysed to put holes in the Wa;;/ He died at age 36, but was ahuge favorite of all fans. Hart attack was the diagnosis. Bur everyone knew it was booze. //at one time the Sox had private eyes trying to keep up with him. He wasn;t the first major leaguer to show up at the park galf in the bag, but hestill threw harder than anyone on the team. He was seen as a bad filder, Not true,=, percentage wise. Some of his throws to 1B, however, were eoic, Bullets gone astray,''I thought of him the first game Devers played here. Jim's fielding peercentages were not that bad actually. .920s etc. It;s a little latem but God Rest His Soul!!!
  24. I don't think Butterfield is going anywhere either. His value as an infield field coach is well known. I would hate to see Devers tossed around from one position to another. He'll be fine at 3B. LH 3rd basemen are VERY hard to find. He's 20 years old, and quite obviously. learns quickly. He.s going to be special+ that's for sure!
  25. Dizzy Dean had only 6 productive years. He was on the service for about 5 and had a cup of coffee in 1920. Hw had over 1800 strikeouts in the those 6 years. 200/year (more or less) Did Diz throw hard? As hard as anyone befpre or since!
