  1. Refsnyder is the 15th best hitter vs LHPs over the last 3 years. Three years is not a fluke. The Sox have sucked vs LHPs. Refsnyder needs to play every game when a LHP starts. Call that the "4th OF'er, if you wish. I call him our platoon OF'er, and since Abreu has sucked vs LHPs, so far, it seems obvious he should sit vs lefties. If you agree with that, I ask what is the best defensive alignment vs LHPs, when Ref is playing? Duran-Rafaela-Refsnyder (left to right) or Refsnyder-Duran-Rafaela (when in Fenway.) IMO, It's not really Ref vs Raf, it's Ref and Abreu platooning and Rafaela playing FT, either in CF or mostly CF, but RF vs lefties.
  2. I was saying "If they add him to the 40" as I thought they needed to add him to keep him in their system. I was wrong. They'd only add him to the 40, if they want him on the 26 for opening day, assuming Abreo cannot play. Sorry for sounding confusing.
  3. One would think, if we DFA Sabol, we'd add Zavala as the 3rd catcher.
  4. If he is not on a roster, can he just sign a minor league deal? How to you DFA someone not on the roster?
  5. Agreed, and our bottom 3 are not as bad as many teams. I'm not worried about our O.
  6. I gotta think Abreu has earned a role as a starting corner OF'er, and since Duran can't play RF, he's the guy in RF vs RHPs, if and until Anthony wrestles it away from him (or Rafaela.) If Anthony gets the call, it will be to play FT, so all I see is an Abreu-Rafaela platoon, unless we trade someone. All 4 are under team control for a couple more years or more.
  7. Being out of options means he'd have to agree to a AAA assignment, right, or does he have to pass through waivers, first?
  8. As bad as Casas is at 1B, it beckons, now. I do think devers should wait to play anywhere on the field, until the shoulder feels well enough.
  9. That makes it a little more interesting. I'm not sure they add him to the 40,as the 60 Day IL a pitcher, but it could happen. They may end up losing him later, but he could end up sucking, and make the choice easier. We have 2-3 pitchers we could 60 Day, sosome flexibility is there. Is this journeyman worth it, based on a few hot weeks in ST'ing? Is his batting adjustment something that can carry forward?
  10. MLB.com reports that the Sox are planning on a RF platoon with Abreu, when well, and Refsnyder. I'm not happy with Ref in Fenway's RF, but keeping Rafaela in CF has advantages, too. Personally, I'd prefer this in Fenway and other parks with larger RFs: LF: Refsnyder CF: Duran RF: Rafaela Abreu is saying he hopes to be ready by opening day, and if he is, we could see this as the line-up: 1. L Duran LF 2. L Devers DH 3. R Bregman 3B 4. L Casas 1B 5. R Story SS 6. L Abreu/ R Refsnyder RF 7. R Wong C 8. R Rafaela CF 9. L DHam/ R Romy 2B
  11. I agree. Moving Duran to CF is barely a drop off on D, and a big plus on O over Rafaela. In his case, the depth is better than the starter. Since have a few LF'ers, it's not a drop off to have Ref in LF vs LHPs and Duran in CF: it's actually better. Vs, RHPs, it gets more complex. Yoshida in LF and Duran in CF is scary to many of us. I see our OF as pretty interchangeable and flexible. I think there is depth everywhere, except RF, until Anthony is added, but if Cora chooses to play Rafaela in RF, maybe we're okay, there too. LF: Duran, Ref, Yoshida, Abreu (Anthony, Campbell) CF: Rafaela, Duran (Anthony, Campbell) RF: Abreu, Rafaela (Anthony) Looks safe, unless we have two injuries.
  12. I get that, and it looks like Abreu and Yoshi won't be out for long, so I agree, they won't be added as a patch. I do think Ref, Romy and Sogard can play LF, until Abreu is ready. If we add Thompso to the 40, we can send him down to AAA, so he may be the choice, as we 60 Day a pitcher.
  13. I get it. I just wasn't sure, if he was signed to a minor league deal, or not, or if he had some date to opt out. Apparently, he does not. He may end up on someone's 26, but maybe not on opening day, so if that is the case, couldn't he choose to stay with our AAA team?
  14. OK, so he has to be on the 40 or can choose to leave.
  15. But, can he stay in our system?
  16. The 267 PA sample size vs LHPs in 2024 is pretty significant, Dham hit: .256 with 7 HRs and 24 XBHs and 24 SBs. Over 650 PAs, that's about 15 HRs, 50 XBHs and SBs. That is a plus 2Bman in MLB. His defense at 2B was plus, too. I'm not going to say he "deserves" another long look, but I'm not sure why some seem to be so down on him, as a platoon 2Bman. Romy absolutely killed LHPs in 2024, and was second to Ref as our best batter vs lefties. We don't kno, if that is repeatable, and his defense at 2B was questionable, according to the numbers, but I feel the tow should be okay as a 2B platoon to open 2025. The ST'ing numbers point towards it working, at least for a while.
  17. I agree, and if continues to do well vs LHPs, to start 2025, it mbe hard to replace him with a FT Campbell. (I suppose Campbell could play FT by playing 2B v LHPs and OF vs RHPs, but our OF is already loaded with LHBs who do well vs RHPs.)
  18. If we can stay healthy, our pitchers should have one big advantage over 2024: much better defense behind them: C: The same? Narvaez may not be better than McGuire and jansen, but maybe as good on D. Wong needs to show improvement, but we can't count on it. 1B: Worse. Casas will play more, under my assumption of good health. 2B: Better. DHam is much better than EValdez, Grissom, Reyes and others. Romy is okay, I guess. SS: Much better. Story blows everybody we had in 202away. 3B: Much better. Bregman is on the opposite side of the spectrum from Devers on 3B defenders. LF: Depends how often Duran plays LF nd not Ref/Yoshi. CF: Better as Rafaela should play here more often and Duran, when he is not. RF: Same as Abreu returns and maybe Rafaelsa or Anthony play here. 2 much better 2-3 better 2-3 same 1 worse
  19. In a sense, his shoulder issues has made the problem (if it even is one) go away... for now.
  20. Good to know. I was wondering about this, as roster crunch time nears. If we lose Ottavino and Moore, I won't shed a tear. Adams & Zavala do seem like it might be worth trying to keep as options. Davis is in between, IMO. Having Thompson until July is nice. Anything on Eaton, Toro and Newcomb?
  21. Of course, there are players that show there is some randomness to the top 100, but I have to believe the top 33 did better than the middle 33, and the middle 33 better than the bottom 34.
  22. Although a seperate issue from the timing of calling up prospects, this has been a long-standing problem with the Sox system. In the past we just spent on pitching, and ho-hummed the farm's failure with finding and developing top pitchers. I will say, I think the pendulum started to swing several years ago, even if perhaps by blind luck. While Houck, Bello & Crawford may not be great, they do represent the three best farm-produced SP'ers in over a decade. The lack of any great SP'ers on the farm now, may support the case that little has changed, but I see a much more promising group of pitching prospects than we've had in over a decade, as well. Some started out in other systems, and were acquired by our GMs, but nonetheless, here is the list: Whitlock, Slaten, Fitts, Winckowski, Priester, Weissert, Sandlin, Kelly, Penrod, Fajardo, Gambrell, Jackson All homegrown: Guerrero, Perales, Dobbins, Early, Monegro, Mullins, Wehunt, Dean, Carlson, Ingrassia, Mata Tolle, Cason, Valera, Reyes, Delzine, Paez, Neely, Clarke, Tygart and more I think we have turned the corner, but still have a ways to go. I like Breslow's focus on adding more and more pitchers. He drafted more of them, higher in the draft, and gave out more bonus pool money to pitchers than we have done in a while.
  23. Look at the splits and defense at 2B. He's a decent 2Bman vs RHPs. He should not start vs LHPs. I guess you can call a platoon player a "role player," but he's the long side platoon and that is usually called the starter.
  24. Well, DHam has done pretty well in ST, while others struggled. Not only does he have an .837 OPS, he has 5 SBs in just 40 PAs. He's looked pretty good.
  25. While true, EValdez had more 2B PAs than anyone else in 2024 and by almost double the next guy- DHam. 202 EValdlez 118 DHam 109 Grissom 56 Romy, 42 Sogard, 39 Westbrook 17 Rafaela, 16 Reyes, 11 Gaspar, 8 Wong, 3 Short I am pretty sure DHam starts the season at 2B vs RHPs, only. I think Romy plays vs lefties. My gut tells me Campbell is better, but I'm fine with waiting on him.
